I'm a Rick Riordan critic and I don't like most of HOO, but for what it's worth, I prefer to focus my blog on the stuff that I actually like - hence why most of my posts are about the first saga. i feel like rick riordan is an excellent example of why creative people need to work on different stuff because if you focus on one project for twenty-five years you will make yourself nuts
the retcons, the defensiveness. the inability to take criticism yet the insecurities revealed in his adaptation choices. trying to keep the whole thing together across three decades, but also lopping off crucial parts of it to try to save it. he should have said a fond goodbye and walked away a decade ago, instead he is locked in battle with his past self’s work forever
This was an archery field. They were about to do archery.
Percy’s heartbeat skipped.
For one brief, stupid moment, excitement rushed through him before he could stop it. They were actually going to shoot bows – real ones, not the cheap plastic toys from department stores.
For just a second, Percy forgot where he was.
He forgot everything except the fact that archery had always looked incredible. Robin Hood, Green Arrow, and every fantasy movie he had ever watched. Heroes pulling arrows from quivers with impossible confidence before splitting another arrow straight down the middle. It had always looked cool and fun.
The feeling barely lasted five seconds, and then reality caught up. Heroes could do archery. Perseus Jackson couldn’t.

I cannot watch a Percy Jackson edit without at least 5 comments going on about some "after HOO,Percy finally understood that Luke was right about the gods" like guys, Percy ALWAYS understood where Luke was coming from. The narrative and Percy(correctly )demonize Luke for many things—his stance on the gods is not one of them. We are 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘥 to understand where luke is coming from, supposed to sympathize with both him and the demigods that chose to follow him(see: Ethan Nakamura). however,we are 𝑛𝑜𝑡 supposed to agree with him. (Which is what Percy does)
𝑁𝑜,Percy would 𝑵𝒐𝒕 infact join Luke if he by some oracle intervention knew what tbe gods would later do in Heroes of Olympus, because 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐨 𝐊𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐬.
The problem isn't the fact that Luke was wrong about the gods—the problem was that he was trying to replace a bad system with an even worse one.
Adding on to this,NO,Percy wouldn't have joined like if annabeth had(because *shocker* Percy is his own person and has his own moral compass that 𝑖𝑠𝑛'𝑡 defined by his girlfriend). No,he wouldn't have joined Kronos if Sally had died. No,he wouldn't have joined if Luke had actually tried to convince him instead of yk.. immediately trying to kill himm hd wouldn't have if posiden hadn't claimed him. No he wouldn't have joined if Luke had waited a few years.
"Oh Percy would have joined Kronos if X,Y or Z happened" 𝘯𝘰 𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥𝘯'𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦! You know why? Because 𝗞𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗼𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗱𝘀. The Titans are worse than the gods. The gods suck,but Kronos sucks even more .There is no scenario where Percy would have joined Kronos because the Titans are 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 presented as a better alternative. Never. At least the gods have 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦 redeeming moments. Kronos does not.
And if memory serves me correctly,part of the Titans' plans was to enslave all mortals?he was going to make them suffer.There is no absolutely no universe where Percy would be remotely okay with that. None.
As discussed above,that is a primary reason Luke is a villain. That he killed and hurt so many demigods(supposedly the people he's trying to help) in an effort to replace the gods with the Titans who would have done ten times worse.
Yeah so I hate the "bad friend Percy" narrative pushedin heroes of Olympus so much (using characters like bob and calypso)
First of all,This might sound harsh,but Percy didn't owe lapetus/bob 𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘵.
Didn't owe him an apology. Didn't owe him friendship. Didn't owe him so much as a checkup. Didn't owe him anything in "recompense" for getting his memory wiped.
You know why?
Because the only reason Percy needed to wipe lapetus' memory was because he was 𝙩𝙧𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙢𝙪𝙧𝙙𝙚𝙧 Percy,Nico and Thalia. I don't know why people seem to be forgetting that.
And lapetus is a literal titan. Aka immortal. Aka 𝘶𝘯𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦. Against three demigods.This was the 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 scenario that allowed Percy Nico and Thalia to walk away with their lives. The 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 way to neutralize him that was available to Percy.
Percy doesn't owe him anything because lapetus getting dipped into the Lethe was a result of his own actions. Was his own damn fault for trying to kill three kids. I don't see why Percy needs to apologise for that.
Secondly,umm 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 exactly would Percy have had the time or opportunity to check on him? 'the sword of hades' takes place in between BOTL and TLO. So after that,Percy was dealing with war preparations + the knowledge that he would more then likely die ina few months. Then he was actively fighting a war. And then-shortly after that-he was abducted,put in a 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘢 for six months,and 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯 dropped off on the other side of the country with no memories.
Why and when exactly would Bob have been a priority for percy when he had a bunch of world ending shit to worry about? Sincerely speaking.
Third,you do know that Hades and Percy don't exactly have a good relationship. Percy is not Nico. He can't just waltze into the underworld whenever he feels like it. Not without risking major bodily harm or certain death(considering Hades attempts to do 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 two out of the three times Percy ended up there). And I don't see why he should.
Onto calypso,bruh this one makes me so mad. He literally makes the gods 𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝘆𝘅(a supposedly unbreakable vow) to release her. It's not his fault they don't honour that. It's not Percy's job to make sure the gods honour their -allegedlly unbreakable - oaths—especially when(as stated above) he gets abducted by hera soon afterwards,and the plot of HOO begins. When would he have had the opportunity to check and make sure she was released? He does more then just about anyone (aside from Leo) to free calypso. What else could be have done? It ain't his fault that gods are dicks.
This is a very long rant, essentially just to talk about this scene 🤓👇 Enjoy the ride, padawan
Point 1 - Chiron sucks, who cares
Look, I’m not calling Chiron incompetent.
I am, however, going to be pointing out that archery is the one class we know for sure Chiron is teaching Percy at camp, and he has failed at improving his abilities with a bow and an arrow in any way, shape, or form, as far as we know.
There, that’s a pretty neutral statement. No character bashing in this post.
It’s also important to notice that while Percy is really, REALLY bad at it, there's no canon indication of him having been cursed to never be able to learn archery, nor has any character (including Poseidon and Apollo, who might know more about that) ever stated that Poseidon’s kids are predisposed to be bad at it. If it’s not stated or hinted at in the narrative, then these explanations aren't valid, and considering both Apollo and Artemis really like him, it’s pretty safe to say that Percy being bad at archery is a matter of skill, which can be improved through practice, even if he never becomes a "great" or "really good" archer. Being able to make at least one good shot at a reasonable distance, though, could be life-saving for him, as proven by his fight against Geryon in The Battle of the Labyrinth.
Chiron just might not be the best teacher for his specific needs. Which is also the conclusion Apollo gets to! So great that he agrees with me <3
Point 2 - Apollo: "I can teach him better than you can"
Trying really hard not to start this by making a reference to "It's rotten work"/"Not to me, not if it's you".... aaaand failing.
But this isn't really the point I wanna make.
I couldn't talk about Apollo's offer to teach Percy archery without acknowledging that he does have an ego the size of Olympus and there is an element of arrogance to him saying that he'll succeed where others have failed.
But he's right!!
Is it really arrogance if you are literally the god of archery??? I don't think so. I think he's being realistic. Apollo is probably a great archery teacher (or even a great teacher in general) and could definitely do a better job than Chiron. That's just a fact, not even something he has to bother proving. And I'll stand by that until the day I die!
Next!
Point 3 - You gotta put in the work like everyone else, man
Now we get to the point I wanted to make.
I have been in fandom long enough to remember how popular it was in fanfics back then to have either Apollo or Artemis give Percy a blessing that would make him magically good at archery.
Now, I’m not pointing fingers and criticizing anyone; it’s fanfic, c’mon, if you want to make your favorite character magically good at something, or at least make him naturally talented (or even normal!) instead of naturally bad at it, I’m not judging.
But I like the way things played out in canon. Nowadays, especially after the rise of AI, I look really fondly at Apollo’s offer to teach Percy archery in the old-fashioned way instead of snapping his fingers and just making him good at it.
Apollo is the god of archery (amongst many other things); and you know how hard it is to learn it and become good at it?
I don’t, to be honest; I’m not an archer, I’ve never learned it. But I know it takes strength; you gotta have some really strong upper body muscles and core stability, which will be built through practice; and I know your posture will have to change to improve your shooting, and that you’re gonna have to develop and train your hand-eye coordination, not to mention the stuff you’ll have to learn about the bows, which can come in different shapes and be made of different materials, and about the tragectory of the arrows, and how different factors can change it. What happens with your shot if it’s not a clear day? How can the rain change the trajectory? And the wind? And the gravity? What if you’re shooting while riding a horse? Or running?
Learning archery, much like anything, takes a lot of practice and dedication. That’s no different for Apollo’s kids, btw; sure, some of them may be naturally gifted, but being talented doesn’t mean you can skip practice and still be a great archer. Apollo’s kids have to work to become good at it, just like everyone else. And it’s tough work, even if you like it. But I think they take after their father in their passion for learning and love for his subjects, which makes the experience worthwhile.
Now, can you see why it would be disrespectful for the god of archery to just make Percy good at it in a snap of fingers, without having to really work for it? What that would mean for the thousands of people (including his kids) who show up to practice every day to slowly build muscle, form, and knowledge of the skill?
And I have to say, making so the blessing just gives him "talent" or something, without erasing the necessity of training, doesn’t really appeal to me either. Why the fear of taking the long road? The unpaved road with thorny bushes, full of mud and rocks, the one that looks like a good place to get murdered by a stray arrow?
Apollo isn’t afraid of taking it. It’s tough work. Even to him, and especially if it’s Percy. But he’s volunteering to do it! And with that attitude, he could succeed!
Apollo offering to help Percy practice archery is a character-defining moment to me; it shows that he values dedication and genuinely believes anyone can learn. Most importantly, it shows that he cares about the process and not just the results. Which brings me to my next (and last!) point.
Point 4 - The first step to being good at something is sucking ass at it. Yes, even for Apollo.
That's it, I'll say it. I like that he makes bad haikus. Don't judge me! I think at this point you must realize why.
I know not everyone likes that he makes bad haikus. It’s silly; he gets minus 10000 aura points every time he does it; it looks like he doesn’t know his own subject; it makes you question how the god of poetry can possibly be bad at it, and yadayadayada. Apollo, get behind me! I’ll defend your case!
People are allowed to practice and to love a subject when they’re bad at it. An artist is an artist when they make art, even if it’s imperfect. I don’t think Apollo ended up as the god of so many subjects because he was just oh so perfect and immediately good at everything. I think him being bad at haikus in the pjo universe implies that he’s the god of poetry, archery, music, philosophy and so many other domains not because of his innate skills, but because of his passion for them. He loves these subjects enough to learn them, to practice even when he’s not good at them, even when no one likes what he’s doing, and everyone is making fun of him; all this because he truly loves the process and act of making it.
Poetry is a vast subject. It's also a subject subject, yk? There are so many ways to make poetry. So many types of poetry. And so many subjects! So many people defining what is good and what isn’t! What you are and aren't supposed to do! It’s hard to learn, it’s ever-changing. You can never really get to the bottom of it; there’s always more to learn, and you can keep going forever if you want to explore everything poetry has to give.
And Apollo wants! He knows god-knows how many types of poetry, from epics to sonnets, in god-knows how many languages, and he spends years, decades, centuries obsessing with them! And he’s not good at it from the get-go. But he’s doing it anyway; he’s getting the experience of being a baby artist with too much enthusiasm and not enough skill! And eventually, he’ll get better. He has all the time in the world for it, and he has the dedication and the passion that breeds a great artist.
This applies to everything else.
That’s the energy he brings to archery, which he’s great at, and he might have always been great at, but he knows that not everyone who explores his domain was born with a bow and an arrow in their hands and a natural talent; Percy wasn’t. He’s really bad at it. He’s terrible, it’s almost impressive.
And yet.
For all of the reasons stated above.
Of course Apollo knows that Percy can learn to shoot and become a good archer. Of course he thinks that Percy refusing his lessons just bc he’s bad at it is nonsense. He thinks shooting is fun; doing it in the chariot while flying over the U.S. is the best fun there is. The point is not being good, really; becoming good is inevitable, having fun is the reason. That’s the mentality! And he lives by it.
Also. Important to note. Let’s go back to Exhibit A.
He specifically said, “if [Percy] ever wanted archery lessons”...
Which implies he can still call in the favor!
Go for it, Percy!

A hc that lives rent free in my head is that older demigods, especially ones from Hephaestus and Ares cabins (have you seen these bitches? They can pick a building up and not even flinch), are unofficially considered ladders for younger/short demigods.
Like, if there’s some big gathering of people, and you’re short but you want to see what’s happening. The only thing you have to do is find the closest person that, by the looks of it, can pick you up and ask them for a hand.
It sometimes looks uncanny, because some demigods, if the person they’re helping is old enough, have their arms crossed on their chest, and sometimes seem to not even realize that there’s someone sitting on their shoulders.
Older/stronger demigods will have two kids sitting on their shoulders(one on each) like on those old pictures of circus strongmen.
headcanon that percy likes to occasionally drop into the news reports and crime cases against him just to hear himself described as "percy jackson, 16, tall, well built, framed for terrorism, anarchy, murder....." and be like

One thing about me is that I could write a long post about anything as long as I did it in one go. But if I take a break from writing it for any reason it's going to take months. Even if the post is smaller :( And I really want to finish it :(
I can't believe Rick is gonna have me defending Hera too after already doing so with Zeus...
But while yeah she was absolutely terrible in the heroes of olympus series with the whole kidnapping and erasing peoples memories thing, in tbotl, Rick's writing of Hera is just misogynistic, let's be real
Yes, she has a terrible past with Hercules and even her own son. Funnily enough, the other gods who show up to offer help in their missions aren't criticized that harshly for their past actions, but more so for the role they're playing currently in the story. And in this book? Hera is helping them a lot, actually. And she doesn't even need the mission to involve clearing her name or getting her sister back or trying to convince her son to change his mind; she's doing it bc it benefits the camp, which benefits the gods, and it's strategically wise to do so.
And I do think that at least one of the things she's criticized for doesn't really make that much sense.
Percy gets mad at her for not paying to get Nico free passage through Geryon's ranch. Well, why would Hera know about Nico's whereabouts? Percy keeps Nico's father a secret from everyone until Nico uses his powers at the end of this book. At the time that Hera was paying for their safe travel, Nico wasn't part of their mission, and she had no reason to know he was a son of Hades, or to keep tabs on him and know he was there.
From what we know about Hera, it actually would've made more sense for her to ensure he wouldn't be taken to the titan army if she knew about him and his parentage, bc she's concerned about the war, and isn't really the type to waste the opportunity of getting a powerful ally to their side, least of all to give him freely to the enemy.
But at this point in the story, it makes more sense for her to not know about him at all, so there's no reason for us or Percy to get mad at her for not going out of her way to ensure no one was left behind! She was helping them in their mission, and Nico wasn't part of it. As much as I love to see Percy getting mad at her on Nico's behalf, this scene, to me, shouldn't exist. After all, did we get mad at Poseidon in the first book for only giving Percy three pearls to get out of the underworld, despite Percy planning to save Sally too?
(The circumstances were a bit different; they likely wouldn't have been able to get her out without Hades' explicit permission, but whatever, if they did, there wouldn't be a fourth pearl to give her, and yet the story knows there's no point in getting mad at Poseidon for this)
And did the narrative or the characters criticize Apollo that harshly in ttc when he didn't care about Annabeth's fate?? Did Percy end this book on bad terms with him?
Did Thalia ever mention Halcyon Green's story to Percy in that book? Or were we allowed to form a more positive opinion of Apollo based on his current actions?
I'm not saying Hera wasn't a jerk in her conversation with Percy and Annabeth. But Rick was making the narrative particularly critical of her for no good reason.
She congratulates them on completing the mission to save the camp. Which they did
But then Rick makes Annabeth go out of her way to refute this. Which??? I'm gonna be honest, this is not the type of stuff you usually discuss with a god, unless it's one you're more familiar with, like Percy with his father or Hermes, for example. Otherwise, Hera's dismissive answer is exactly the type of response you would expect. And why wouldn't she say this? Luke committed many crimes, and so did Daedalus, so much so that he was cursed by Athena, and he was already cheating death anyway. Hera wasn't close to them; why would she care about their deaths? Saying that they are better off gone is one of the nicest things she could've said.
And Pan??? He was already dead; he just hadn't faded completely bc of the satyrs. They couldn't have saved him anyway; they didn't fail him at all.
This is definitely the kind of moment where Percy might not appreciate her comment, but much like he did with Apollo, he would take a deep breath and understand that, yeah, gods are like that.
Of course you could say, well, Annabeth cared about both, and she was having an emotional moment about this just before Hera showed up, it makes sense for her to get mad at her.
But then, if Annabeth is going to be the only one Hera is going to get back at for this (with the whole thing about cows following her around), at least let her be the one who really argues with her, instead of mostly just agreeing with Percy. And let the narrative not agree entirely with her as well! Daedalus killed a child, and Luke tried to do so many times too; I mean, in this book alone he sent demigods to be killed for entertainment and caused his younger brother to go mad in the labyrinth. It's not unreasonable to not feel really that bad for either of them.
But then again!!!! Did they really need to fight her over this??? All this started bc she was congratulating them and later asking for offerings. But did anyone get mad at the gods in the last book when they were all partying hours after Zoe's death, Luke's supposed death and after losing Bianca in the mission too? Were any of them arguing with anyone who congratulated them on their mission?
Hera's kind of an asshole, sure, BUT SHE SAVED THEIR LIVES MULTIPLE TIMES AND THEY LIKELY WOULD NOT HAVE SURVIVED WITHOUT HER HELP. Being that dismissive of her is not only unwise, but genuinely unfair.
She got rid of Janus for them, paid so they wouldn't have to fight Geryon (even if they did end up doing so, once again, WITH HER HELP tho I have Opinions about the idea that Artemis and Apollo wouldn't have helped Percy in that moment — you can't make me fall for this propaganda), and she saved Percy's life by getting him to Ogigia to be cared for by Calypso, not to mention the fact that she was the one who gave them a tip about Percy knowing the answer to how to navigate the labyrinth and then sent them to Hephaestus to help them realize what it was. And once again, her comment about Nico? It's her only crime, and it doesn't even make sense for her to commit it, Rick just wanted her to look bad. God forbid a GODDESS with a controversial past gets some good pr in these books, as opposed to the many GODS with controversial pasts that get great pr in these books, right?
Also, important to notice that Hera was already being very tolerant with them, considering Rick makes Annabeth be honestly kinda disrespectful to her in their first encounter.

Hera was offering them a wish, which she wasn't obliged to do; it's not her fault Annabeth chose something they already had. But her tip about Percy knowing the answer was useful anyway. It's more than what they had going into this mission. Sure, Hera's answer was frustrating but that's how the gods operate. And she was right; getting something and having the wits to use it are two different things. Not to mention, it's a really nice quote. Annabeth is letting her frustration get in her way, and being very entitled. Hera could've gotten mad at her over this, but she lets it slide and just gives her some food for thought. She's being low-key nice most of the time in this book, and being repeatedly disrespected in return.
Anyway, in conclusion, THEY DID NEED HERA'S HELP and she was the immortal who interfered the most on a mission for their benefit, so I think she can be a bit of a jerk about it and still get some offerings. #myopinion #shecould'vesaidworseanditwouldvebeenjustified #i'mnottalkingabouthoosodon'ttalkabouthooeither #thisisadoylistanalysistreatitaccordingly
i think poseidon would have kids a lot with women who work in marine fields and it's like highkey funny to me that if percy works in that field then he's got a bunch of little siblings who spot him working with their mom and then wrongly conclude that he's their dad

I'm gonna be honest with you anon
I struggle a lot with gender in general, and in recent years I have come to the conclusion that I'm actually agender, but like. With lots of issues. So i'm not actually good at creating any hc's or analysis related to a character identifying as a specific gender bc I just don't really have any basis for that experience ;-;
As someone transfem myself, I'm probably projecting to an extent with my headcanons, but that's inevitable. I tried to make it different from me though.
I think there's not that much textual support, except maybe for how he excludes himself compared to boys in general when describing Silena? But we can still hypothesize what it'd be like if he did transition.
I definitely think she started by just feeling weird about her beard. Probably at first she just shaved regularly. I'd also say that going by the lack of stubble in TLO, either she didn't have beard growth until after that (but I don't think there was any in SON either) or the Styx temporarily inhibited the growth. The same thing applies to Tartarus.
At some point though, she notices it, and starts shaving often, I expect. I actually think she might genuinely start to use her water powers more, as she becomes more uncomfortable with body hair, especially as she and Annabeth become more intimate. I think she probably thinks of it as gross, and she starts, like, using her water powers like a blade to cut her body hair away efficiently.
Placing this according to the original timeline, I think she'd not really know being trans was a thing until post-BoO, when she maybe goes to a GSA meeting or something at Goode. I feel like Paul would probably be a supervising teacher there (personally I hc him as bi, but I also think he wouldn't be out). Percy would be going there because she wants to support Nico however she can, but after a while she might also learn about trans people.
I feel like she's going to be torn for a while even once she starts thinking about the possibility. I think she'd kind of feel guilty about it, like it's frivolous, and I don't think she'd actually try on make up or women's clothes or anything, it'd be a self-denial thing.
I think the most likely person to get through to her is probably going to be Rachel, who would also be the first one she'd confide in. She loves Annabeth, but that makes it scarier in a way, plus Rachel is more likely to know about this stuff (plus I'm a firm believer in Rachel and Percy being besties like they canonically were, when I catch you Rick!).
I feel like (and I think Percy would think the same) Grover would be fine with it but wouldn't get gender enough to help Percy understand herself, Hazel would again be supportive but she's from the 1930s and that's going to make it hard, and Frank also wouldn't have a great handle on it (even if the family gift makes transition super easy and it's actually pretty common in the family, which I think would be fun, Frank still doesn't have any of that history).
(Unrelatedly my mind was just hit by the flashbang of transmasc Frederick Chase and for some reason that works really well in my mind, but I feel like he'd also not tell his kids about it because he's from an older generation.)
I think Rachel would probably have at least one friend in St. Clarion's who is transmasc and hiding it, and I think she'd both help talk Percy through it and maybe introduce her to the transmasc friend.
After a few weeks, I think Percy would feel able to come out, honestly, especially with some very gentle prodding from Sally. She'd probably take it slow, and I also think she wouldn't want to say it over Iris message to anyone because she wants to tell Poseidon in person and doesn't want it getting gossiped about (or at least that's how I'm doing it in my fic).
At the same time though I think she's going to tell Tyson and Poseidon is going to have an inkling. It really depends on how good their relationship is after HoO, but I like their relationship, so I learn towards it being good. I think Poseidon might offer a magical transition (assuming the ancient laws don't constrain him, which they do in my fic because it counts as a direct gift) and I definitely think Percy might be tempted. Percy would feel bad about others who don't get to transition, but she's not going to tell Poseidon about them outright, and I think in the end she'd accept, maybe after posing the question as a hypothetical to her transmasc friend.
As for the name, I genuinely don't know. I think to an extent she'd be proud of the name Percy, and would consider naming herself that instead of Perseus. That way she gets to complain more if gods or monsters use Perseus. On the other hand, I've seen Iphigenia, with Jenny for short, used as a form of dark humor, as the girl who was a sacrifice to the gods. I feel like Sally would veto that though. Atalanta could work, I believe she had a mostly happy ending if you ignore the lions bit.
She might be tempted by Ariadne but would feel weird with Mr. D existing, and same with Psyche. Penelope could work, but it feels a bit weird and stuffy for Percy. The final option is Andromeda, shortened to Andi, since she had a happy ending along with Perseus, but that's also going to feel a bit weird. I've also seen jokes about Persephone offering magic HRT, but honestly I find that unlikely.
Ultimately, I lean towards either Atalanta (hard to shorten though), Andromeda, or just Percy by itself.
After that, I think on the whole everyone would be accepting? I do think it's going to make Apollo hit on her even more though lol (I'm a firm believer in Apollo having a crush on Percy even if I don't fully ship Perpollo).

This also made me think of something: I think I do actually hc demigods/beings related to the sea deities like Poseidon (or Aphrodite, for instance) to have a more loose/transformative relationship with their body and identity, including gender, gender presentation and physical appearance in general. Something about what Poseidon says about the ocean not liking to be restrained... And Frank gets the power of changing into different animals from him... There's something there, I feel, about these demigods often not liking being constrained by their original bodies in a way that can even transcend gender and species. Like, them being transfem/transmasc/non-binary or just gnc is common, but I can also see some of them just not fucking with the whole human-look at all and asking their parents for a permanent mer form.
think the most logical trajectory for percy's career path is starting some kind of marine life rescue & rehabilitation facility. and like this truly just makes too much sense to overlook:
companies/facilities/organizations that service mortals and also have a supernatural side are a dime a dozen in this universe, and the blending of mythology with modern society is truly the essence of pjoverse. so percy running a nonprofit (or something like that) to help natural and supernatural creatures is perfectly fitting.
he's already doing marine rescue as a passion project at the ripe age of 14 and he is, obviously, a natural. plus it fits perfectly with his natural disposition - hero, kind, helper, active, works on his own schedule.
if you think about it percy's also kind of a natural entrepreneur and hustler. he's very resourceful and works very hard when motivated/passionate about something, he's so clever and has natural tendencies towards selling things and smooth-talking people and he's excellent at leading and inspiring people towards a goal. i think he'd really enjoy being self-employed for something he truly cares about. like when you think about the kid who sold candy out of his dorm and bribed his way into the underworld and told hades to give charon a raise and rallied a group of forty teenagers to save the world and dispelled a senate of riled up romans it's like. wait hold on he'd actually be... excellent at giving keynote speeches at fundraising events
the spirit of pan went into him and charged him to reclaim the wild so this is a fulfillment of that.
the aquarium in atlanta bothers him so much and he can't stop thinking about it and promises to come back for the animals so i think this shows more than anything that this is a real passion for percy. and it also shows you how it could start organically - he makes good on his promise to reform that specific aquarium and when he mentions it to grover, grover goes completely ballistic and throws everything he has at helping percy achieve this goal, and as the besties that they are, they realize, huh, we could like, keep doing this together and that would be great, right?
percy would have easy partners with rachel and grover, two environmental and animal rights activists that have a lot of available resources at their disposal. with their help running the business side of things, percy would be free to only participate in the hands-on parts that he actually enjoys. and like what is the point in having a millionaire friend with a guilty conscience if he's not going to leverage that, you know?
plus i think annabeth would be involved as a side gig since she's an animal lover too. i also think that, given her natural workaholic tendencies, she'd be really happy to have a long-term project to share with percy that he's passionate about.
if they make their own nonprofit (or something like that) then percy can easily work there without needing a degree. i think percy is perfectly capable of studying marine biology or oceanography if that's what he really wanted & if he actually just got accommodations and wasn't in danger, for once. but regardless, he's never liked or taken naturally to traditional classroom learning, and given his mental state, i think it's like, bordering on self-harm to shove him into a bachelors program right out of high school lol. this way if he wants a degree he can get one at his leisure.
they can work freely without being constrained by the mist if they just run their own organization/facility. like this way they're free to employ satyrs, naiads, nymphs, cyclopes, etc. and rescue mythical creatures. they can finally get the ophiotaurus out of his bubble on olympus and enrich his life. they can work with the hudson and east river gods to start anti-pollution initiatives. it just opens up all kinds of possibilities.
rachel has mortal resources, but between percy's status as poseidon's son and grover's status as lord of the wild, they would have tons of access to mythical connections and it would be such a waste not to use them. like percy can then accept donations in the form of sand dollars and magic sea pearls and they don't have to worry about what the bookeepers are going to think.
i just love the idea of percy going to his dad's palace for monthly meetings with The Board of Ocean Operations or something like that. like how cute
