Douglas was born in Brixton. His father was in the army so they moved around the whole country every couple years or so. He lived in Manchester, Edinburgh, Yorkshire, and Liverpool. His father died in action when Douglas was twenty. By this time, Douglas was living on his own. He was a bit of a recluse, preferring to be by himself. Honestly, after moving around so much, Douglas had never really been in one place long enough to put down any roots or make a solid group of friends. He didn’t mind so much, though sometimes it got a little lonely, but he figured that was a common enough feeling. Douglas did odd jobs to get by, plumbing, construction. Then he got into bounty hunting. Douglas was good at his job and finally kind of felt like he belonged somewhere a little more.
He drifted through the days until he was approached by the Hale family. Well, the parents. He was told that his services were needed but at first he wasn’t too sure. The Hale family had a bit of a shady reputation in his circles and it just didn’t seem like a good idea at all. But eventually they convinced him with money and it seemed like an easy enough job - track down a girl in Baberton and get as much intel on her as he possibly could and report it back. Simple. Until they changed the rules on him when he got there and blackmailed him with a secret of his own to keep him under their thumb. Douglas feels fairly trapped and he hates being screwed with.
Now in Baberton, he feels unable to really get out but he’s doing what he can to come up with a plan - and in the meantime just keep getting intel on the girl he was sent to spy on - Emma Williamson. Apparently Emma has confessed to killing the Hale’s son Duncan, which they told Douglas was an insane lie in the beginning, but now they’ve admitted that Duncan has indeed not come home. Their last contact with him was sometime after Halloween and he sounded scattered, a mindset his father knew all too well apparently. Duncan seemed to have a habit of stalking and murder - which his father cleaned up every time. This time he wasn’t quick enough and what he did resulted in a pregnancy for Emma Williamson.
Since getting here, he’s heard a rumour that Emma thinks the Hale’s could want to take the babies away from her - the truth is far darker and Douglas isn’t entirely sure how he’s going to find a way around it, in all honesty. He tries to live a normal life while he’s stuck here but it seems like time just keeps on running out.
The Hale family actually want him to get Emma Williamson alone… and kill her and the babies. Or just the babies would do. They want no proof to exist about Duncan’s attack on Emma and those babies are the biggest proof that they don’t want to exist. They want to keep the Hale name clean and clear and act like Duncan is just off travelling for some work or something.
Douglas defended himself against a man back in Yorkshire. He was in his house for a plumbing job when the man suddenly attacked him out of nowhere, with a knife in hand. Douglas was stronger than the guy expected and he managed to overpower him. However, it resulted in the man’s death. Douglas fled the house, never called the police, and didn’t look back. The investigation went cold and no one knew he was there. This is what the Hale’s found out and are using to blackmail him - if they find out he was there now, all these years later, there’s no defence. He ran away like a murderer, they’d never believe his story.
