The voices in our community trying to exclude us may be loud, but they are not right, and they do not speak for the community as a whole or our history or anything at all.

I think it was Sir Ian McKellen (another queer elder) who said he supports the trans community in no small part because he remembers the old days. When “ordinary or garden gays” like him were the targets. The primary targets are currently trans people, but he knows how it all works.

Also, Butler would’ve already been around during the AIDS crisis. I remember an elderly lesbian reminiscing about massive ructions in the 1980s in lesbian circles over whether they should abandon and publicly denounce queer men to protect themselves. Since straight people blamed queer men for AIDS and some lesbians felt it was bad publicity to be associated with gay men at the time.

me: “I love and forgive him.”

Customer: “Don’t, he doesn’t deserve it. Anyway, I’m calling about -”

Arnulf: *small, very self-satisfied baa*
