"The Sins" Introduction
((AN: Hi everyone! This is Hanna, the 2nd admin of this blog's 2 admins and the creator of the Seven Deadly Sins gang. Their story is told through 8 pieces, an introduction and one character-focused piece per person. The intro is below, but a note: I write these stories as screenplays, since they were originally conceived of as comic books, which have a similar format. That is to say, what's posted below may look really unfamiliar, but it should be readable. If you're curious about how this style works, check out this formatting guide from the Office of Letters and Light, the people who run NaNoWriMo. Thanks, and hope you enjoy!))
A derelict, small brick building is set against a backdrop of similar structures. The staircase is visible, but not extremely close. Leaning on the brick building is GREED (early 20s), with short black hair and dark skin. She's obviously poor and a little beat-up. ORPHAN approaches from somewhere in the dark.
GREED: Took you long enough.
ORPHAN: Good to see you, too. Doing well?
GREED: As can be expected. You?
ORPHAN: The usual. You know me better than to ask that sort of thing, Greed.
GREED: Hey, a girl's gotta try.
Orphan smiles, leans over, and kisses her on the cheek.
ORPHAN: It really is good to see you.
GREED: Yeah. You too.
Orphan pauses, put off.
ORPHAN: But?
GREED: What can I say. Here on business.
ORPHAN: Ah. And what is it Lust needs now, that she won't tell me herself?
GREED: It's Gluttony. She's gone missing.
ORPHAN: And that's urgent? She's done so before. The girl can take care of herself or die trying, as far as I care.
GREED: She's our sister, Orph. We just want you to keep an eye out.
ORPHAN: So why'd she send you?
GREED: You mean Lust? Other than that she hates you?
ORPHAN: Mmm.
GREED: Figures you're more likely to listen to me.
Orphan laughs.
ORPHAN: Go on home to Mama then, Greed. I'll keep an eye out for her.
GREED: We can't stay and talk?
ORPHAN: Nope.
GREED (smiles): Didn't think so. See you around, Orph.
ORPHAN: Take care of yourself.
Orphan kisses Greed on the head once more, then walks away. Greed leans on the building and watches him.
INT. FIGHT RING - NIGHT
A 30-something year old man is thrown through the air by a punch to the face. We pan away to see SLOTH (late teens). She's bouncing from foot to foot in a ready position, panting. She has long, grayish brown hair in a ponytail and wears a patch over her right eye. A whistle blows, and the crowd outside the ring cheers. Sloth lets out a breath and tucks her hair behind her ear, then ducks away and through the crowd, to a doorway that she exits through.
Sloth enters a somewhat makeshift locker room and sits on the bench, stripping off her shirt and using it to dab sweat from her face. CARDINAL stands a little ways away, watches her briefly, and then goes back to what he was doing. Sloth looks up at him.
SLOTH: Got something to say?
CARDINAL: Why would you think that?
SLOTH: Because you're not creepy enough to look at me just because I'm shirtless.
CARDINAL: ... Just trying to think the last time I saw you lose, is all.
SLOTH: That would be against you.
CARDINAL: Huh.
SLOTH (laughs): Don't flatter yourself, Cardinal. Not that you're not talented, but it certainly helps that you're willing to use your left hook.
CARDINAL: Is that a complement?
SLOTH: No, but it's not an insult.
Sloth stands and pulls on her shirt, then exits through the door she entered from. Greed is waiting outside for her.
SLOTH: Any luck?
GREED: What do you think.
SLOTH: More trouble than she's worth.
GREED: Does anyone believe you when you're lying?
SLOTH: Sometimes. Let's go... Lust will be waiting.
INT. HOME - NIGHT
Four young women sit around a small, dark living room. Light comes from a dim overhead lamp and a burning fireplace. One woman is LUST, in her early 20s and with short blonde hair and light skin, wearing white clothes and a crucifix. There is WRATH, a beautiful girl in her late teens with long and long, wavy red hair, blue eyes, and pale skin; ENVY, a long-haired brunette in her early 20s with light brown skin and brown eyes; and PRIDE, also early 20s, with brown skin, brown eyes, and long brown hair in a braid.
There is a knock, and Greed and Sloth enter. The others stand up.
LUST: Well?
GREED: Nothing. As of the moment. Orphan says he'll keep an eye out, but no promises.
LUST: Of course not. He never makes promises.
ENVY: She can't have gotten too far.
LUST: Are you... she could be halfway across the city by now.
WRATH: Lust, calm down.
LUST: Calm down?! Do you know what she might have gotten into? The chances that she'll come back -
SLOTH: Are good, historically speaking. It's not like this hasn't happened before.
LUST: That makes it okay?
GREED: Lust.
Lust, who has begun pacing and gesturing, stops.
GREED: We've done all we can for now. Keeping this up just makes everyone more upset. If you want to go look in the morning, fine. We will. But I know it's been over a day since you slept, and it's not helping her.
LUST: Who's in charge here?
GREED: You. Because you have the sense to know I'm right about this.
Lust is briefly silent. Finally, she sighs and deflates, turning and exiting into a hallway.
LUST (as she exits): Go get some rest, girls.
Beat.
PRIDE: Was that... necessary?
GREED: Do you have a problem?
SLOTH: Hey. Cut it out. Last thing we need right now is another argument.
ENVY: We just need some sleep. She's right.
PRIDE: Which she?
SLOTH: Pride.
PRIDE: ... Sorry. I just... I'm worried.
GREED: Not your fault. I'm sorry too. I mean... we all are.
WRATH: Worried.
GREED: Yeah.
SLOTH: So we sleep. Maybe Orphan will have some news in the morning. 'Till then, pack it in. And for God's sake, someone... Envy. Go talk to Lust. I'm worried about her, too.
Envy stands and leaves. Shortly, the rest, except Sloth and Wrath, do the same.
SLOTH: You okay?
WRATH: Yeah, just... I think I'll sleep in here tonight.
SLOTH: Should I stay?
WRATH: I've got it covered, Sloth. Thanks.
SLOTH: ... Yeah. Night.
Sloth leaves: Wrath watches her, then quietly lays on the couch, covering herself with a blanket.
EXT. STREET - DAY
Greed is wandering among a small crowd moving in different directions. She brushes by a man, who we don't really see. His wallet appears in her hand. She gets a few steps away before he stops her.
ORPHAN (O.S.): Miss?
Greed turns around to see Orphan, smiling at her.
ORPHAN: I believe you have something of mine.
GREED (smiles): Can't pull the wool over your eyes, huh?
ORPHAN: What can I say? You learned from the best.
GREED: Hah hah.
ORPHAN: How are things with the girls?
GREED: Could be worse. Could also be better, but... could be worse.
ORPHAN: Lust?
GREED: Since when do you care?
ORPHAN: Really, I don't.
GREED: ... She's okay. Worried.
ORPHAN: Huh.
GREED: What?
ORPHAN: What what?
GREED (laughs): Don't try to play me, Orph. I learned from the best. You know something.
ORPHAN: ... I saw Gluttony last night.
GREED: ... Are you kidding me?
ORPHAN: I wouldn't kid, Greed.
GREED: Well where the hell is she? I can get Lust now and -
ORPHAN (grabbing her shoulders): Greed.
Greed stops mid-sentence, a little shocked.
ORPHAN: You're not gonna like it.
INT. CLUB - NIGHT
Greed and Lust, staying close to each other, amble through the crowd in an obviously skeevy bar. There is a stage and several tables. Most of the people around them are men in their 30s or older and very drunk. There are tables, a bar, and a stage set up at one end of the space. The scene is old-fashioned and run-down.
Lust and Greed sit. A woman offers them drinks. Lust declines, Greed accepts.
LUST: Can you really afford that?
GREED: Better question: Can I afford not to? Considering the situation, I think not.
LUST: So it's a good idea for you to get tipsy around a bunch of large drunk men.
GREED: Not exactly, but I really don't want to be sober to see this. And I want to be sober when dealing with you afterwards even less.
LUST (looking around): He's sure this is the place?
GREED: Well he said so, but it's not like you trust him anyway.
LUST: I trust you, Greed. That's enough.
For a moment, Greed looks at a loss. Then the lights dim and a voice comes crackling over the intercom.
ANNOUNCER (V.O.): Howdy, rowdy boys! Welcome to Lights Out, the best entertainment there is down under. Now remember: no drinking unless you get it here, no fighting unless you avoid the furniture, and no fucking unless you let us watch. And without further ado, allow me please to introduce our beautiful guest this evening: the Sweet Sixth Sin, Delilah in the White!
Big-band music begins to play and the curtains onstage part. Stage lights turn on and reveal GLUTTONY onstage. She's young, no older than her mid-teens, light skinned with black hair and brown eyes. Her costume makes her look overdressed and though she's made-up to be sexy her age makes it feel very awkward. She doesn't act awkward, though: she dances erotically and confidently, catering to the men in the audience, wanting their attention and receiving it easily. Lust looks angry, Greed merely a bit amused.
The song finishes.
EXT. CLUB - NIGHT
Greed and Lust are leaning on the wall outside the club, in an alley. Set into the boards close by is a door. They're silent.
Gluttony, out of make-up and costume, exits the stage door. Lust steps forward.
LUST: Nice performance.
Gluttony pauses, recognizes Lust, then moves on.
GLUTTONY: Nobody asked you.
Lust and Greed follow her: they talk while walking.
LUST: What are you doing here, Gluttony.
GLUTTONY: Whatever I feel like, and it's none of your business.
LUST: Like hell it's not. You disappear in the middle of the night, no warning, go missing for three days. Cause us all to worry our heads off and then show up at... at a place like this?
GLUTTONY: It's called a nightclub, Lust. You should try it some time.
LUST: Don't be smart with me.
GLUTTONY: What are you, my mother?
LUST: No, I'm your sister.
Gluttony stops and turns around.
GLUTTONY: No, you're not. Not really. None of us are. And that's swell for you if you wanna just go ahead and pretend, but as for me, I'm done. I don't need sisters. I don't need any of it.
She attempts to walk away. Lust grabs her by the shoulder and turns her around.
LUST: They'll eat you alive, Gluttony.
GLUTTONY: Who says I want to go on living?
GREED: Don't talk like that.
GLUTTONY: What, is this a tribunal? I can make my own decisions Greed. I'm not a child, not down here. So what if I do get ruined. No one would care.
LUST: We would care.
GLUTTONY: ... Sorry, Lust. But in the grand scheme of things, the fake affection of a fake family doesn't amount to much. See you around.
Gluttony shrugs Lust off and continues on her way. Neither Lust nor Greed follow.
INT. HOME - NIGHT
Sloth, Wrath, Envy and Pride wait in the living room, Envy and Pride talking quietly. Greed and Lust enter.
SLOTH: How'd it go?
LUST (continuing to walk): It didn't.
Lust proceeds down the hall. The girls turn to Greed.
GREED: ... She pretty much summed it up.
ENVY: Is she okay?
GREED: She's obstinate, childish, foolish, and impulsive. But she's okay... at least, physically.
ENVY: I can't believe she'd do such a thing...
SLOTH: I can. Things like that... it catches up with you no matter how far you run.
PRIDE: So what do we do?
GREED: You all can do what you want. As for me, I'm planning to go pass out and wake up to find this is all a bad dream. Sleep tight, girls.
Greed exits. Shortly, Envy and Pride follow. Sloth remains and looks at Wrath hesitantly.
SLOTH: Wrath.
WRATH: ... Please. Just for now.
SLOTH: ... Just promise me you'll be okay.
WRATH: Trust me. Another night sleeping in the living room won't do me irreparable mental damage.
SLOTH: Good night, Wrath.
WRATH: Good night yourself.
Sloth retreats into the hall. Wrath sits on the couch, then lies down and closes her eyes after a few seconds.
INT. HOME - NIGHT - LATER
Wrath remains sleeping on the couch. She wakes at the sound of something falling, and a human voice cursing under its breath. She sits bolt upright, frightened, and is reaching for the lamp to turn it on when a look of recognition dawns on her face and she pauses.
WRATH: ... Gluttony?
GLUTTONY (O.S.): ... Who's there?
WRATH: It's Wrath... me. Gluttony, come here so I can see you.
For a moment there is no response. Then, slowly, Gluttony walks close enough for Wrath to see her in the limited light. She looks like she's been crying.
Wrath stands up and embraces her.
WRATH: We thought we might've lost you.
GLUTTONY (crying): I know. I'm so sorry.
WRATH: Ssh. It's okay, honey. You're safe.
GLUTTONY: I'm so sorry, Wrath. I didn't know what to do. I didn't feel like I could -
WRATH: Ssh. Ssh. It's okay, honey. You're safe here, they can't hurt you.
GLUTTONY: I didn't mean what I said to her. Lust. I didn't mean... I'm so sorry!
Gluttony collapses into Wrath's arms and Wrath sits on the couch with her spread across her lap, stroking Gluttony's hair.
WRATH: I know, honey. I know.
EXT. ALLEY - DAY
Greed is again out walking the streets, head down. This time, rather than brushing by a figure, she collides with one. His hands clasp her shoulders: she looks up to see Orphan smiling down at her.
ORPHAN: You should watch your aim.
GREED: You should watch where you stand.
He releases her and leans against the wall. Greed looks back at him, standing not far off in the alley.
ORPHAN: You find her?
GREED: Yeah.
ORPHAN: How was she?
GREED: Bad. Not that you care.
ORPHAN: ... You've been spending too much time around Lust.
GREED: Why do you think I'm out so early?
ORPHAN (laughs): What are you doing with them, Ro.
GREED: You kicked me out. Or did you forget?
ORPHAN: So, I'm inviting you back.
GREED (laughs): Don't think I buy that for a second, Orph. You know I like you. But we both know that you can't promise anything. You're not family.
ORPHAN: Are they?
GREED: They're close enough.
ORPHAN: But they're not real.
GREED: What do you expect, Orph. They're better than nothing. Real as anything I've ever done, certainly.
ORPHAN: Realer than I am?
Greed walks over, puts a hand on Orphan's chin, and kisses him on the forehead.
GREED: Whoever said I thought you were real?
She walks away. Orphan watches, smiles, and fades into the alley's darkness.
