DHJFGFHJKDGS OK welcome to my word vomit of an essay about why I like Joshu;;; i AM SO SORRY IN ADVANCE FOR HOW LONG THIS GOT DJKFHADSFJ Apparently I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to gush about him since he’s on and off been my hyperfixation for a long while now;;;
Yes, I very much unironically and genuinely love Joshu. He is my absolute favorite character in the whole of JJBA, AND I KNOW THATS RIDICULOUS, but hear me out. He is and has been a gross pathetic asshole for most of the run, I accept that fact and I can very much say that with confidence but, most (if not all) of his actions throughout the series (like his hostility against Gappy and his weirdness around Yasuho) are understandable if you look at it from his perspective. Don’t see any of this as me excusing him, the reason why he reacts the way he does is understandable but the way he goes about his reactions is not really something I condone, its more amusing for me to watch than anything.
Joshu is not really;;; a stable person. Just from the first chapter you can see that with him immediately trying to assault and murder Josuke, proclaiming that he’ll kill him and then himself. That’s a batshit crazy thing to do but, when you see your crush/childhood friend laying on the ground with a completely naked guy, you’re obviously gonna freak out slightly because what the hell. But the problem with Joshu is, he is an inherently really emotional guy and he’s the type to make the worst kind of assumptions before he could even begin to process what’s happening in front of him (at least, with things concerning to Yasuho he is). And with those two traits combined, he becomes easily overwhelmed with any kind of stressful situation. Unfortunately though, he never takes a moment to collect himself and his feelings always get the best of him, so he does really drastic things that are really fricking outrageous and some of those things are really fricking unacceptable.
Just from his first appearance (both his physical and story wise), he’s kinda a pathetic thing to look at and witness but look at the potential. He is an asshole, even if he wasn’t introduced in that way or if he wasn’t against Gappy 24/7, he is an asshole because he’s a spoiled brat with no respect for others. But he has so much potential as a character. He’s just antagonistic to any perceived threats. He isn’t just a two-dimensional perverted incel, he cares about his family and genuinely does care about Yasuho. He’s so against Josuke because he’s a complete stranger that just yeeted himself into his house, his home (literally his room), his family, and into the arms of the one he loves. Josuke is a stranger, so Joshu has no reason to trust him at all and with the whole mess that is their first meeting, he has even less of a reason to want treat him nicely. He acts rude to anyone that tries to intrude their home, even kicking a chair at them, because that’s his way of protecting his family. Yes, Kato is his mother but he has never seen her before in his life and she can be seen as a threat to the family because she literally has been in jail for 15 years for murder.
Most of what we see of him is just him reacting to shit that’s happening, he rarely ever instigates things, just escalates them due to him being him. Because any sane person would freak the fuck out with most of the situations that he ends up in, he’s just ridiculous as fuck and needs to hold his tiddies for once. He is sympathetic despite how he’s portrayed, he has reasons for his nasty behavior (not just being an asshole for the sake of it), and I love that.
Other than that, there’s so many more things that I love about him. Believe it or not, Joshu’s more of a timid person than anything. In Shakedown Road, he cowers easily in the face of authority if he’s so much as pressured by more than two people. The moment everyone’s eyes are on him, he instantly apologizes and forks over the money. He doesn’t even go out of his way to insult anyone, he just tries his best to make sure people keep their distance and leave him the hell alone. He’s pathetic and a coward but, by the end of the arc, he discovers that he has a stand (or some sort of power) and, in the most roundabout of ways, he quite literally stands up for himself. And that is the beginning of TASTY CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT because in the next Joshu arc we can see him be more confident in a place that isn’t his home or do something that doesn’t pertain to his obsession with Yasuho and its wonderful. Because his stand is awesome and op af, and he’s slowly making his peepee size grow with every attempt he makes at just going forward and being himself.
I don’t think he’s a ‘good’ person, I don’t think he’s ever gonna be one really since he’s selfish and self-centered but watching him mature is a treat even if there’s barely any maturity going on in that tiny sewer brain of his. I know I didn’t even talk about Yasuho BUT this is already too long sdhfjsdf I’m so sorry and also thank you :”D I give you love ❤️❤️❤️
