Reunion
Pulling her cell phone out of her pocket she stared at the screen as the unknown number kept calling her repeatedly.  It had been the same number for 3 days that had been calling her. Who the hell wanted to talk to her that badly? Finally deciding to answer the phone she figured it couldn’t hurt to find out. “Hello?” The female voice on the other end of the phone seemed annoyed that it had taken so long for her to answer the call. “Well it’s about time! You know keeping someone waiting who has a lot to offer is not the way to get your break, kid!” What a way to start a conversation when they didn’t even know who she was. “And yelling at someone you don’t even know is not the way to start a conversation about anything. What offer and break into what?” She had a million questions running through her head but those were the most obvious questions that she needed answered along with one more. “And who the fuck are you anyway? You’ve been calling my phone for 3 days and this is how you open up the conversation when I finally answer?” The voice on the other end had gone silent and she almost thought that they had hung up. “He was right about you… hard as nails and you don’t dance around getting your point across. This is exactly what you need to be to make it in this business.” Fully getting annoyed that she still was not getting any answers Hydra yelled into the phone this time to. “WHO are you! You seem to know me it’d be nice to know who the fuck I’m talking to about business!” The mild laughter on the other side of the phone was beginning to piss Hydra off more than she could even put into words. “You want to wrestle in the big leagues don’t you, kid?” At that question Hydra put it together and her heart about dropped as she realized she had just yelled at her future boss. But hell they still hadn’t told her who THEY were so she really couldn’t be blamed. “More than anything, these damn indie companies are boring with their lackluster promotions and lack of actual talent. I’m never going to get anywhere if I stay with them much longer. I needed a challenge so bad I even entered some MMA fights just to keep my skills sharp.” Hydra couldn’t hide her irritation with the lack of true competition in the ring that she had been facing going from one indie promotion to another. They sucked, but wrestling on a regular basis was the only way to get noticed. “Well then you’re in luck. Our scouts reported back to us and told us you were deserving of a shot and had the potential to grow if you ever faced off with some hard core challengers.” Hearing that Hydra couldn’t help bragging a little about her own abilities. “Put someone in front of me that’s an actual challenge and I’ll make every penny you spend on me worth it.” The mild laughter on the other end took on a more serious tone. “Now that’s what I like to hear. Pack your bags and be on the next flight here and we’ll see what you’ve got. I’ll text you the information of where you need to go and who to talk to. See you soon.” With that the call ended and Hydra stared at her phone barely able to believe what just happened. As the text popped up on her phone her heart stopped. She was being pulled up to the main roster and on her way to getting her debut in the big leagues. She shook her head slightly to make sure it was real and she wasn’t dreaming.
Deciding to waste no time she called the airport to book a flight and then set to packing her suitcase so that she could head out immediately. As she was packing another thought hit her and she wondered why she hadn’t thought about it sooner. She was going to run into him sooner or later she knew that. There were only just so many primary wrestling companies and odds are that he would be there. She looked at her phone laying on her bed next to her suitcase… Should she attempt to reach out to him and let him know she was coming? That she had finally made it? That she had done it on her own exactly as she had wanted to without his help? That was the whole reason she had left home after all. She was tired of the fights day in and day out ever since her mother had left. When she turned 16 it had just been one fight too many and after a particularly violent fight where she had vented a lot of her anger at him she left too. She had made the decision to leave all that behind to make her own path and forge her own legacy without his help because she didn’t want everyone thinking she was just another name in the family who stepped into the ring. She was tired of living in his shadow of expectations. She wanted it to mean something when she stepped out there and she wanted people to know HER for who she was and that she had busted her ass to get where she was on her own merit. That she had achieved it not because of her name and not because people felt it was handed to her, but because she had shown them her true abilities. Deciding not to reach out to him Hydra continued packing. She was probably going to see him soon enough anyway. Suddenly the 6 years since she left home didn’t seem so long at all. What would he do when they came face to face again?
With her bags finally packed Hydra headed out the door to catch her flight that she had booked and was leaving in a couple of hours. She didn’t know what was going to happen going forward, but whatever happened it was bound to be better than where she was and that was enough to keep her excited for the entire trip. It was only about a 2 hour flight so the fact that her adrenaline was pumping helped keep her focused on what was coming.
Reunion
Walking through the hallways Randy made his way to the arena gym. He was there early in the day again to meet up with Chyna for one of their sparring sessions. He had thought about it for awhile and had eventually agreed to work with her and help her out with how she wanted to try and improve. They had agreed to meet earlier in the day than anyone else would be there so they could work without harassment. There had certainly been a lot of that ever since the after party at the bar. They needed to be able to focus on their work so they worked out when no one else was around.
In the locker room still waiting for Chyna as he sat down on the bench he pulled his phone out. How many times had he tried making this phone call? He couldn’t remember. He knew he tried at least a few times a year and it had become routine that one was always around her birthday. Without realizing it until just now thinking about it one had always been just before big events. There was nothing he wanted more than to talk to her again just so they could try and resolve the issues between them so they could move forward. Sometimes it still shocked him that it had been 6 years since they had seen or heard from each other. Would she even want to hear from him? If she kept pursuing her path of wanting to make it in this business then he was bound to run into her eventually when she got pulled up to the main roster. Then they wouldn’t have a choice but to work things out as they would be face to face and unable to get away from each other. She was the one person that it actually tortured him a little that he couldn’t talk to. It wasn’t just because he wanted to help guide her on her rise through the roster, it was more than wanting to be able to share their accomplishments with each other. He missed her more than anyone would ever realize. Randy sat in the locker room staring at his phone with her number dialed but he had not hit the call button yet. He was still having the internal debate when someone came into the periphery of his view. “You look extremely disturbed about something.” Randy looked up to see Chyna standing next to him leaning on the lockers with her hands in her pockets. He smiled briefly at her. “Just contemplating a phone call I’ve been trying to make for 6 years.” He said as he looked back at his phone still hesitating. “A phone call 6 years overdue and you’re hesitating like this, unable to hit the dial button? Who would have you of all people that shaken up?” Chyna said as she sat down next to him. Who indeed. Randy let a short laugh and smirked at the irony of what she said. She wasn’t wrong and couldn’t blame her for being curious at just who could possibly make him hesitate so much. He knew now sitting here and actually talking to Chyna about how much he actually missed her. He’d never felt much regret about anything in his life. But this one… he regretted much that happened between them and he constantly cursed himself for that day that he hadn’t done more to keep her from leaving. But maybe she would have left even more so then. Who knew. “You ever have kids, Jo?” He said, still staring at his phone. He cleared the number off the phone and shoved his phone back in his pocket. Chyna looked at him not knowing what was going on in his mind, he looked like he was being tortured by an old pain that was close to his heart. That same heart that so many said he didn’t have.
Arriving at the arena was a surreal moment for Hydra. She had met up with one of the owners of Genesis Pro Wrestling company and signed her contract. That had taken place a few days ago and she had been in and out of the arena working out in the gym and watching the matches of the other talents. One match in particular that she had not expected to see was the title match. But then if she was going to run into him she should have known he would have done anything to crawl his way up to the title and knowing he would do anything once there to win it. Admittedly Chyna had seriously gave him a challenge, which is something few men could do, let alone a woman. It was strange though as she though back on the match. Towards the end even though you could still tell they were both doing their best to push each other even further the energy between the two of them had approached a level that the match was so fluid as if they had truly connected on some level in the ring. Most people probably would have missed it but Hydra knew him better than anyone ever could but himself. She knew what it was like to be on the receiving end of his anger and she knew what it looked like when he came after you.
She decided to do her work out early today so that she could work in peace but as she got closer to the gym she heard voices coming from inside and realized that she wouldn’t be alone. That was unfortunate but in the end she would just have to deal with it. As she turned into the gym though she froze at what she saw. On the practice mats there was Chyna having a sparring session with the one person she had hoped to avoid as long as possible… Randy Orton. She stood there watching them as they were working through different counters and blocks for various headlocks and choke holds. She probably had wondered how he pulled off the reversal that he had done during the title match to get out of the choke hold she had put on him. They were both facing away from the door so neither of them had seen her yet. Watching them Hydra couldn’t help but take notice of his tone with her. He was firm in his instructions but there was a soft undertone to his voice that she had never heard before. As she leaned on the door frame she thought about it for a moment, they really had found a connection during the match. Something based in mutual respect apparently because the Randy Orton that Hydra had always known would never have helped an opponent for one, but would never be this calm nor caring in his guidance. As they continued to work through one maneuver when he put his arms around Chyna’s head for a headlock his one hand was placed a lot lower than it should have been for the hold practically on her breast. They had turned towards the doorway as Chyna seemed to almost be playfully trying to get away and then Hydra noticed her smile and instead of the cold steeled expression on his face Randy was definitely in a pleasant mood as he was laughing along with her. This was something Hydra had rarely ever seen, could he really have changed that much?
Their morning routine was more about spending their time together and working without having to deal with the harassment from their colleagues. They both had been picked apart by many so it helped for them to be able to focus without distractions. This morning though Randy had a different distraction still thinking about the phone call he had not been able to make, again. Chyna had been consistently trying to get Randy to focus on what they were working on every time she could see his train of thought was wandering. “You know I’m going to kick your ass again if you keep getting distracted.” She smiled at him as they set up again for the choke hold that they had been working on so that he could teach her the different ways of getting out of it. “What makes you think I’m that distracted that I can’t still take you down.” Randy retorted as they got ready again and he put her in the headlock again. “You have to time it just right or it offsets everything and you’ll end up getting hurt instead of your opponent. Again.” As Randy put his arms around her he placed his hand a little low than it should have been. Part of the reason they tried to avoid the harassment from their colleagues was because they harassed each other enough. Chyna smirked at the placement of his hand and slapped his hand playfully. “Behave yourself we’re supposed to be training, not playing.” Randy couldn’t help but laugh along with her as they both knew damn well they had more fun playing around. Trying to focus again Randy corrected his hold and they tried again. Just before they continued though a voice distracted them both. “You’re ducking too soon.” Chyna and Randy looked up at the same time in the direction the voice was coming from. Chyna greeted the woman as she walked towards them. “Thank you. How did you know how to pick apart what I was doing wrong?” The woman smiled pleasantly but didn’t answer right away as her gaze was locked on Randy who had all but frozen like a statue. Chyna looked at Randy trying to find out what was wrong with him. “Randy…?”
Realizing they were too focused on each other to notice her standing in the doorway she pushed off the door frame and walked slowly towards the mats where Randy was showing Chyna exactly how to counter a standing naked choke hold. Chyna was missing the timing of when to duck under his arm and complete the counter move by throwing him over her shoulder to the mat. She failed another time as Hydra watched them set up again for it. Just as she was getting set Hydra decided to fix her problem. “You’re ducking too soon.” They both looked in her direction and the look on Randy’s face was absolutely priceless. Was it shock? Relief? She couldn’t tell in the moment. “You duck too soon and you offset your balance and it ruins the momentum of your opponent. They’ll never carry over your shoulder if you don’t have their momentum to add to yours.” Chyna looked at her and smiled, they had actually met the day after Hydra had arrived at Genesis. “Thanks, how did you know how to pick apart what I was doing wrong?” Hydra smiled back at her but kept her gaze locked on Randy who had frozen like a statue, was he even breathing? With a bit of a smirk she set her bag down with her gear in it and pulled out the tape she used for bracing her wrists. “Because knowing I would never be satisfied staying within my own weight class or gender roster if I ever made it into the business, my father used to drill me on how to escape every headlock and choke and submission hold that existed, including a few he made famous himself.” Hydra looked back at Chyna and Randy, the latter still had not moved nor taken his eyes off Hydra but he had not said anything either. Though she had noticed a brief moment when she mentioned her father that the expression on his face seemed to twinge a bit. Had it really been that painful for him? Chyna tried continuing the conversation trying to rouse Randy out of his trance-like moment. “Smart man that would have taught his daughter all of that before even getting into the business. You should be thanking him.” Hydra couldn’t help but laugh to herself. “Haven’t been able to say much to him at all really, haven’t seen or heard from him in 6 years.” Chyna, still looking at Randy. “That’s unfortunate that you haven’t seen him in that long. Randy are you ok?”
Randy couldn’t help his reaction to seeing her again. It was like his mind was on rewind to the last time he had seen her. When he had tipped off Scarlett about calling her he wasn’t even sure she would take the offer. His extra insurance was when he had told Scarlett to not mention his name at all to her. Now here she was. She had taken the offer and as much as he was trying to just say hello and ask her to forgive him he just couldn’t get the words out. It was like everything was standing still and all he could hear was the echo of his own breathing. He could see and hear that they were talking in front of him but his mind was too numb to acknowledge what they were saying. Â
He wanted to tell her how sorry he was for everything that had happened between them. He wanted her to know how much had happened since then. Most of all he just wanted to know that there was some way that they could repair what occurred between him that had caused her to leave all those years ago. Would she even want to fix the break between them? He had to know. He had been struggling to make the phone call himself to get her here face to face with him when he had thought of having Scarlett offer Hydra a job. Now that she was here, he was still struggling trying to figure out what to say to her. Matches were so much easier. No words needed, you just found a way to communicate with each other through each movement in the ring. That was part of the problem, words were never his strong point, it was easier for him to convey his thoughts through action. Maybe if he had spent as much time working on saying the words he needed to instead of just drilling her like a next generation for the ring she would have never left. He had so many regrets with things that he had said and done that caused her to leave. Would she accept a simple apology? He wouldn’t know unless he found a way to start talking to her now… why was it so damn difficult even though he’s the one that caused this reunion to happen like this?
Hydra was still laughing to herself inside at Randy’s reaction. Chyna tried giving him a light shake to try and wake him up. Having finished wrapping her wrists Hydra stepped onto the mat. “He’s a little too far gone for that, Chyna. I got this.” With that Hydra took a running start directly at Randy as she got close to him she pushed off the mat launching herself at him reaching up she grabbed him behind the head as she brought her legs up to his shoulders locked her ankles around his head and then letting go with her hands she flipped her upper body backwards and back down to the mat in a hurricanrana maneuver throwing him across the mat  Hydra knew it would snap him out of whatever daze he was in and to be honest it was just kinda fun. Getting back to her feet she watched as Randy got back to his nearly in a mirror move of each other. She knew it had snapped him out of the daze he was in by the expression on his face, what happened now was going to be just for fun. She took a running start at him again and he caught her by her arm lifting her and twisted away from her dragging her down to the mat with an arm drag.
The impact was not hard as if it was during a match. That wasn’t the point of this. This was a repetitious exercise to create familiarity so that action and reaction became instinct. Hydra knew the fact wasn’t lost on him when she hit the mat softer than she would have during a match. It was so easy, 2 moves in and they had snapped back into the same old routine, why was it they could work so well together but any time they actually tried talking they had always ended up screaming at each other? It left her wondering what the hell had really happened between them so long ago.
As she landed on the mat she braced her feet against his midsection, bending her knees slightly and then pushing back against him she would push him to flip over top of her so that he landed on his back. At this point it was becoming apparent to Chyna that they had faced off before as their actions and reactions became more fluid, almost like a planned routine. As she watched Randy flip over top of Hydra she watched as Hydra lifted her own body into a handstand from where she had landed on the mat and then bent her legs down in front of her with her feet landing on either side of Randy and she ended up standing over him. “Riley…” He stared at her still in disbelief that he was finally face to face with her. “There, all better.” Hydra said with a smirk as she offered a hand to Randy to get him back to his feet.
Chyna looked at them both confused and then looked to Hydra. “I thought your name was Kwyn? That’s how you introduced yourself the other day.” Hydra smiled at her. “Oh it is. Kwyn just happens to be my middle name.” Chyna was still confused. “So why did he call you Riley?” Looking at Randy to see how he would react Hydra explained it for Chyna. “Because Riley Kwyn is the name I was given at birth by my father.” Hydra never took her eyes off Randy who looked like he was trying to say something but couldn’t get the words out until finally he found his voice again. “You dropped your name? It was bad enough when you left but to drop your name as well?” The look on Randy’s face was hard to read but if Hydra had to put a finger on it she would have said a mix of confusion and pain.
Chyna suddenly seemed to put things together and she looked at Randy a little shocked. “She’s your overdue phone call?” Hydra smirked a bit at his reaction as he tilted his head looking at her with a look of longing like he had been feeling nothing but pain since she had left. Would she believe him when he told her how much he regretted the way things had happened. Not turning her head Randy watached Hydra’s gaze shift to Chyna as if she knew that Chyna had been part of the change in himself. “Riley… I… “ Dammit! How hard could it possibly be to talk to your own kid!? Hydra seemed to sense he was still struggling with what to say. “Look we both know that names are a big thing in this business and I told you then and I’ll say it again now… I wanted to make it on my own merit and hard work and not have to always wonder if things were handed to me because of my name.” Hydra turned to Chyna. “So to answer your question Chyna, yes I’m that overdue phone call he was talking about.” Looking back at Randy. “But to be fair I had the same overdue phone call that I was never able to make. Then it got to the point I figured we’d run into each other eventually so it seemed pointless. Guess I was right.” Hydra explained it all as if she had rehearsed it so many times trying to make sense of it all to herself as well as to anyone who asked. Still unable to put his thoughts into words Randy let Chyna continue the conversation.  “So your real name then?” Hydra laughed. “First name; Riley, middle name; Kwyn, because Mr. R.K.O. here has no originality when it comes to naming things.” Randy noticed the playful smirk as her last comment registered and he couldn’t help but let out a short laugh, always the instigator. Chyna stared at Hydra for a moment and then looked back to Randy. He knew Hydra couldn’t help the look of sarcasm on her face as he was still trying to find the ability to say what he wanted to. “You and I both know that had I walked into the ring bearing the name of Orton that things would have been laid at my feet with welcoming arms and I’d never know if it was because I deserved it, or because of who my father is. I didn’t want that. I wanted to know that I had earned everything that I achieved.“
Knowing She had spent a great deal of time hiding any connection to him hearing her say it roused him out of his internal musings. Trying to get himself out of his own head he finally knew what to say to her, but why did it always have to start with something wrestling related. “And you’ve done exactly what you set out to do.” Truthfully he was actually quite proud of her for everything she had achieved. She had done well in the indie companies proving herself in the ring. What he needed to say next he knew was going to surprise her compared to the last conversation they had ever had. He couldn’t look her in the eyes because it was nerve wracking enough. “There are a lot of things that I… regret… that happened between us. I don’t know how to fix it, Riley.” When she didn’t say anything he looked at her finally wondering how she would react. “All I’ve wanted to do for 6 years is tell you how sorry I am, hoping you would come home. The worst regret I have is not stopping you the day you left.” Randy was fighting the urge to just reach out to her and wrap her in a hug. He sucked at putting his feelings into words and he knew it.
Hydra looked at him like she almost didn’t recognize him. Deep down she was trying to figure out if he was truly sincere considering all the arguments they had before she had finally left home. She could tell by the look in his eyes though that he was, she hadn’t seen him this awkward since she was quite young. That was always the dead give away about sincerity with him. The closer to his heart it was the worse he was about trying to talk about it, he’d always been that way, that much she remembered from a time years ago before they had started arguing so much. “There’s nothing to fix.” She said it so calmly that she even surprised herself with how calm she was about it. “It’s in the past and I’d rather not dwell on it. What happened, happened. I’d rather spend time making things better going forward.” It was the honest truth that she had been holding onto all these years. No matter what had happened in the past she wanted to leave it there and work on moving forward. She knew it would never be like it was with both of them sheltering their own regrets about past events. That’s what gave her some hope that it would work out in the future. But now that they had figured that out, where did they go exactly from here? "I think this is the most awkward conversation we've ever had…" Hydra was trying to lighten the mood as she went to turn away from him so that he and Chyna could finish their sparring session. As she turned away from Randy she heard an all too familiar sound when he let out a sarcastic laugh. "Fine, we can discuss it like we used to before both our tempers ruined it." Before she knew it she felt Randy wrap his arm around her under her arms and picked her up slightly dragging her back to the mats. “Aaaah..” Having caught the well humoured sarcasm in his voice, which was going to take getting used to again, she knew all too well what was coming. "Besides, you need the practice." Hydra dropped her feet to the ground and tried to break out of his hold. Turning toward him she gave him a look of mocking anger. "Need?" Was he really suggesting she hadn't kept her skills at their peak? Breaking out of his grip finally Hydra watched as Randy started laughing at her reaction to his comment. Hydra walked over to where she had left her bag pulling her cell phone out and then grabbing the wireless speaker she had in her bag. She usually did her workouts with music playing and whether he liked it or not they were going to now. Dropping both her phone and the speaker back on top of her bag after starting her workout playlist she turned her attention back to Randy. “We’ll see who needs the practice. I've learned a few things while I was away.” She couldn’t help the cocky tone when she stepped back onto the mats. This was one thing she had definitely hoped would never change between them. Their training game as they had both called it was some of the most fun she could remember growing up… and she had missed it more than she had ever admitted to anyone. She couldn't think of a better way to get things back on track and apparently neither could he.

"You dropped your name? It was bad enough when you left but to drop your name as well?” The look on Randy’s face was hard to read but if Hydra had to put a finger on it she would have said a mix of confusion and pain.

Having to deal with all the small time indie companies was a bore for Hydra. She had all but demolished her competition wherever she went. She needed a challenge to give her inspiration. So when she got called up to the main roster she packed her bags and ran at it. There were a few people she wasn’t real thrilled to see but it was going to be inevitable that she would run into them eventually. If they knew what was good for them they would steer clear of her and not try to get in her way. Only time would tell if they were smart about it.
There were few things that got her adrenaline going like a good match with an opponent that would push her to her limits. Unfortunately that was not this match in this lack luster indie company that didn't really know what to do with truly gifted women on the roster. It was a disgrace the way she had to deal with the pitiful talent in this place until she got signed to a bigher company. How was she supposed to carve her name out of these people if they gave her nothing of substance to carve it out of?
