If one was really committed to being annoying you could say Phantom is about media/fandom-- all of the Carlotta versus Christine conflict is political in the sense of cultivating a fanbase and having powerful benefactors in the industry versus pure artistry determining greatness, and the whole of the Opera House becomes a place where people can invent (literally) things they want to believe in-- angels, ghosts etc. They disappear into this artificial/manufactured space where anything can be true to make a narrative more acceptable than the reality (man in the basement). Again only someone truly annoying could find the time to pull those threads together and get them on the screen in a coherent way but it would be so rich and worthwhile and create a really gripping relevant backdrop to the story-- which is what again? A man driven insane by being a 0/10? What could possibly be more immediate in this extremely stupid age we live in!
