Loud music in their ears, bass reverberating under their feet and the flashing strobe lights --- those were already familiar to them, even if the club wasn’t. Tipping the shot of tequila back in one go, there’s some heft as they set the shot glass back down on the counter. Nasty. Sori smiles far too wide when it burns all the way down. Nice. They hum a little – the pleasant buzz of alcohol affecting them more than they would like to admit – as their gaze flits about the room.
Before their mind can catch up, their body moves to the dance floor, squeezing through the crowd of bodies to get near the middle. Although dancing had just been a whim on their part, they’d be damned if they had to stay at the fringes.
They’re not the best at dancing, but it’s easy to see how people lose themselves here. Not much about abilities as it was the feeling and the atmosphere of it all. They quite like it, albeit more than influenced by the copious amount of drinks they had. So, they dance among the gyrating bodies, eyes wandering until they land on the girl opposite them. A closer look at her was all it took for the coquettish grin to blossom across their face, and Sori only closes whatever distance they had between them. “Hello,” they purr into her ear, leaning forward as they continue to move minimally to the beat thumping around them. “Remember me?”
VERA had just delivered an order to the couple sitting outside, but she stopped by the door when she noticed the other person there. “oh hello, please take some.” she gestured to the basket overflowing with different kinds of cookies. “they’re complimentary.” normally, she would try to not be so hasty in offering food to the first person she saw. however, the dream from the other night had rattled her more than she realized and before she knew it, she had ended up with dozens of the sweet treats. “we- uh.. I accidentally made too much, so now we have lots to spare.”
Perhaps Sori was too jaded, unaccustomed to being on the receiving end of kindness, that she didn’t react straight away. It was an unfamiliar, unused muscle. However, her ears pick up the word complimentary and she recognised that term at least. Business. To put into Konglish terms: service. “Thank you,” I’m flattered you thought of me, “but no thanks.” The menu closed with a sharp sound in her hands, head turning to face the staff that gave her the offer of cookies. “Can I order?”

“what a rude bitch, must’ve been spoiled rotten her whole life. i wouldn’t be surprised if this exhibition turned out to be daddy’s gift for his little girl,” a fellow student snickers. you need to remind yourself to remain composed --- a smile can be a loaded gun.
life starts out difficult. hwang sori is born in the frigid winter of 1993 to a divorcee of a mother and two sisters. father is absent, but to them he has always been that way so it really makes no difference at all.
they’re not poor but everything sori owns are hand-me-downs from her sisters. easier to say that they’re... comfortable but it’s just a nicer way to say they’re scraping by even with alimony and the monthly allowance their father sends.
she is adored and doted on but she grows up jealous and she grows up hungry.
an affinity for the arts is nothing if it doesn’t bring back home bread and butter yet she continues with it simply because she enjoys it. in middle school, an art teacher sees themselves in sori, recognising and acknowledging the potential she held.
with some help of connections, she lands into a high school specialising in art. her mother says there’s no future in it so it’s better to kill your dreams, be grateful for the opportunity then hurry up and get your head on straight to focus on something more practical.
she doesn’t listen. (she never listens!)
artists are fickle creatures, so when one asks if she wants to be under their tutelage she grabs the opportunity right away.
the years spent under them are long and hard but whenever she stands in the corner of one of her exhibitions, hidden, observing the crowd as they marvel and examine her work; maybe it was worth it.
but we all stand on the shoulders of giants and sori is quick to realise that in itself isn’t enough for her. she wants to be the giant; breaking away from her mentor’s image, experiment upon experiment upon experiment.
she chooses to settle in kaos, greece and opens her own private studio there.
