โง BACKSTORY
lady ophelia lenore clare was raised into a family marked by brilliance. the youngest daughter of the clare family, her early years were spent in the great halls of the clare estate, surrounded by art and invention.
even as a girl, ophelia was slightly odd. she spoke to things that weren't there. she would see things that were long gone. she would sit for hours in the garden, whispering to the plants as though they whispered back. most dismissed her eccentricities as childhood imagination, but the older she got, the more the people would talk.
rather than reject the strangeness around her, she embraced it. the garden became her sanctum, and the voices her companions.
โง ABOUT HER
often hears faint whispers, sometimes names, sometimes warnings
cares for lavender, rosemary, white sage, chamomile, foxglove and other plants and herbs. finds peace in the gardens
sensitive to energies. doesnโt speak of her sensitivities to the spiritual side often, but others gossip about them

BEAUTIFUL IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT. it is life itself, pouring over the brim of the earth mother's chalice, expounding on every colour imaginable, rows and rows of unfurling blossoms, gossamer petals refracting light and creating a serene glow. what sort of peace lives in marius' soul is echoed here, and he is grateful for the reminder. the chance to be deliberate, to feel dirt gather in his nailbeds, to inhale the fresh rain deeply embedded in earth's fertile mantle.
โ yes, โ he answers simply, hands busy with clots of weed and root. โ and freedom is the ultimate goal, isn't it? โ it's a rhetorical question, because he cannot imagine another. โ imagine having the purpose of a flower โ there is no question to what it must do with its life, no deliberating whether it should bloom. that irrefutable purpose grants each sprout its freedom, and i am quite envious. โ
leaning back on his heels, he takes in a clarifying breath, looking to the woman at his side. โ i think that's the case with every truth of the world. if only we could set ourselves aside and be mindful enough to recognize what's in front of us. โ
ophelia let out a laugh, a soft one, barely louder than the sounds of the garden, โso says the man whoโs found his calling among the flowers.โ
her fingers drifted over a nearby stem of thyme, careful not to break the leaves. and slowly, as she finished forming the thought running through her head, she turned to face him again. โbut envy is such a human thing, i doubt the flowers feel it. they just grow where they canโฆ when they must.โ
then she paused before speaking again, quieter this time, โi suppose that makes them wiser than most of us.โ
A NOVEL APPROACH. though, it was a rather curious thought. were they all weeds, then, growing & festering upon this world simply because they're allowed to do so in peace? nerissa smiled again to the younger lady, the lips pulled to an honest grin. "now that is what I call a fresh perspective." she softly chuckled, but she was pleased by the other.
that was a company she'd very much like to keep.
"excellent. I don't doubt you for a moment." the lady of pembury responded, eyes alight with mirth. she wasn't certain if there would be other hands arranging the bouquets, but truthfully? she did not quite care about it - her perfect sister can rack her brains about it for all she cares.
"I can't answer you that. perhaps there will be, perhaps there won't. but, I have faith in your skill, which is why I ask. you are coming to the wedding, are you not?"
โand miss the biggest event in netherbridge?โ ophelia gave her a small laugh, the kind that you can't tell if it's meant to be a dry or a warm one, as if nerissa had asked if she was planning to sleep through the most memorable event of her life.
โiโll be there. unless the universe has other plans,โ she added, โbut iโll be there.โ
she would never say it, but part of her really wanted to see it happen. the crowleys always made a scene, and she wanted a front row seat when they did.
her eyes returned to nerissa. โi imagine it will be memorable. you must be as nervous as the bride. aren't you, lady pembury?โ
EXCELLENT. she wouldn't like symmetry, anyway. she did promise to help out with the wedding, but she didn't promise perfection. besides, she knew her niece - she liked those little misplaced things, like actual natural made bouquets. "if you have roses, peonies, violets or some other pink, red & white monstrosities they usually put in them, it should be just fine." nerissa lightly chuckled, approaching the younger lady.
her smile stretched as she accepted the lavender.
"excellent, I do appreciate a natural talent as will claire." the lady of pembury smirked, bringing the lavender to her face to take a deep inhale of the scent. divine. exquisite. "it is, yes. but, I am more than confident you'll do a splendid job. you grow the garden, don't you? there is no more beautiful a flower than the one grown & nurtured with love. & this garden is in exceptional."
her gaze dropped again to the flowers, a soft smile on her lips as she reached for another stem, inspecting it carefully. โthey grow because theyโre stubborn. i just give them a place to be left alone.โ
ophelia adjusted her skirt, smoothing the fabric with careful fingers. โstill, if she wants something a little imperfect, i think i can provide that.โ
she straightened up properly now, as gracefully as she could, and lifted her gaze to find nerissa's. a hint of curriosity in them. โi assume thereโll be other hands arranging this. or is this bouquet meant to be more personal?โ
NETHERBRIDGE has its fair share of haunted estates โ and how couldn't it, with a longstanding, rich history? most hallways in this town project the sensation that someone is following him ( a prickle at the back of his neck ), and quiet alleys feel like they house a thousand pairs of eyes, watching. there are presences to be felt, waves of unexplainable fear to encounter around every bend, but when marius looks around at the clare gardens, all he sees is life. all he feels is peace. โ perhaps the spirits know me here. โ
the professor arranges his offerings in an idle wheelbarrow, then plucks the shears from her loam-dusted hands. โ precisely what i had in mind. โ he smiles as he takes a knee at her side, not at all concerned when he feels the damp earth seeping through the fabric of his trousers. he falls into the task as if it were his own garden, the acts of trimming, rooting, planting rote, written in the hollows of his bones.
โ i miss this, โ he admits, after a spell of quiet. โ i do most of my work in the greenhouse, stood at a bench. this is more.. deliberate. kneeling at the alter of mother earth, dusted in clay, baked in the sun, willing something to bloom. โ strong hands tore a clot of rotten roots from the earth swiftly. โ no, i think sanctum fits. โ
โit truly is beautiful here,โ ophelia murmured, her voice soft, almost admiring, as she watched him kneel beside her, caring for the plants with ages of practice.
โas nice as your greenhouse is, open gardens do feel different,โ she added thoughtfully, her fingers brushing against the delicate petals of a flower nearby. โthereโs a certain freedom in being outside, donโt you think?โ
she looked back at him, her smile delicate and barely there, โbut i suppose every place has its own magic. itโs just a matter of knowing how to see it.โ

AS THE AUNT of one of the love-doves, it was up to nerissa to make sure the flower arrangements delivered to the church were in tip-top shape, or her sister would never forgive her the error. naturally, that only made her desire to forget about the flower arrangements, but she couldn't do that to claire. her niece seemed truly excited about her union with little lord crowley.
& so she found herself in the clare estate, looking to the youngest member of the brood.
as she had suspected, she found ophelia kneeling in the soil, tending to the flowers. "I wouldn't dream of it. it's no wonder your garden blooms the most luxurious - since you tend to it personally." nerissa approached, a soft & friendly smile on her face.
"none of the sort. I came to inquire about a certain... offer, if you're willing to listen to an old thing such as myself." she was hardly old - but, calling herself such proved to be most amusing.
"how skilled are you in arranging flower bouquets?"
"bouquets?" the word slipped from her lips with a soft laugh. she slowly rose from the ground, her movements unhurried, brushing dirt from her palms with the same care she had with the plants.
"i suppose i could tie stems together and hope they resemble something romantic," ophelia paused, lips twitching at the corners, "but i wouldnโt expect symmetry."
she reached down again and clipped a fresh bloomโlavenderโand extended it to nerissa. not as a offering, more like a polite gesture.
"who is it meant for?" she asked lightly, her voice filled with curiosity, "surely not the blushing bride. not for the crowley wedding."
that last sentence tasted bitter, but she didnโt let it show. just a small smile, polite, pretty, and perfectly unreadable.
โ โขโฆเฎโขโฆ โstaring down at her, nathaniel scoffed. he was not one for gardening, let alone much time spent in the dirt. but he was avoiding the wedding festivities like the p l a g u e. the idea of parading around, celebrating the union of two families that he had a general disdain for, wasn't his cup of tea. however, nathaniel had a disdain for most people. he'd simply shuffled himself of toward one of the other houses for a breather, not having expected to find anyone else lurking around.
"i haven't the slightest interest in gardening. although i do wonder what is so fascinating about sitting in the dirt," nathaniel pondered, glancing over at what exactly she was doing.
the lord watched her, looking her up and down, taking in every inch of her. she was rather innocent looking, and most definitely young, and he did wonder what she was doing hiding out here. "i was looking for peace and quiet, and you're just here. the wedding planning is giving me a headache. the hustle and bustle of everyone excitedly discussing it is nauseating."
โif you're so disinterested in dirt and gardening, i wonder what brought you into a garden in the first place,โ she said, voice cold but composed. โand it isnโt about dirt, itโs about growth. healing. plants have great power, if you must know.โ
โare you always this charming when crashing gardens, or is it just the wedding making you difficult?โ
โthis oneโs for protection,โ she added, nodding toward a sprig of mugwort. โyou might consider keeping some. the festivities seem to have rattled you.โ
THE CLARE ESTATE is a favourite of marius' to visit โ its gardens always lush and yielding, tended by the lady ophelia herself. it is softest and most verdant after a spring rain when lingering drops still fall errantly, giving the impression that the foliage is quivering with life. fewer things give marius more joy then life flourishing where it was planted, leaning into its pocket of loam, embracing itself in its own branches. blooming.
this place is alive, and the lady that cares for it is likely its beating heart.
the footman allows him to pass through the garden's gate, recognizing him as a frequent visitor, but marius doesn't walk with urgency; few would deny him access, because he carries the air that where ever he is, he is meant to be. there is a steady, lazy confidence that lives in his approach & the crack of the dead twig under his boot even snaps his own awareness into place, having been diverted by the scenery.
โ i'm sure i could come up with something, โ he admits, scanning the healthy, vibrant garden. โ but i am not a professor today. โ he mirrors the small smile offered, stepping closer. โ i've brought white sage, holy basil, and lavender from my gardens. extra yield i thought might be of use to you. seeds as well. i hope it's enough to forgive my trespassing into your ..sanctum. โ the lord tilts his head to the side. โ need a hand? โ
โsanctum,โ she repeated, tasting the word, โhow generous of you to call it so. most would call itโฆโ her eyes lifted briefly to meet his, a flicker of amusement in them, โhaunted.โ
โyouโre not trespassing, marius,โ she murmured, examining the lavender and basil with familiarity and a fond smile.
โthe garden allows who it wants in here. lucky you.โ her voice was kind, as if the flowers themselves had chosen him to tend for them.
then she paused, as delicate as a breath between the verses of a poem.
โand if youโre offering hands,โ she added, with a smile tugging at her lips, โyou might as well get them dirty,โ she offered him a pair of shears โ slightly dulled by time, like most things in the estate, but still sharp enough to trust.
setting: the clare estate, late afternoon
status: open starter
the garden was never truly quiet.
even in the stillest hour of the evening, you'd hear the rustling leaves, the wind running though the trees and opheliaโs soft hum, playing some old tune no one would recognize. the smell of the flowers lingered in the the air. she was kneeling in the dirt, sleeves rolled up, gently trimming the flowers. focused entirely on the task at hand.
it wasn't until a twig snapped, sharp and sudden, that her concentration was interrupted. her hand stopped mid-motion and her eyes narrowed as she turned her head, just enough to catch a glimpse of the intruder.
โi do hope,โ she started, her voice cold but not in a rude way, โyou didnโt come here to criticize my gardening skills.โ
after a second, she shifted, turning to face them fully, a small smile starting to form on her face, โthough i suppose there are worse things to interrupt a person over.โ
