is dorktoes ending? ;-;
I'm afraid it is, yeah. It's taking me way longer than I thought it would and it's way harder than I expected, but yes. Dork Toes will be finished soon.
This afternoon at Mekanik Strip in Antwerp! Come over and have us sign our graphic novel De Walvis, and get a limited edition print out of the deal!
Draw the hands of a lone mountain man/woman, hands that have seen hard labour and harsh weather. Alternatively, draw the hands of a person with any specific profession.
What are these hands doing? What detail do they have that set them apart as a character?
I took my landlord's dog on a walk today and we passed a girl who had the tiniest rooster ever with her - she picked him up as we walked by, probably to make sure the dog wouldn't go after him (she didn't try, thankfully) and the rooster was totally fine with being picked up and held! I also met a pitbull named Shadow with super squishy cheeks.
Aw. Hey. I’m very pleased with this information. I hope your good beastly fortune brings me, in turn, a tiny rooster in the future.

Hey. So. There was this thing about Tumblr, I dunno, it didn’t get a lot of attention and you might have missed it. In any case, I haven’t really kept my tumblr updated and when I did, it didn’t get a lot of traction anymore. I’m not planning on deleting my blog here, but if you wanna keep up with a more recent drawing-y place I frequent, go look for me under Hanne_Dewachter on instagram.
I heard all the cool kids have it.
Animation, check
Our 4 animators worked hard for about 2 months in total. It went well, we even finished a bit ahead of schedule. A small miracle. :) I am extremely happy with the results. The crew did a stellar job.
This is the first big classical 2D project that I direct. I really enjoyed the organic character of the hand drawn animation. A first rough pass of a shot already has so much life in it, compared to 3D animation where everything feels much more stale at the start. With the first sketchy animation passes that the animators were making across the whole film, it really felt like we were gradually molding the characters. Step by step Stefaan and Liesbeth became more and more themselves.
These are the best moments for me when I make my shorts. Animation is by far my favorite phase. You have been developing the story, the characters and the designs for several years, mostly by yourself. Struggling, doubting yourself, persisting. And then it all starts happening. The joy of seeing the characters that up until then existed only in your head come to life is such a rush. And to be able to do this with a group of passionate, eager and incredibly talented friends is just plain amazing. When things click and these moments happen, I’m just in awe and thankful to experience this.
I would like to put the spotlight on our animators for a moment.
I could write a whole plea about why being an animator is a tough and underrated job. About how you need to be incredibly skilled and talented just to find a job in the business, and stay in it. About how they endlessly need to find new jobs after every production. About how they need to reinvent themselves every time they work on a new film, in a new style, in new software, in a new studio, with new people, with new challenges. These people are legit artists. Most people outside the business don’t realize how demanding this job is. But let’s skip that.
The point is, they are here. Doing their thing. Doing it well. Travelling all over the country to work on films. And I had the pleasure to have these 4 people bring Stefaan and Liesbeth to life for me. They are the actors of my film. We talked endlessly about where a certain character would place his hand and in what manner. How Liesbeth her eyes would shift, what the shape of her eyebrows would be, before and after. How many times a character would blink. A fast blink, or a slow blink? Or maybe a fast one directly followed by a slow one? How exactly Stefaan his hair would blow in the wind and what impact it would have on the shot. And they have to do it all in the style of the film. This is no small feat.
I’m so happy with the animation team we had for Panta Rhei. I’m so proud of all your work. You guys are sick.
So without any further ado, a big shout-out to Hanne Dewachter, Olivier Vanden Bussche, David Bols and Sarah Menheere! Go check their work.Â

This week’s comic: JELLYBEANSSSZZZZ.
.. who DOES that
This week’s comic: Shmovienight – or: how I beat up my inner Pun Demon.
Ha ha.. ahhhh. Why.
Here is one of my coping mechanisms when it’s 35°C outside.
Both to focus on my work and to somehow feel like it’s cooler outside, I tend to listen to the sound of rain. If you want to share the full experience:
Rain on a tent on full volume: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3a4jA0jfrk&t=18567s Thunder Rumble without rain at half volume: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wz5Pyn7Nsc&t=17755s One of these series alongside it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyNYkWKHf1Q
And now we can be listenbuddies! And feel like we’re in our own little cocoon. And cool the hell down.

This week's comic: Blow My Mind! About the intimate networks of plants.. and other mind-blowyness. Perhaps?
Here's an answer to the question I often get from people: "So, what are you up to these days?"
Presenting: an excerpt of 'The Whale', an 80-page Graphic Novel in color, coming in 2019. A story about struggle, bravery and.. a whale. Really? Really. Well, you'll see.
Script written by Frederik Hautain, drawings by me, and wonderful coloring done by Gerardo Alba; keep your eyes open for future updates. I also want to thank everyone that sent in their work when we were looking for a colorist! The decision wasn't easy, and we're very happy with the outcome.
Santé! Hanne

Make a pose in the mirror. Try to memorize it and draw what you remember. Bonus if it's a gesture drawing.

A slug that constantly and relentlessly, but very slowly, chases you like the monster from ‘It Follows.’ If it touches you, nothing happens.

Draw a character but in a post-apocalyptic setting. Change or draw their clothing accordingly.
Soo.. Does anyone else know this character outside of the whole of Flanders?
No seriously, does anyone?
A patterned rug partially covering an uneven floor. Or a poster/patterned wallpaper on an uneven wall.
Don’t know if people do that, reblogging the prompt with their drawing, but here we are.
Was tired of the bricks about a quarter into the wall but it got fun pretty fast after that.
