Same old, same old
I just realized that I'm not insane. No, really. Today I would like to renounce my aspirations of becoming one of the leading voices of tech in the Philippines. I'm just another monkey with a typewriter now, and I figure it won't do me any good to keep doing the same thing as everyone else any longer. I used to read the work of others and think, boy does this guy suck. Don't you have any taste? Where's your sense of wonder? Do you even know what you're talking about? Too bad I couldn't think any them into being ashamed of their sub par work. It's just so easy to copy-paste bulleted specs, regurgitate buzzwords from PR kits, and post photos taken with your "I'm a photographer" DSLR that somehow, a bunch of otherwise unintelligible jargon mixed with technological mumbo jumbo can be deemed actually acceptable. Readers read about as much as newborn babies (read: they don't). Pictures sell. Videos sell. Text quickly becomes old and forgotten. Everyone's a quote-unquote techie now, talking about gadgets. And they're doing it for free. With the bar set so low, I just can't compete. And this is me trying to come to terms with it. Ironically, I started off doing the same thing. But there were only a handful of tech blogs back then, and the people who read them actually gave a damn. Now it's people who used a 1-click root or jailbreak solution for their smartphones and proudly call themselves nerds or hackers, reading posts and watching videos about all things tech. And from such esteemed authorities on tech as... any one of the dozens whose names are some combination of the words that represent the country or the Filipino people and some vaguely technical term from the dictionary (i.e. "The Juan Electron" -- wait, I might actually be on to something with th-). So I have decided to quit. It just occurred to me that if I keep on doing the same things that I'm doing now, then I'm going to keep getting the exact same results. I'm here because I thought I'd lay off the whole tech blogging thing for a bit while I figure out what to do next. First, I'm going to fulfill some prior commitments and whatnot (I still have at least a couple of hardware reviews to publish), but for now, I'm sticking with this along with microblogging to spend my time on the Internet. I'm done with doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. The game has definitely changed. And this is something else.
