always in our masks that we forget we're wearing forgetting we're real

isn’t it strange the things you remember …

like me asking Mum from a garden swing shedding teeth how long do butterflies live

her saying, ‘Not very long Love I think’

me, thinking forty years on every time I see a butterfly in the garden how wrong she was

up in the attic looking for winter blankets

I stumble upon summer skates last worn forty years before by feet I do not own anymore laces still loosely tied a missing wheel an ice-cream stain I find an old smile and unearth giggles raw, once roared

forgetting then remembering what I’m here for
