Is making monster versions of darkner backstories difficult? Because it's really interesting, honestly. I have an idea of what Flowerys would be but I'm kind of confused about King seeing as he is definitely here in AFAC. What is he king of then? Because there's already a king of monsters. Unless he's like king of a casino which would fit the playing card aesthetic
It can be difficult, yes. There's a balance to strike. I'm aiming to keep everything that makes that character interesting and unique, while also adapting in such a way that it makes sense for that world.
The trick is to identify things you absolutely do not want to change about a character, and write around that. ...So for example, Spamton's must-keeps were 1) He and Tenna were partners but had a falling out that left both feeling bitter about the whole situation 2) He wants Freedom 3) Some sort of otherworldly entity has been messing with him and maybe a phone was involved. The rest became easy once I knew what was important to keep.
In the case of King (as in Lancer's Dad), the important things are 1) He is a King of something, 2) He has a bitter vendetta against a group of people he feels wronged by, 3) He would like if his son had that same vendetta but this does not happen because Lancer made friends with them instead, 4) Queen is his ex who he has an antagonistic yet oddly amicable relationship with, 5) He might end up in jail if he isn't already in jail.
Thus my King backstory is like so...
He is a Boss Monster, and the descendant of the royalty of the long-ago destroyed Card Kingdom, which was a monster monarchy that existed before the war. When the human-monster war swept across the land, the Card Kingdom was destroyed. Most of King's family was killed during the conflict, but King (who was the youngest Prince at the time) was sent away to be somewhere safe. His retainers who brought him to safety were also killed, and he was scarred by the blade of one of the earliest members of the Silver Brigade. Eventually, he was sealed under Ebott with the rest of monsterkind. There he grew up, bitter, resentful towards humans for destroying his home and leaving him to rot in the dark. He held fast to his title as King, even if in practice it means close to nothing. In his opinion, the Card Kingdom is not a location but an idea, and so long as he says it's alive then it continues to be alive. ...Then, somewhat recently, he had a sudden yet short-lived romance with a sexy computer woman, which resulted in his beloved son Lancer, whom they are co-parenting. He's ever so slightly annoyed that this means he will start aging (because that's how it works for Boss Monsters), but any annoyance he feels at the looming specter of death is outweighed by the pride he feels in his son. Lancer too is a boss monster, but even if he had not been one, this would not have changed how his father treats him. ...Understandably, he hates humans. In fact, his hatred for humans was a major factor in why his and Queen's relationship soured (she thinks King needs to learn how to have a nuanced opinion). Lancer is now three years old, and has already made friends with Kris, Susie, and Ralsei. King doesn't like this, and forbids them from visiting when Lancer is at his house, but Lancer also stays with Queen half the time, so yeah.
