ELIA MARTELL : nymxros
“I don’t think men are all that different from beasts,” Elia remarks. “At least, they have the capability for reckless violence.” And in some ways, it was worse. It was nature for beasts, instinctual and without capacity to understand the suffering they wrought. The same could not be said for men.
well, helaena certainly couldn’t argue with that. the dornish princess’ words rang with truth; if she was more bold in nature, she would have added that she thought men were beasts. beasts of the most terrifying kind, since they could choose not to be. “would you say the men in dorne are as beastly as the ones in king’s landing, princess?”

AEMOND TARGARYEN : claimedvhagar
Aemond watched his twin nephews play on the carpet of his sister’s chambers. Perhaps if they were his children he’d be more interested. They were toddlers with short term memory. They probably didn’t even know who he was. “Just like all children.” Aemond said, turning towards his sister. “What about you? When they’re occupied with the maids what do you do?” Aemond was busy training, reading, and preparing for his future duties as the next in line after Aegon. He imagined Helaena felt alone with their brother off running from his birth right.
a fairly ordinary question, but not one that’s been directed to her in a while. the last time anyone has truly inquired after her was in the days following the twins’ birth, and it’s certainly been some time since then. she lets out another thoughtful hum before saying, “i watch them. or i embroider something.” her eyes fall on the tambour frame readied with new cloth for the day. “i am not as free to do as i please like you or aegon, but you know that.”
the way her hands nervously clasp over her navel gives her away, although helaena doubts her mother didn’t already know. that was likely the purpose of her visit, undoubtedly after multiple inquiries to her chambermaids if they’d noticed a change in her in the weeks since her wedding. it’s not as if helaena would be able to hide it if she wanted to do so, anyway. at least not for long. “i have not bled this month,” she says quietly, looking up at her mother for a moment before looking away. “i don’t feel any different, but i’ve heard the maids whisper.”

AEGON TARGARYEN : fallesto
He wanted for very little to be honest. He had no interested in getting married, to her or to anyone at all as well. It never really caught his attention at all, but he was the eldest of them all and his fathers true born son and heir to the throne. There were some … expectations of him. “It is odd, I never looked at you like that.” As his sister, not as his partner by any means. He enjoyed, nothing other than wine and wondering the streets at night, brothel to brothel and then crawling back to his chambers and now that, everything he actually liked was about to come crashing to an end, were was his say in all of this.
He didn’t know whose wise idea this was, they had nothing in common. Nothing at all. Why not hand her down to his younger brother, two oddities together would do them both well, leave him out of it so he can continue on and do as he wished. “I don’t need to be scared, I know what I am doing.” He knew his way … around the fairer sex. If she held concerns, she didn’t need to, he was not going to hurt her, but he was not going to be the husband of lore and stories. He had no interest in her wants and needs, only in his own.
“You speak as if this was an awful thing, it is a little bit, but better to remain here than to be shipped of somewhere else like our older sister and make a fool of yourself.”
that, at least, was something they both agreed on. their father said it might take time for the way they viewed one another to change, but helaena thought otherwise. “i suppose it does not matter.” there were plenty of marriages born out of duty and arrangements, political or otherwise, outside of their own traditions. for a moment, she wonders if she might have felt differently about transitioning into a wife if she’d been betrothed to another. but helaena supposed pondering over alternative scenarios didn’t matter much either.
“you don’t know as much as you believe you do, aegon.” and she isn’t just speaking of activities on the marital bed, but she decided she’d leave him to his thoughts over what other things she was pertaining to. it’s said with no sharpness, no condescension or bite in her tone, though she was certain he would take offense. in an effort to avoid an outburst ( a probably futile one ), she swiftly says, “our older sister is elsewhere, yes, but she seems to be quite happy in her life. happier than you and i.”

I don't know why solitude would be a balm for loneliness, but that is how it always was for me in those days,
Marilynne Robinson, from Gilead
part of her wants to smile at that, but she doesn’t. only inching further away on the seat like she always does, eyes still on her embroidery pattern for the day ( a trail of ladybugs, in loving memory of the ones she kept in a jar that had to be removed once she was married ). her mother’s words are nice and are meant to be comforting, but they aren’t true — if she believed it was, that didn’t necessarily make it true. “there is no heart in this castle. there won’t be for some time,” helaena tells her after a moment. “none of our individual pieces will ever fit together to fit that mold, mother.”
