jasmine was always watching from afar.
not once was he permitted outside these castle walls. not even for the glorious festivals his father would hold for the citizens or for the arrival of new lords and ladies to the country. his whole life was spent waiting, and waiting while suitors would try for his hand in marriage. it was an endless cycle of denying these people who only wanted him for his status.
he was just a pawn in a bigger game.
yet, he remained steadfast. if he were to marry, it would be on his own terms. they would have to be as willing to explore as he, and be able to match his wit. he’d love to enjoy some playful banter with someone other than his precious tiger for once.
if he truly wanted this, he would need to keep dreaming. dreaming of a day where he would finally break free of these chains that kept him down.
then something occurred. as he was longingly gazing outside on his bedroom porch, the sound of a jovial tune resonated through the city. it was loud enough to reach his ears all the way up in his perch so high above town, it shocked him. even more so, he was intrigued by it. how could someone play so loudly while maintaining such a wonderful song? his curiosity had to know, and so he tried his best to observe closer.
he soon took notice of an unfamiliar face in the crowd. it was you. you certainly couldn’t have been from here. your clothing was much too exotic to be, and that melody sounded nothing like he had ever heard before. the style was completely different, and your instrument was crafted into the most interesting design. your features, they were much different from his own as well.
and you were dancing, dancing so merrily along the streets as the poor children ran to join you.
you were new. you weren’t like home. you didn’t bare jewels on your person, not like those suitors who came for him. you were authentic.
he wanted more. never in his life has he wanted to leave his home so desperately.
as the days went by, as more suitors came to ask for his hand — he couldn’t get you off his mind. as he ate dinner with a potential bride, he asked himself why couldn’t it have been you instead. would you have laughed at his sarcastic comment as he had intended? or would you have reacted like this woman had and say that he was a rude prince? he hoped it was the first guess, he would love to hear you laugh. it had to be as beautiful as the music you had played that day.
that curiosity was never satisfied until one day, he simply couldn’t take it anymore. during the night, he had climbed the castle walls and ran away into the night. to disguise himself, he wore a cloak and covered the lower half of his face. the feeling was filled with anxiety, yet he felt so exhilarated. is this what freedom felt like?
then he heard it again, that tune that had been replaying in his mind. following it, he was led to just the person he had been looking for. you were even more breathtaking in person as you played, smiling as couples and children spun around and simply enjoyed your song. he could only stare with pure joy and love in his heart as he stood and watched you.
and you seemed to notice him too.
for a moment, you made eye contact with him. your eyes, they were the most precious color he had ever seen, shining more than any jewel in the palace he lived in. they held so much life in them. then all of a sudden, that minute of euphoria was gone. the royal guard had found him, and escorted him away. he couldn’t help but look back, gaining one last glance at what could have been.
while it was only for a moment, it was one he would always remember.
maybe one day, he would meet you face to face, properly. he would lay a kiss to your hand, and invite you for a dance. leave with the expectations of a prince left behind and the ambition of an explorer instead following him, and you by his side to share all his joys with.
he would just have to keep wishing.
