she's self-aware of just how oppressed she is, and how oppressed all the girls around her are. and she seems to be the only one who is. no one but her really questions the deeply rooted misogyny in these forced marriages, so she's forced to carry that awareness not just for herself, but for everyone else. she's forced to feel the injustice for all of them because the other girls don't really question it. and is that not so lonely?

she's compassionate to her fellow girls who also don't have a choice. and she is so fucking angry at everyone who does. this is where her dislike for pearl girls stems from. they had freedom, the one thing becka has always yearned for, and they threw it away. they chose to sacrifice their freedom for what? to live in what becka would describe as a nightmare?

Becka is often wrapped up in her own thoughts and pain and does not feel the need to cater to others, while her mother was uncomfortable with sitting in her thoughts, focuses on others to distract herself from discomfort.

I expected this flaw to cause her to sweep her husbands abuse under the rug, take her place as mourning widow and let them take her child.

I was NOT expecting her to overcome this character flaw in such a massive way. Instead of manically pretending nothing has changed when Becka comes back, she confronts the issue directly and takes initiative. Instead of ignoring her husbands abuse, she tells Becka that she should have killed him. Instead of turning a blind eye to her daughter's death, she sacrifices herself.

Becka was looking for god and justice, trying to right a wrong that could never be righted. In her search for divine justice, her mother died for her sins.

Imagine you become friends with another girl very young. She's beautiful oh my god so adorable. She's funny. She looks at you like you're the only person in the world. She holds your hand as you pray. She searches the rocks at the beach for objects. She makes up stories about them. She has nightmares. She links your pinkies as you walk. She looks back at you and smiles even at the risk of being hit by the aunts.

One day when you're dancing, and she brushed her thumb against your arm, and you realize you're utterly, madly in love with her.

Your dad hurt her. You kill him.
