GIFs are the lingua franca of the Internet, short bursts of video that quickly convey a thought, emotion, or point. They’re frivolous and fun, not at all the type of thing people give much thought to. But Bill Domonkos considers them an art. Hw blends vintage photos, old films, and other found material in strange, almost surreal ways that mix genres and eras.
“I think of them as very short films,” he says. “The GIFs in particular are kind of like stranded moments that hover somewhere between the past and the future. They seem to exist in a specious present.”
