*Missed Call from [Valko]*
*Missed Call from [Valko]*
*Missed Call from [Valko]*
You finally picked up on the third ring.
“Hello? Valko? Are you alright—?”
“Hello? Hello? Helloooooooo? I can’t hear youuuu— just kidding. If you’re hearing this, I can’t come to the phone right now! Leave a message, and I’ll be right back.”
“Dammit!” You slammed down the phone at a speed that almost cracked the screen.
Valko hadn’t called you for days. Highly unusual for him, as he usually called you and messaged you every other minute when he had to go away for more than 48 hours. He wasn’t sure how long he was going away for this time, he had sheepishly explained to you. Some company…what was it? Origami fold? Wanted his cooperation and required his full presence.
He didn’t tell you what they wanted him for. Valko just told you that he had to go, he had no choice.
But he promised he’d be back.
He didn’t call you on the first day. Neither on the second. Or on the third, the fourth…it was strange, not having your big, strong wolf around. But he had assured you, so you chose to believe it, that he’d come back soon. In his wallowing absence, you curled up in his room, which you’ve yet had the chance to decorate for him. Valko hasn’t moved in long enough into your home for you to start yet.
You stared at the three missed calls piled up in your inbox. If only you hadn’t fallen asleep so quickly, maybe you would have been able to pick up.
You dialed him again, and again, and again.
The fifth day became the sixth, and still, nothing. You started leaving voicemails instead of hanging up.
“Heyy, don’t make me worry over nothing, Val. Call me back soon, okay?”
“I hope everything’s okay. Come back home soon!”
“I miss you Valko. I wish you’d just come home now.”
“I wish you’d never left.”
“I wish I’d never known you existed in the first place!”
You didn’t mean that. You were just upset, because called and complained to that stupid company, but they hadn’t given you back a single nod or reply.
So Valko must have given you the wrong company name! Right? Ah, that klutz, that beautiful idiot, always mixing up his words when he was nervous about something. Haha. There must be no such thing as Origami fold, only Info—
On the eighth night you called his sister. She didn’t know either. You tried everyone else in their pack. Nothing.
After the ninth night, you stood in the middle of Valko's undecorated room, surrounded by the boxes you'd never unpacked for him, and you squeezed the phone so hard that your hand ached.
“Sorry, I think our brother has—“
You didn’t dare believe it.
Valko would never do such a thing.
“Maybe you should check…”
You don't remember hanging up. You don't remember the drive, or whose car you took, or how you ended up here, in the clearing you and Valko used to disappear to on nights when the moon was full. How wonderful those nights were, rolling around together in the grass, Valko kissing you, nuzzling your neck, which would always inevitably lead into the two of you coupling right there, under the moonlight filtering through the trees.
Now, clouds were dragging slowly off the moon's face like a shroud being pulled back from something it would rather not show you. Like the magician’s veil being ripped off for a big finale, to reveal that what had disappeared, hadn’t gone after all.
You had come here hoping foolishly, desperately, that if you came back to this ridge where you met, he might be here after all. That he might come loping out of the tree line the way he always had, tongue lolling, tail held high, delighted with himself for scaring you.
Because by then, it was too late.
Your wolf was already gone.
Tears dampened the grass below your palms, your nails digging into the dirt as you watched the clouds dissapate from the sky, revealing the moon’s pale face in full.
Once upon a time, you had called Valko your moon, your man.
And once upon a time he had called you the sun. The most radiant star he has, and will ever set his eyes upon. The force he wakes up to, the light he bathes in.
More tears fell. And Valko didn’t materialise in front of you as you thought he might, meeting you again like he once did under the full moon.
Was he ever going to come back? It scared you to not know.
At least he hadn’t left you alone.
You had told his sister about it when you called her to ask where Valko might be. After all, you had to tell someone about the plus-pink sign on the pregnancy test, didn’t you?
