RULES.
honestly, just be chill. mutuals only, don't reblog threads you aren't apart of, no personal blogs, and tag triggering content. don't involve me in your drama either. i'm here to write as a fun hobby. i'm over the age of 21, so no minors either. more rules will be added if needed. i write doleful with the idea he is meant to represent a concept in mind — a physical embodiment of suicidal ideation. i will tag #suicide tw / #suicide mention tw, but be warned it will likely be prevalent throughout this blog. of course, within canon he is a human person and will be treated as such, but i find his role in the narrative itself fascinating and wish to pay special attention to it.

BACKSTORY.
ranked #14 in the detective alliance with 123 solved cases under his belt. doleful detective is no doubt a skilled investigator; all of this thanks to his special ability as a danger magnet. ever since he was young he has had a curse of misfortune follow him everywhere he goes, attracting dangerous and life-threatening phenomena. while this ability allows him to stumble across clues to solve his cases, it also puts everyone around him at risk, which has also earned him the reputation of an "angel of death." the old trope of "where a detective goes, a murder must follow" is quite real when it comes to doleful detective. thanks to his heightened senses, he manages to get out of dangerous situations with minimal damage. at least, that's what he claims. the truth is much more harrowing. reo gray (named after cordelia gray) was orphaned at 13 due to an earthquake. he passed from relative to relative, tragedy after tragedy following until he was taken in by the secret police. at the time they were performing experiments in order to create the perfect detective — a response to the detective crisis brought about by the aftermath of the dayless night incident. in the underground facility he was able to survive everything the experimenters threw at him. even trials with 100% death rates were survived by this child. this gained him the moniker of invincible detective. eventually he escaped the facility and went into hiding. he got facial reconstruction surgery and dyed his hair, hoping to never be found. the ability of invincibility he possesses makes it impossible for him to die. no matter what he does something will always get in the way — be it circumstances or a person. due to all he had been through, reo grew to be suicidal, yet all his attempts ended in failure. doomed to suffer through life with no chance for relief, he joined a criminal organization that came to be as a result of the dayless night incident. there he took up the persona of the quartering duke. the quartering duke first made himself known via a live broadcast of one of his soon-to-be-infamous double killings. his persona was quite unlike reo. lively, flippant, and fickle. theatrical, even. over the next six months he had 100 victims to his name. unknown to the public, reo never actually killed anyone personally. rather, he found people like him. suffering souls who were unable to find the will to live anymore. each one of his dual killings was in truth an assisted suicide. he merely took credit in order to hide the truth from the public, allowing people to take their own lives without the guilt or shame. his broadcast shamed society, fueled by a sympathy for those who suffered at it's hand and a hatred for totalitarianism. during this time, he stumbled upon workaholic detective during the case of building no. 6, which involved a series of locked room murders. workaholic saw potential in reo — and reo saw one of the men who tortured him in that lab. seeing an opportunity, he accepted workaholic's offer to join the detective alliance. he quickly flew up the ranks, taking on the alias of doleful detective, and decided to use the opportunity to find evidence of what the former secret police had done to all those children. a detective elimination project.
VERSES.
unknown: unsure/unmade verse. before: anything taking place before the events of the game. be it detective work, stuff as the duke, his childhood, etc. during: for anything taking place on morgue during the events of the game. epilogue: post-game verse, in which doleful is either in prison or on a similar house arrest program to renegade. incompetent detective is trying to help him and rehabilitate him and it's debatable how well it's going. hundred line: doleful is a member of the sdu. though he questions the war they're fighting in, he doesn't want any unnecessary slaughter. he fights with a wiresaw and is adept as predicting enemy movements. despite his physique, he insists on being in the frontline and away from his allies. he works best intuiting the movements of the enemy and calling them out so his allies can handle it more personally. despite risky positioning, he's yet to get killed on the battlefield, only dying when using a last resort. danganronpa: the detective alliance works as as an ally to the future foundation. with crime so rampant during the tragedy and the true perpetrators still not publicly known their investigative skills are needed now more than ever. it was their role to track down any survivors of hope's peak, as well as figure out the players who participated in causing the downfall of humanity. while doleful is part of that effort, he also still works as the quartering duke. his broadcasts have gotten infinitely more popular and the tragedy has allowed for his victim rate to skyrocket to an insurmountable amount, causing him to gain fame (or infamy) as one of the world's greatest serial killers.
