Still, 2014
Humber Bridge, 2014
I personally stay away from speaking in the first person on here, mainly because I feel that artwork should be able to exist separately to the self. However I feel the need to articulate certain elements of my practice which cannot be explained without first considering myself as a thought-factory, a filter through which the world is processed according to my way of understanding it. I try to take two simultaneous approaches to making work; scientifically and poetically. On the one hand it is important to realise the formal and technical aspects of making work. To truly understand photography, one must understand the medium with which photographers work - light. The same process applies to any medium of expression. Conceptually my work tries to cross examine or deconstruct realities (whether simulated or authentic), and again this stems from a need to critically understand the medium I am working with. In this case, the medium is reality, which arguably is the grand medium from which all artists create work. I grew up reading a lot of science fiction novels alongside my fascination for science and the universe. I want to not only understand reality but to share that understanding with the world. The human brain is enthralled and captivated by narrative and metaphor, the romantic nature of our minds lends itself to being emotionally touched by art that sets out to achieve it. That's not to say I purely make metaphorical work to gain an audience, metaphorical art itself is an entire language of symbols and meanings that can be manipulated to weave layers of deep significance within a piece of work, without over explaining itself.
