2020 Oct Yala
After Covid-19 pandemic, this was the 1st time we went out, after very long time. It was really hot and humid and the painted storks were building nests. We encountered a leopard cub learning hunting. But the deer was not afraid and they ran away. the cub sat for a long time dejected. Same day afternoon we encountered âdigan-vila leopard. He saw us and showed that he was ready to walk-away.âŚ

We; âKele Groupâ had conducted yet another successful trip to Wilpattu National Park [hereafter WNP]. The group was housed at âMarandamaduwaâ circuit bungalow from 27th February to 2nd March, 2020.
Visitors could see the Villus were full of water as water levels were very close to jungle patches. Heat was not a problem as upper level tree branches cover roads from direct sun rays.
There were several new comers with three young âfellasâ from same Collage. Roshan and wife from Galle was invited by Lakshman and âKultaâ [Kularathne] and his sister-in-law was invited by Salinda. Mohan and his son Gaveen and Savindra was invited by yours truly, and where, Savi is son of yours truly. Malith invited his beloved Anuja and their son Rasindu. Kithsiri of water board fame was invited by . Asela who was an old member but did not tour with us for some time , was invited by Salinda.
Later, Rasindu did some antics and driven to instant popularity but I will keep the details for future.
One could see a juvenile sambur had taken refuge at Maradanmadu bungalow with two ârilavasâ. Sambur was adorable at first and everybody started taking âphone photosâ and selfies but soon the bungalow staff [Amila] informed that it was a nuisance and seeking food. That warning was later confirmed when sambur broke one or two glasses on table reaching for half eaten sandwich. Rilavas were prepared to put more dangerous acts and instantly they declared war with human intruders. As I can remember it was innocent Malith who was checking his sleeping chambers [for next three nights] came under sudden attack by two rilava terrorists. The duo came top of hand rail and was ready to enter the same sleeping chamber with Malith. When Malith challenged the terrorist duo, they became aggressive. Fortunately, by this time noises reached downstairs and handful of âKGâ rear guard advanced to trouble spot with couple of brooms and animal intruders were chased away.
these crocs fear sambur, whenever crocs see sambur coming to lake, they run
But the story did not finish at this point. The same terrorist duo attacked our breakfast table in the following morning with lightning speed. Nobody, including more experienced Amila the bungalow keeper envisaged this attack. In a single file, both terrorists entered restaurant. Seeing this all most all visitors frozen with fear and three young bucks from City Collage [who had seen all Terminator, Rambo and Autobot movies] ran for cover. Two rilvas grabbed several slizes of bread [some say 4 slizes each and some 5] from main breakfast table and ran off.
First day afternoon trip was yet another sleepy affair. We were instructed not to drink water but cool beer due to âcovid-9â virus and after heavy lunch most of us were sleepy. We saw some eagles, dear and some land monitors. One of our heroes to be; Rasindu was probably feeling bored started picking leaves and keeping his hands [mainly right hand] outside of moving, open jeep. Two or three persons warned him against this dangerous practice but all notices were ignored. There was a single cracking sound and several people heard this including vigilant driver. Rasindu gave sharp cry and started crying holding his hand. Vehicle was stopped and subsequently got front vehicle to stop too. Asela who is a practitioner of one of noblest profession in the world came in to the rescue of the child. He felt that there is a deformity in straight bone, just before wrist and did first aid made a sling to keep hand still. Later Rasinduâs parents were informed as they were in the leading vehicle. All proceeded to the bungalow and one jeep went out of WNP with tracker, Asela, Rasindu and his parents. Later we got to know that the party went to Anuradapura base hospital and saw an orthopedic surgeon and the deformity corrected and a plaster was done to stabilize hand. It was close to midnight when they arrive at last.
We come back to the story where all came to the bungalow, again and start from there. After usual bathing and adorning colorful dresses rest of the party gathered for first dinner.
It was Savindraâs 14th bâday and surprised party and cake was organized by Salinda, Malkanthi and Savindraâs father; yours truly. As a friend, only Gaveen could attend the party sans Rasindu.
Second day; 28th February, 2020, we found that the accident party returned last night and everybody wanted to know details. As usual Salinda arranged new comers to visit âKudiramalei Pointâ and two vehicles went on that trip. One vehicle went on a usual morning excursion with Asela, Sarath Athuruliya, Sarath Guruge, Kithsiri and yours truly. People who went were mainly shutterbugs with SLR cameras and some with fairly long lenses.
As I can remember Malith waited at bungalow and Anuja went to Kudiramale on one of the vehicles. Following are some of the eaglesâ images by yours truly.

Wildlife Tour to Kavudulla National Park
To witness world famous âgatheringâ [& lost opportunity]
Kavudulla National Park [KNP] is situated in Polonnaruwa District and in North Central Province. One can reach KNP by turning right at Hatares-kotuva on Colombo-Habarana-Trincomalee main road, passing Gal-Oya junction Railway Station. This is where the railway line diversion take place by one line goes to Trincomalee via Kanthale and the other goes to Batticaloa via Kaduruwela [polonnaruwa].
KNP is 220.km away from Colombo and dominated by Kavudulla tank [weva]. The tank is surrounded by floodplains, forest and wooded hills extended eastward. From November to March the tank usually fills up with âNortheast Monsoonsâ and excess water from Minneriya tank. In the following months water releases through draw down for cultivation and feeds Kanthale tank. KNP was declared National Park status in 1998 just few months after Minneriya was declared as a National Park.
Some of the tuskers lensed by our Snr photographer Mr. Gerry Nanayakkara. [enjoy these magnificent giants on slideshow mode. pl âclickâ on images for large screen] Shot on previous wildlife tours.

Wild animals in the area, especially elephants [eplephas maximus] are largely benefitted by abundance of water in the reservoir and lush grasslands around it for their day-to-day consumption. KNP and itâs surroundings plays a vital role as a feeding grounds for many fauna and flora.
Month of August is the best to witness world famous âgatheringâ, either at Minneriya National Park or at KNP; wild elephant herds migrating to and from Wasgamuwa N.P. to either Minneriya N.P. or to KNP or as far as Somawathiya N.P. A single elephant need 200-250.kg of vegetation and 60-70 Ltrs of water per day.
We stopped in Inamaluwa [near Sigiriya turn point] and got in to a small bus which took us to âGovipala Cottagesâ for lunch. It is owned by Mr. Brandi-gampola [surname] but we call him simply âBrandyâ [not Ranjanâs brandy]. We had a âquick-beer-thirst-quencherâ with âwev maluâ[tank fish] for bite and lunch after. They were to supply dinner to us on our way back.
We were good two hours late on schedule when we reached the park. There was one kilometer traffic jam before park entrance. Our entrance tickets had been purchased but reaching the entrance was a problem due to excessive number of Jeeps been queued along narrow road.
As soon as we entered the park, we saw a giant tusker walking along bund of the tank and unmistakably it was going for afternoon water dip. The bull was well built and could have been 30-40yrs of age. Tusks were nicely curved and well grown. Jeep drivers were in mighty hurry to take us further down to see elephants and they wanted to beat incoming rain too. Otherwise we could have waited and let it cross the bund and go to other side toward tank. Since the bull was not coming into clearance and was covering itself from possession of Jeeps, we could not photograph clearly. But everybody took some kind of shots of it.
Due to a freak storm with heavy downpour, lightning and gusts of winds, our hopes of witnessing this spectacular phenomena was vanished. All the âKele Groupâ members and invited guests were disappointed in the afternoon as elephants got scared and took flight toward forest for cover. Floodplains started turning into muddy pools and wind threatening constantly by making canvass hoods of six jeeps flying at every angle exposing everybody including children to raging rains.
Thunder and lightning was so frightening, our contact and Jeep driver Kumara later told us that literally elephants started to run for safety with tails twisted and erected at their backs. Our Jeep driver âGaminiâ said that this was the first time in his life [for the last eight years] returned after a safari drive without seeing an elephant.
This was the first time âKGâ group organized such a large group consisting 35 adults and 5 children and two year old âRanviâ. It was a good experience managing every aspect of the tour other than [very crucial] timing factor. Everybody realized that we were approximately two hours behind our original schedule.
But as soon as we got in to our bus everybody was ok and in merry mood. Everybody was relaxed after stop at Dambulla P&S and soon spirits started flowing and singing started.
Though rain disappointed every spectator came from Colombo, it surely a blessing for villagers and animals not only in Kavudulla area but for whole North and North Central Provinces itself.

Sri Lankan ancient rituals & traditional dancing
Gini madu [ same as Gam madu or devol madu ] is a ritual performed by traditional Low country dancers in Sri Lanka. Madu [ or Maduwa ] is a place where these dancers praise Goddess Paththini to shower peace and prosperity to all countrymen. Moreover organizers and spectators believe that evil would be crushed and all hearts would be filled with good deeds. Dance schedule is called 'pelapaliya' and it is  a list of dances. Some dancers wear traditional Sri Lankan masks made out of low weight wood and others wear elegant & bright dancing costumes. Yak bera [ devil's drum ] is a part of low country dancing form and a definite inclusion in a ritual like 'Madu'. Usually 'maduwa' is organized by a leading 'kapu mahattaya' or shaman of a Paththini shrine and sponsored by a prominent person or an organization in the area. 'Maduwa' as a low country ritual and 'Kohomba kankariya' as an Up-country event has lot of similarities. On 14th August 2016 a Gini Madu Shanthikarmaya was performed at Batuwatta Temple, Ragama, Sri Lanka. It started around 7.00pm and lasted till following day morning. C
