Isolated among festivity (2023-24)
Sophia Korosidis, Isolated among festivity, 2023-24, boxes, acrylic and miscellaneous objects.
This is another piece that's part of my thesis.
"The box art not only tackles the feelings of isolation, but also the differences between men and women in the Greek community. These three boxes are arranged on a diagonal decline, and are meant to resemble different tiers. The two boxes placed at the top represent the men, while the bottom box represents the women. Within the men’s boxes, the contents inside are reflective of the leisurely activities that Greek men often partake in. Some of the boxes contain images related to the community centers, which a majority of them are run by men. The top box contains items with leisurely possessions such as bottles of Ouzo (a Greek liquor), as well as an ashtray and a cigarette. The other men’s boxes are equally as lively as the next. Meanwhile, there is only one box dedicated to Greek women, which is drastically opposite to the other two boxes. With heavily bleak tones, the box contains only a thimble, needle, and a white spool of thread. These objects are referring to the very limited, traditional roles placed on the women in the Greek community, such as tailoring. Even within these roles, women are still expected to serve men. The box itself, as well as the items inside, are incredibly smaller than the other two boxes in order to emphasize how little space Greek women have within their own community."
This is the finished piece! While the boxes are separate, they'll be hung as one fused piece during my show. They'll be hung diagonally in order to emphasize the hierarchy through a tier-like display. I'll be sure to post it when everything is hung.
