Please DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS technique for trimming your dog’s nails!! This is especially important if you have a dog that is not a fan of having their nails trimmed. Yes, feeding a lickable treat such as xylitol-free peanut butter while you trim nails is a good way to counter-condition the dog’s negative associations with nails trims, HOWEVER there are much safer ways to do this! Putting a dog in an uncomfortable situation and encouraging them to have their teeth near your face is a recipe for a disaster! When watching these videos you can see some of the dogs displaying uncomfortable body language; some of which are warning signs that often precede a growl/snarl/snap/bite. Instead of this peanut butter on your forehead technique, you can try spreading the lickable treat onto a licky mat or similar product, a refrigerator door, an easily wipeable wall, a dishwasher door, an oven door, a bathtub wall, etc. Then you can trim your dog’s nails while keeping their teeth away from your face! You can also work on slow desensitization and cooperative care training (such as the “Bucket Game” or training a scratch board). Found at C 2 Dog Training . . . Check out our chapter on Teespring!
