I think Friend's appearances as 2 eyes and (often but not always) a smile is inspired by cats' reflective eyes.

My black cat literally looks like Friend (minus the pink eye) in the dark.

I think this means that Friend is a shapeshifter.

Like black cats in darkness, they can look like practically everything. Everything in the dark world is darkness, so Friend's powers are limitless.

In the game layer, deals massive damage to the party if observed

They seem to be evolving every chapter as we draw nearer to the story’s end. We’ve gotten to the point where Friend’s able to interact with our heroes. What’s next?

This along with recent in-fandom revelation that Friend is changing environments to guide our choices all but confirms DEVICE theory to me. I think Friend has a large role in influencing our heroes.

Furthermore, I personally believe that the weird route skip to Chapter 7 is going to be some fuck-ass meta shit, and that Kris and Noelle have no-clipped into The Depths. I do believe it’s possible for dear ol’ Friend to be playing a role in this given their boundary defying capabilities.

So, I suppose the point I’m trying to make is: Friend is getting closer, physically closer to our heroes, and the closer they are the stronger they get
