Hi I’m Dominic. I studied history at UC Santa Cruz and after college I became a working stiff and was fed up with reading statistics that said you can’t do shit with a bachelor of arts. I flew to Germany in the fall of 2012 and worked on farms for a year. My goal was to become a subsistence farmer, or at least find out if I could actually hang with people who were. WIth planes, trains and automobiles I saw the hell out of this country and several others. For one year I farmed, cared for animals and gained vast amounts of practical experience. I didn’t earn a red cent. I settled down and moved into a community of adults in Thüringen, a part of the former German Democratic Republik which is near the cities Weimar, Jena and Erfurt. I worked in the garden and became a fixture in an area where some people have never met a real life American. This website has been one of the only methods of sharing my time with others. I have no cellphone or landline or personal computer. I don’t watch television. Email is used exclusively for business here in Germany, with the consulate general in San Francisco or with family. I regret not showing more, but when you produce 70 percent of your own food you don’t have time to spend hours in front of a screen. I originally set out to spend 9 months here and it has been 3 years since I left. I have a career, a studio, friends and a life that I built 9000 kilometers from everything that left me dissatisfied. This is all because I packed my backpack and got on a plane. Thanks for looking
