This two simple words may seem nothing, just a group of Nazi officers and an actress sharing a drink in a tavern but this actually led to a blood bath. For those who haven't watched the Inglorious Basterds, this film is about a group of American Jews called Basterds worked to take down the Nazi party and kill Hıtler that took place during(or before?) World War 2 but this is inaccurate(the plot, I mean.)
The photo attached above shows Archie Hicox, a british officer turned spy as a german officer, raising his three fingers to order a drink but why does the Gestapo Officer across from him, Dieter Hellstrom, looks like he just realized his suspicions were right? EXACTLY. That three finger lead to everyone's death in that tavern because you see, there's two different kind of three(as much as I know): the german three where they use thumb, index, and middle finger. And then there's the british three which uses the index, middle, and ring finger and that's what Hicox exactly did infront of the Nazi German Officer to tell Hellstrom that he IS a british spy without telling him exactly. I didn't know the implications of this gestures until I watched the movie that's why I'm so shocked! Because if you weren't careful back in those times, you would get killed instantly. All I can say is that Tarantino is a genius in my opinion for making this scene and also kind of stupid on Hicox's part(he's one of my favourite characters BUT SERIOUSLY?)
