4/21/16: Barney’s New York paid tribute to Prince by reminiscing about the time he “appeared” in a Simon Doonan-created Barney’s Christmas window in 1992:
One of the most creative musical minds of our times—to say nothing of a lifelong style risk-taker—Prince passed away at the age of 57, leaving the world shortchanged of potentially decades more of his music. Today, we remember him fondly and mourn the loss by turning a nostalgic eye to when he appeared life-sized in a Simon Doonan-created Barneys Christmas window in 1992.
“Prince loaned us tons of his clothes and minute disco boots for his window,” Doonan recounts in his book, Confessions of a Window Dresser. “He was made from a petite female mannequin.”
Upon hearing of his passing, Doonan further recounting the experience of working with the legendary performer. “Everyone told us it was so hard to get to Prince, and that he was very private.,” he recalled. “I found the complete opposite—he and his people were enthusiastic collaborators on our project. They sent boxes of clothes and various ideas. Our Prince window was by far most popular holiday window of 1992.Of course, we had to send back all the clothes, which was a drag because he and I were the same size. What a magnificent talent. Very sad.”
Prince’s eccentric sense of style will be missed nearly as much as his music, but we join the world today in remembering this brilliant creatively talent and in mourning his passing.
"I would describe him as quietly reserved, extremely intelligent, and very polite. He was a perfectionist with his craft, I have nothing but respect for him. He used to make notes of every show, and after every show I’d have the front-of-house-guy burn the DVD with the audio and video. He would run to the bus, they’d set up his food, and I would plug in the DVD, have it set up, and push pause, so all he would have to do is press play. He would not leave until he watched the video of his performance, or at least parts of it, he would fast-forward to specific parts. And he would make notes and changes. From Show One until the very last show, it was amazing to watch how deeply he was into his craft and delivering a show to the audience. His quest for perfection was superior to anybody else I’ve ever seen." (Neville Shende - Prince's tour bus driver for the Musicology run, to Billboard magazine, 2016)
Alan Leeds: That’s the Prince I choose to remember. He knew how I adored Miles and his music. The nicest things he did for people were usually the quietest – he was very shy when confronted with emotional gratitude from those he cared about. When the LOVESEXY European tour schedule conflicted with my son Tristan’s annual Summer visit, Prince suggested that we bring the 14 year old on tour with us. Can you imagine a back-to-school “show and tell” where students tell the class how they spent their summers? “I toured European stadiums with Prince.” Yeah, right, Tristan. Sure you did. I think he had to bring his class the tour book with his Dad’s name to prove he wasn’t tripping. Then there was an expensive designer sweater that Prince once wore to an event while we were in Nice, France, shooting Under The Cherry Moon. [My wife] Gwen fell in love with it and complimented Prince. A few days later we were on set and Prince pulled Gwen aside and sent her on errand. “Go to my villa and look on the dresser for a box.” Thinking she was fetching something he needed Gwen did as instructed. What she found was the sweater, nicely wrapped with her name on the box. Then, in 1990 I had a medical issue that required surgery and a month or two of treatments. Basically two months away from work. There were no pesty, anxious “how’s he doin’” calls day after day. BUT there were full paychecks every Friday and NEVER a call asking, “when can he come back to work?” THAT is the Prince I remember.”

Minus the shirt. #Prince
‘The announcement coincides with the upcoming weeklong festivities at “Prince: A Celebration,” set to kick off on Prince’s forty-second birthday. From June 7 through June 13, the gates of Prince’s famed studio Paisley Park will be open to the public for tours and nightly parties. The week will culminate with a performance by Prince and assorted friends at the Northrop Auditorium in Minneapolis on June 13. “It’s not going to be a concert, per se,” said Prince. “More like a jam session.”
#Prince comes in at #10 on this list of legacy artists' & and their most recent earnings. Most intetesting is the number: "Prince continues to sell with records showing a steady, robust 320,000 physical units and half a billion on-demand streams. The last year saw a 12% increase in his streams." Read more: https://www.tuko.co.ke/353171-top-earning-dead-celebs-time.html

Think I’m gonna pick my favorite Prince outfits/style choices. Have some definite faves. It's not purple, but this is my favorite Purple Rain-era outfit: that collage of iridescent colors, that long elegant coat that's weighted just right, the lining, the tight pants with that ruched, tapered leg. Even the shoulder pads work and contribute to his presence on stage. He's a sight to behold. I mean who could look away? Worn for the American Music Awards, 1985.
#Prince pix. Ever wonder if P started wearing those uber high-waisted pants cuz he was tired of pulling up those loooow hip huggers he wore thru much of the 80’s… ?
The world would never be the same - from 1976:
Read Prince’s first interview, in his high school newspaper
What follows is a transcript of Prince’s very first interview. It appeared in his high school newspaper on February 16, 1976, accompanied by a picture of a young afro-clad Prince sitting at a piano.
Nelson Finds It “Hard To Become Known”
“I play with Grand Central Corporation. I’ve been playing with them for two years,” Prince Nelson, senior at Central, said. Prince started playing piano at age seven and guitar when he got out of eighth grade.
Prince was born in Minneapolis. When asked, he said, “I was born here, unfortunately.” Why? “I think it is very hard for a band to make it in this state, even if they’re good. Mainly because there aren’t any big record companies or studios in this state. I really feel that if we would have lived in Los Angeles or New York or some other big city, we would have gotten over by now.”
He likes Central a great deal, because his music teachers let him work on his own. He now is working with Mr. Bickham, a music teacher at Central, but has been working with Mrs. Doepkes.
He plays several instruments, such as guitar, bass, all keyboards, and drums. He also sings sometimes, which he picked up recently. He played saxophone in seventh grade but gave it up. He regrets he did. He quit playing sax when school ended one summer. He never had time to practice sax anymore when he went back to school. He does not play in the school band. Why? “I really don’t have time to make the concerts.”
Prince has a brother that goes to Central whose name is Duane Nelson, who is more athletically enthusiastic. He plays on the basketball team and played on the football team. Duane is also a senior.
Prince plays by ear. “I’ve had about two lessons, but they didn’t help much. I think you’ll always be able to do what your ear tells you, so just think how great you’d be with lessons also,” he said.
“I advise anyone who wants to learn guitar to get a teacher unless they are very musically inclined. One should learn all their scales too. That is very important,” he continued.
Prince would also like to say that his band is in the process of recording an album containing songs they have composed. It should be released during the early part of the summer.
“Eventually I would like to go to college and start lessons again when I’m much older.”
And when this man passed 40 years later, the whole world stopped to grieve and pay homage.
Now THAT is a legacy.
A remembrance I put together in 2018...#RIPPrince #Prince4Ever
