Mary’s gloves are barely keeping her warm in the shack, and her hands are shaking too hard, so she tugs them off, tucking them in her coat pocket. The Arctic wind is frigid on her bare skin, but she has to do this. She has to know.

“And—you saw them?” she asks the man in front of her.

She’s not even sure how Doug found him—his shack is so deep in the wilderness that Mary had nearly turned back a dozen times, but.

But she has to know.

It’s not like she and Stede were ever a love match—honestly, when his expedition hadn’t returned as expected, a part of her had been almost happy, relieved, knowing that the marriage was delayed for a while longer. But then time had stretched further and further and further, until it was six months, a year, more, and.

And yes, she and Stede hadn’t chosen each other—never would have, given their own freedom—but that didn’t mean she wanted him lost in the Arctic!

So she’d appealed to every wealthy man and widow she could think of, tried to raise funds for a mission to find them, or at least to find out what happened to them, and that’s how she’d met Doug, the personal portrait painter of Lord Franklin.

And then she’d ended up here, in Canada, in the hut of an ageless Scot who hasn’t blinked in the entire twenty minutes she’s been inside his strange, empty home.

“Aye,” he says after a long moment. “I saw them, indeed.”

She opens her satchel, finds the portrait of Stede, pulls it out and points. “You saw him? Stede Bonnet, you saw him?”

The man gives the portrait a long look. It’s not the most flattering likeness of Stede ever taken—he’s always been a man who doesn’t quite fit in his skin, who shows it in daguerreotypes in a way he can almost mask in person—but it’s definitely him.
