Stereotypes in Korean Dramas
Back to the topic relates to âKorean Dramasâ again! Even Iâve created a new blog trying to write something new and not related to K-Dramas. However, Iâm just too obsessed with it and when seeing this stereotype topic, I just canât ignore to write about it relates to K-Dramas. Iâm already a fan of K-Dramas, a social group!
Since technology is developed and media is introduced to the society, people receive more information and is opened to the bigger world. People now can interact, communicate, create and share the information with each other. With a step in of media, it somehow influences peopleâs minds and perception. Stereotypes have been created all over the place due to the introduction of mass media. No matter what we see, there is an implication in it. We consume and perceive those stereotypes via TV, Internet and etc. We can see stereotypes everywhere such as in movies, music videos, or even in TV show we watch!
With the accessibility of the internet nowadays, people can now more interact and engage to new things or new information. Korean drama is also the one that creates stereotypes among society. We can see how Korean society, culture or people is like while watching or consuming these dramas. These dramas are translated into many different languages. So, people can consume and share via their own websites so it makes Korean drama gain reputation and become popular.
Korean dramas contain lots of stereotypes. If we consume it consciously, weâll notice a number of them.A stereotype in Korean dramas is observed by watching different dramas and then notices the similar or the frequency of characteristics weâve seen.
Here come stereotypes that we often see when we watching Korean dramas.
#1 â The male lead is always good-looking.
In every Korean drama, the male lead always looks handsome and attractive. I have never seen any K-Dramas that doesnât have the male lead full of perfection. Iâve heard the way that Korean dramas portray the male lead as a good looking and nice guy is because they want to compensate for the fact that Korean guys are selfish and flattering themselves. They want to create social value by spreading through Korean dramas.
#2 â Female leads are often poor while male leads are often rich
Surprisingly, female leads in most of the Korean drama are poor. They somehow struggle for their lives. They need to work extra as to find money paying for tuition fees or their livesâ costs. In contrast, male leads are often rich. They appear to be the heir of some big company as they were born to be billionaires. I told you, they are too perfect!
#3 â The second male lead is also handsome and caring.
I donât understand why the second male leads are always good-looking in most of the Korean dramas. It is too hard to decide who I should team up to support to be with a female lead. The second male leads are so gentle and take a good care of a female lead, sometimes even more handsome and nicer than the first male lead, they still end up losing somehow. Aww, such a pity L I canât handle this. I always ended up being a second male lead syndrome â canât help!
#4 â The lead actor doesnât like the female lead at first but, later on, loves the girl.
There are so many dramas that the two leads donât like each other at first, but later on, they fall in love with each other. Itâs kind of clichĂŠ here donât you think? We have seen lots of this scene in lots of dramas, but we still love watching it anyway.
#5 â Love triangles (Always!)
If there is no love triangle in K-Dramas, it wouldnât be a complete K-Drama one! Most of the Korean dramas that Iâve watched so far have a love triangle or maybe square. Well, except for some genre that focuses more on action content rather than a love story. The female lead is always loved by two handsome guys and then they fight over her. However, the first male lead always ends up winning, leaving the second male lead to be a heartbroken man.
Even we all know these stereotypes, we still watch it somehow.
Well, Korean dramas are just too entertaining!
