Step 2) scroll through massive walls of text of Ben Reilly/reader fics that are not under a readmore cut and for some fucking reason write Janet (100% fluent English speaker in canon) speaking outside her speech pattern so badly my bilingual ass who also speaks English as a second language enters an intense state of annoyance and disgust

Step 3) leave search tab as I have discovered a whopping number of ZERO post about best girl herself, every post in the search being about the old white guy though (I like him too but HELLO??)

The OOC character debate is not "he would not fucking say that" in a sense of simply meaning it's overall not the character's lexicon and therefore is entirely wrong with no further debate allowed. More so it's not convincing in a way to make me believe that the character under the circumstances would arrive to the conclusions that they have.

If the author can justify it in their story, then it's not OOC. The issue with OOC complaints is that the authors don't even fucking try. They just wing the ever living fuck out of it and then you have 60 year old gruff men using gen alpha slang that they would have never fucking heard in their entire life. Now that shit is plainly cringe! Build a case for it, however, and the opinion changes.

Writing, especially fic, is convincing and building cases, is it not? Good fic specifically is about playing nice with the lore and knowing what you want to say, what you're getting at and the reason why. By the end, if your disregard for canon is so strong, clearly you have no business writing fanfiction and should be redirecting your passion to original works.
