I despise when men try the "perfect world" argument with me.
"What if we were in a perfect world, would prostitution be okay then? What if we were in a perfect world, would you be okay with surrogacy? If there's no financial gain, then it should be okay, right?" 😏
No, I'm not playing your games. I'm never going to say that female exploitation is okay in a "perfect" world, and you can't make me. Obviously it's not a perfect world if people are still using women for parts, not that that ever occurs to them. It's just them trying to wheedle you into loosening your grip on your morals. If they can get you to agree that there's nothing "inherently" wrong with these things, then you can bet their next step is going to be normalizing it in other scenarios.
A world with prostitution and seragacy is not a perfect world. In a perfect world men would hate the idea of having sex with someone who wasn't willing in a perfect world everyone who wanted to have children could and there would be no seragacy nessicary.
And if being in a perfect world means there’s no financial gain for prostitution then that makes it just having sex… unless you’re imagining that some women would still have the job of sex-provider-on-demand in your commune and if that’s the case it very much sounds like she’s still trading sex for food and shelter. Removing money doesn’t make it not exploitation.
some people have boundaries that are rooted in confusing, offensive, or disagreeable beliefs. and the thing is, no matter how much you disagree with those core beliefs, as long as the boundary is a *personal* one, it still needs to be respected.
for example: i'm bi. when i was dating, i knew many gay and straight people who did not want to date bi people. that boundary is fine and i respect it. it has happened before they told me they don't want to date bisexuals because we're promiscuous and unfaithful. is that gross and offensive? sure. i don't respect that belief one bit. but i respect the boundary and never tried to force anything.
you can challenge those beliefs, but you cannot challenge personal boundaries. and if it's clear that you're only challenging someone's beliefs to push their boundaries, don't be surprised when they lash out at you.
on a related note, i've seen an uptick in people debating this about some topics relating to women's bodily autonomy (when do they ever stop, really). so i'm tapping this post as reminder of my stance on the matter.
whether a woman aborts a disabled fetus because she personally can't care for a disabled child, or if she disgustingly sees disabled people as inferior, that has no bearing on the morality of the abortion itself.
whether a woman chooses not to date/sleep with people from any marginalized race, belief system, gender, class, physical or mental ability, etc., it can be due to "acceptable" reasons of past experiences or incompatibility, or due to "unacceptable" bigotry (extremely loaded arguments of acceptibility btw), again, it doesn't matter for that choice itself.
the answer "women need to use their genitals to make X choice for X reason" isn't to say "women need to use their genitals to make Y choice for Y reason". the obsession with women's reproductive systems and romantic/sexual relationships as progressive praxis is disgusting.

I would actually go as far as to say that MOST abuse is unintentional. I think most people will go through their lives without ever experiencing intentional abuse. People are abusive because they're selfish, because they're stressed, because they care more about what society thinks they should do than the impacts of their actions on their children and partners, because they think what they're doing is correct, because they've made it make sense in their own heads, because they think they can fix their victims, they think they can fix their relationships, they think they can stop you from leaving, they think they can make you a better partner to them, they think that means you need to do what they want. We've sort of constructed mental illness in a way that doing this shit to other people counts as a form of mental illness because it is anti social behavior in the literal sense— it is behavior that causes social harm.
I don't say any of this to excuse it. I think everyone needs to be more aware of this because if you think abuse has to be intentional you will never realize you are capable of abusive behavior. You will never realize you are being shitty to the people you love, because YOU know what you mean, YOU know you don't mean any harm. But you're doing harm. You need to pay attention to the impact you have on other people, and you need to do it all the time, Especially when you feel least capable of doing so. Sorry! You live in a society. Get your head out of your ass.
