Thanks to Preservation Magazine and photo editor Michael Green for the opportunity to make pictures of the historic Union Block building in Mount Pleasant, Iowa — where Arabella B. Mansfield became the first woman in America to pass the bar exam in 1869.

My wife and I moved to Iowa more than three years ago with the idea of covering and participating in the Iowa Caucuses for the 2016 presidential election. I spent last night with my wonderful neighbors participating in the messy and beautiful electoral process, which felt more 18th Century than 21st Century. What a fun night.

This was an interesting project for Storey Publishing, which we shot over a few days in 2014 during the Iowa State Fair. Have you ever seen a 1000-pound pumpkin? Apparently, they blow up sometimes. Outtakes to come.

Earlier this year, the talented design crew at the Franklin Institute Science Center in Philly recently revamped their sports exhibit. They asked me last Feb. to help create some images that would illustrate and decorate a couple of the interactive exhibits. Working with the talented digital artist Taisya Kuzmenko, a great crew and very patient models (including Little League pitching phenom Mo’ne Davis), we created some pretty cool images. They look fantastic in place (much thanks to Colin Lenton for the images) — can’t wait to see them in person. Thanks to @Lauren Smedley for the support and guidance through the whole thing and to @ryancollerd and @davidohl for the assistance work.
