I am ashamed that I contributed to this madness

So, while at Disney World a few weekends ago, a question popped into my head. Why is Ursula a half octopus? And let’s not forget that she’s the only one, minus her sister who we meet in the second, and not so popular, Little Mermaid. Let’s ignore the fact that it’s a movie, and having the villain be the only one visually different from the others, for obvious reasons, for a second and look at it from a different perspective. Although you never get to see this in movies, villains don’t just happen they have back stories and childhoods and often reasons for being “evil” in the first place. Now let’s think for a second on what villains are: usually they are simply a character that doesn’t agree with the protagonist’s view or the popular view of the story. With that being said, we can put this into the answer I found for my original question. Why is she a half octopus? Ursula used to be a mermaid like all the others, until one day she found a human just like Ariel does. She fell in love with them, and dreamed of becoming one — again like Ariel. So one day she decided to sneak in and steal King Trident’s trident and attempt to change herself. This only resulted in turning herself into a half octopus. She then fled due to embarrassment and also fear of being reprimanded by Trident. If we assume that the other merpeople knew of her dream to be human, and also her fraternizing with them then when one day she disappeared they would probably be afraid humans finally took her to display or kill. Which would then explain Trident’s fear of Ariel being taken. Now this also explains how she becomes a witch: she’s trying to change herself either back into a mermaid or into a human. She uses the unlucky merpeople that stumble upon her lair as test subjects of her magic, meaning she lies to Ariel about the little brown sea weed people scattered about her cave. Ariel becomes her new test subject, and when it succeeds she attempts to steal it back. And only when that plan fails does she revert to attempting to steal the trident. And this concludes the theory. Let me know what you think. :)

And yeah, if the King and Queen had done the properly respectful thing and invited her, Maleficent would have given Aurora a scary awesome present. Moreover so would the other fairies, because at that point both sides would be using it as an opportunity to show off and one-up each other. What they gave her before Maleficent showed up was basically just trivial party favors by fairy standards.
