The surface is off-limits.
No matter what kind of pipe dream you're trying to chase, what manic imagination lured you into believing it's better than the underground shit-hole you grew up in—you'll die there.
They'll kill you. They hate your kind. That's why you're down here in the first place. Don't forget it. Stop trying to look for an exit that doesn't exist.
You are what's known among your people as a seer. Born with the ability to hear the wailing of ancient souls, you move about the underground with your friend, your partner, and your soul-bound to banish them.
If you don't answer their call, you'll end up just like them. Angry, despaired, and clinging to things long past. Your sanity, for one.
People like you are fickle. Your soul has been whisked away into the beyond before. It's a miracle you're alive. People like you are rare. Sacred. Needed to keep your home safe.
So what's going to happen if one day, the call comes from beyond the walls you know? A home with no apparent exit? If you make it outside, will you survive?
Will people try to kill you like they did with your ancestors? Will you manage to soothe the spirit that called to you, or will you go insane while trying?
Or perhaps, will it lead you through an elaborate court full of intrigue and betrayal, where you are forced to pretend to be someone you couldn't be any more different from?
Someone who left behind a murky legacy in their death. One that you're now tasked with solving.
Your closest confidante, and an easily irritable man. Growing up, Páv has always been gifted when it comes to magic. He's a lot stronger than you in that regard.
Thankfully, your close bond allows you to dip into his arcane reservoirs, so that you're not just standing off to the side when combating vengeful spirits.
He'd like it if you were more cautious with it, though. Killjoy.
— He/Him - Bisexual - Introduced in Ch. 1 —
Future ruler of Chánjuān—Land of light.
They have an easy-going attitude about... Anything of importance, really. To a worrying degree. You don't know why they're so respected among court with an attitude like that.
It doesn't help that they refuse to personally debrief you about the wild goose chase they've sent you on.
— They/them - Bisexual - Introduced in Ch. 3 —
Right hand advisor of the sovereign.
A medium—just like you, he claims—and aspiring court mage, who specialises in fortune telling and being the most vain person in the room at all times.
He's charming, flirtatious, and frankly a little intimidating with his quick wits and forked silver tongue.
— He/him - Bisexual - Introduced in Ch. 3 —
You didn't expect a guard to be so easy with her smiles, nor so generous with her attention. Not just with you—with anyone.
She's tall, broad-shouldered, and unmistakably capable. At times, she seems like your only ally who's sound of mind. And her loyalty runs deep.
Maybe a little too deep.
— She/her - Lesbian - Introduced in Ch. 4 —
A noble whose electric-blue gaze seems to pierce right through you. As if seeing beyond that puny façade you're desperately trying to keep up.
He doesn't have the time nor the nerve to fool around, and he makes this very clear at all times. Assertive as they come. Not just matching, but surpassing Páv's caustic streak.
That resolve seems to falter a little around his fellow mage and royal advisor, though.
— He/him - Bisexual - Introduced in Ch. 4 —
You know her so very well, don't you?
You better act like you do, and act good, you hear?
Good luck.
— She/her - Bisexual - Introduced in Ch. 5 —

as a straight lady, I am blessed with choices lol. But anywho.
Will there be more jealousy moments in the future? Regardless from Pav or the other ROs. I love playing an MC who likes to tease/ banter and even flirt with lotsa people lol so I wonder if that'll affect the way other perceive me? Will I be able to flirt with non-ROs too? Just some sweet banter and then Pav giving them the stink eye in the back lmao (Duck is probably mocking/ being snide, like 'oh look, she found someone better')
On a related note, how would rank the ROs jealousy? From most to least
Ahh, that reminds me. Duck seems to care great deal about us. So I wonder if she'll also have moments if feeling jealous/ being inadequate/ abandon?
Oh and since our cast are going to emerge from the ground—I'm assuming magic or something right?—I've laughing at the mental image that from those already above, it looks like MC is pulling themselves outta the ground, full zombie style
Bonus: I remember there was a period where 'mole people' were being spread around. I wonder if someone will call the trio that lol
— 🐈 Anon (I was the one who gave the Pav jelly ask before)
Yes to more jealousy moments in the future! Yes to flirting affecting how others might see you, and yes again to flirting with certain Non-ROs! 😊
All of the ROs exhibit their jealousy in very different ways, so I think my ranking would change a little depending on the circumstances, but for now it goes like this:
Severed is first, since she can get extremely possessive. If you say you're hers, why would you ogle anybody else? You don't need those eyes to love her, you know...
-
The Mage would cover up all that brewing jealousy with pretty words, but he's not beyond pettiness, and also not beyond taking that pettiness too far.
Yes, the spirits told him to knock over that candle. Yes, the candle that set the noble's dress on fire. The noble whose kiss lingered a little too long on the back of your palm in greeting, yes.
It's fine, they managed to put it out quickly. What's the big deal? That dress was atrocious, anyway. He did them a favour, honestly.
-
Páv takes third place. He mostly tries to bottle up his jealousy, with varying levels of success. He'd never harm anyone but himself over those feelings, though.
-
The Aristocrat doesn't get jealous over just anyone. If it were a random noble flirting with you, he'd merely roll his eyes at the attempt. Maybe he'd sit back and snicker as he sips on a drink, even.
He's not worried. He knows he's better. However, there's a handful of people in the world that would make him absolutely shatter the occasional wine glass in his grip as he tries to bite back his anger.
-
The Guard doesn't have much experience when it comes to romance, including the jealousy that might come with it. She's great friends with the court mage, and he always lays it on thick. That's just normal around here, right?
And it's not normal to feel so disappointed when she sees it happening to you, right...?
-
Virgo doesn't care about harmless flirting. They'd rather you do it with them, but they don't exactly feel jealous about it.
They've grown pretty apathetic to hearing and seeing people kiss up to each other all the time.
I'm halfway done with chapter 2! And since we also reached 250 followers, I thought to celebrate it by revealing the 2nd RO you'll meet in the story - Virgo! 💙

i really liked your IF/demo and am excited how the story continues.
i have a few questions:
could you give an explanation/interpretation of the personality stats? (specifically the malicious-merciful stat)?
would you maybe consider adding a marker for romatic/flirt options? i dont know if there are any in the current demo yet, but i had quite a few choices, where i wasnt sure if they were romantic/flirt options.
ive noticed relatively in the beginning, where Páv gets scratched by Kapka and MC can choose between "asking if everythings fine" and "grin", that the first one increases the merciful-stat and Páv´s relationship-stat, but the second option only increases the malicious-stat.
that make me wonder if (A) does every RO has a/multiple prefered personalities in an MC? and (B) would this mean that if an MC has the ""wrong"" personality, then the romance would progress slower/be harder/MC would be locked out of it?
so at some point MC has to assume the identiy of an male character. how long would this be the case? would it be most of the story (e.g. ch.1-3 "original MC"/ch.4-end "assumed identity") or would it be more like a single story arc (e.g. ch.1-3 "original MC"/ch.4-6 "assumed identity"/ch.7-end "original MC")?
thank you for your answers.
Hi! Thank you for reading, I'm glad you enjoyed it so far. 💜
1.)
I'm still largely workshopping and playing around with the personality stats, so they're all subject to change! I most likely will keep the malicious stat in some way though, since you can really push being an asshole come later chapters.
As of now, the stat mostly affects your treatment towards the spirits (i.e gaining points for cursing them, or laughing about Páv destroying the wanderer's soul in one of the divergent paths for it), as well some other options that could be considered being mean!
2.)
Yes, I will add a little heart symbol for romantic options! I've looked through Ch. 1 again, and have only found one option that is meant to be outright romantic in nature, so I'll add it there, as well.
Any other teasing choice so far is more up to interpretation on whether it's actually flirting or not, I'd say (though I do admittedly struggle with tone sometimes as well...) I wanted to track the amount of times you flirt with characters anyway, so they can initiate 'the talk' with MC later if you don't do so first, and I think a marker would be helpful for me, too!
3.)
Páv appreciates MC showing their concern for him in that moment, so it raises his relationship stat. I was initially going to take off a point or two for laughing at him instead, since it'd make sense, right? You're essentially finding joy in his pain, who'd be okay with that?
But doing so just doesn't affect him the same way as i.e outright telling him that you don't need him being protective of you. Now, that's a pretty big hit if you're convinced that's your whole purpose. ദ്ദി ( ᵔ ᗜ ᵔ )
That being said, characters do prefer certain personalities. The guard will dislike if you're being cruel, but she'd assume it comes down to your MC playing a role. On the other hand, The Severed will enjoy and even encourage MC being cruel. The Mage will looove you sucking up to him and inflating his ego.
I would never lock you out of a route for not doing or saying what the characters want to hear or see you do, though. Where's the fun in that? Moreover, how would that help certain characters develop?
Sure, telling Páv you don't need his protection will have you take a hit to his relationship stat now, but it might even help in the long-term, depending on how you handle it.
4.)
It will be an entire arc! I have it only roughly outlined for now, so I can't say for sure how many chapters it'll end up spanning across yet.
There will be a big event where everything goes to shit, to put it simply. And there will be more chapters following said event with MC and company's ruse being unmasked! :)
Considering Severed is the only option for a straight dude...
My MC will face his fears no matter how scared he should be or not. Here's hoping she treats guys less scarily than gals and not the other way around...
I'm sure you'll manage to charm her, even if you'll have it a lot harder, anon! :'D
Whats the technology level and/or theme? (Aka like fantasy medieval, steampunk, sort of magick tech parallel to real life- like 'mirror phones' etc) and on the same note, whats the fashion like?
It's a healthy mix of everything you mentioned, I'd say! It's technically more renaissance/baroque than medieval, though.
There's an overarching plot point that determines whether or not people rely more on magic or machinations (It gets explored a lot more in another story I'm working on, though certain things that will occur in doppelgaenger are greatly dependent on it)!
As for fashion:
For the underground, clothes are generally dark/simple and warm but non-restrictive! Embroidered protection runes on the fabric are also common. Lots of it is handed down, or flicked together, so you'll often see mismatched boots or patched up cloaks to the point they nowhere resemble the original product.
And for the surface, you'll just have to wait and see. :)

I love how jelly Pav can be, regardless if it's due to a crush or just because MC is their best friend (and/ or platonic soulmate lol)
Anywho, how would Duck react if MC ever confesses that they like one of the ROs? Like they have a lil talk and MC admits they like RO
I can imagine if it was Pav, Duck will prob be like 'him? Really? Of all the beings in existence, you chose him'
Now for a more lore ask, ngl it kinda confused me a bit so where is the MC and current company located? Are they like underground? In a different realm?
You already pretty much nailed it for Páv, lol! Duck would just add that 'she'd seen this shit coming from miles away, but it still bit her in the arse, since she prayed it WOULDN'T. Guess there's no Gods listening to her, huh?'
As for the others:
Sovereign: They're like rich-rich, ain't they? Should throw her a coin or two once you're sittin' on that d-- throne. Don't forget who's got you up there!
Mage: Various noises of dry heaving fill the room. Then a pause. She holds up a finger, taking a deep breath. Only for more dry heaving to ensue.
Guard: She'd wolf whistle and wiggle her brows. This one's approved, it seems.
Aristocrat: Honestly? She sees it. He's funnier than the hag, if anything.
Severed: You're into some freak shit. Respect.
And yes, MC and Páv are currently literally underground. You will be on the surface come chapter 3! 💜

do you have any references for what Páv's voice sound like btw? 👁 also does he and the MC have any particular accents or is Duck just the most special girl in the world
My personal voice claim for Páv would be Moros from Hades 2! I do believe him and MC have a distinct accent to most people on the surface, but Duck purposely has taught herself to cover hers up.
Can I ask what's the age range for the MC + the ROs? Also Duck too I'm attached to her already <3
Duck is around 19-20, and at least a little bit younger than MC.
MC is 20 at minimum, and 26 max.
Páv is 3 years older than MC, and in his 20s, so 23-29.
Sovereign is early 20s.
Both the mage and aristocrat are in their early 30s.
The guard is in her mid 20s.
And the severed looks around middle-aged. :)
