It’s mid-October, and Dia de los Muertos is upon us. Scrolling down the dashboard is what seems to be an endless array of culture appropriation posts, offensive and offended micro bloggers, and many (many many!) users dictating an indisputable argument on how the aforementioned are indisputably correct.

I might be committing Tumblr suicide by saying that, in my opinion, many of you are jumping to finite conclusions based on assumptions. Am I wrong?

Perhaps the person showing interest in sugar skulls, face paints, La Catrina, and beautifully colored flowing dresses has an actual interest in the culture itself; and as one who shows interest and genuine affinity towards the culture, should this person be persecuted and judged for wanting to partake and experience this wonderful celebration?

Hell, if you were an outsider to the celebration, would you not be attracted to the rich hues and friendly faces? It’s a day to celebrate and remember the dead. I can’t help but feel that because Dia de los Muertos is Hispanic in origin, we feel it’s alright to create a racial divide from everyone else.

And those genuinely interested “outsiders,” come on in. Enjoy the celebration, and immerse yourself in one of the many fascinating cultures of the world.

Keep an open mind and learn the customs, respect the traditions, and appreciate their beauty.

A rare image in which I'm in front of the camera, taking a breather after a day-long hike, followed by being lost a midst the setting sun for a couple hours. We were already planning on what to do for an overnight in the mountains without legitimate shelter, which was a bit frighting in itself, and not to mention freezing nighttime temperatures.
