Akira was a mind-blowing movie to my teenaged mind. I could scarcely fathom the story when I first saw it. I collected the translated Manga as it got published by Epic Comics in the U.S. Kaneda was the accessible anti-hero with escapades I never tired of watching. His dissolving friendship with Tetsuo was catastrophic, but resonated at a time of adolescence for me where my entire world felt like it changed overnight.

The lone survivor, the rebel punk, but still the dutiful friend. Life, and the hope of friendship, was worth fighting for. And his motorcycle was an iconic character from an unparalleled film.
