The confetti from the surprise baby shower rains down from Mel’s scrubs to the passenger seat of Frank’s car. She refuses his greeting kiss and stares at the Presby sign as he drives out of the parking lot.
At the next traffic light, he carefully asks, “How was your shift?”
“Fine. Whatever.”
“…Okay. What happened? Did someone try and touch your bump again?”
On cue, their baby flips around and kicks her lungs. “Not really. Or just the normal amount. It’s fine.”
Frank huffs but keeps driving – until he steers into an empty spot in front of a small take-away restaurant to their right. Nausea floods through her at the grease in the air.
He shuts the engine off and turns to her. “What’s on your mind, sweetheart? You okay?”
Oh, okay, that tone. As if she was weird about this. She crosses her arms. “You’ve been separated for over three years.”
“Mel…”
No, he started this. “My colleagues all think you’re my husband and that I just never wear my ring to work."
“Sunshine, we talked about this. You know Abby’s conditions for shared custody.”
Mel snorts. “Abby has no idea how recovery works. And a judge always asks the kids what they want. They love you. ...I just really wanted to be married to you before any of this,” she gestures at her heavy stomach, “and I know I forgot the pill, but it’s not fair.”
“I know, baby. I’m sorry. I can’t risk losing my kids.”
She cradles her bump. He sighs. “I’m almost done with my PHP. I’ll stay home, impress Abby, and then my lawyer will get everything started. It’ll look good to the judge. I know it’s hard, Mel, but we’re almost there.”
It’s well-practiced. What he never includes: that he can’t wait to marry her too.
“I’m done talking now,” she replies and avoids his eyes for the entire way home.
He drops her off at their freshly cleaned apartment, then rides off into the sunset at Abby's house. An hour later, her phone lights up with photos from bedtime as she pulls the brand-new maternity pajamas that he bought and washed over her bump. She places her phone face-down on the nightstand, then hides from her guilt under the blankets. Later, she wakes up to the key in the door. Vivid images of Frank fucking Abby in his old home linger in her throat like acid reflux. Her tears stay trapped behind her eyelids. A few minutes later, he slips under the blanket and curls up behind her body. He leaves a kiss on her shoulder and whispers, “I’m sorry, baby. I love you. Your ring is waiting in my suit jacket, if you want to see it.”
Another kiss, another guilty pang in her chest. She slows her breathing and expects him to disappear to better shores overnight. But in the golden morning hours, she wakes up with him wrapped around her like the ring he’ll put on her finger eventually.

The evening of their divorce, Abby—after they’d spent all day together with the kids—had sent him a playlist titled Divorced Dad Rock on Spotify along with the text: your marital status finally caught up to your music taste. He’d laughed then, sent her a couple of emojis, blowing a kiss and a middle finger, and went back to microwaving his pitiful frozen dinner. So no, he shouldn’t, by all accounts, recognize her. However, Penny has played that coffee song non-stop all summer, Tanner joining in the madness eventually.
By early-July, Frank gave up trying to get his kids to listen to anything else. A mere ten days later, he’d gone down the Mel King rabbit hole, first because a responsible parent should know what media his kids are consuming and then out of sheer interest. To say he felt relieved to find out she wasn’t some hypersexualized 18-year-old is an understatement.
But the Mel King that exists in the media is completely different from the woman lying on this hospital bed. Gone are the sparkly stage costumes, pin-up hair, and make-up, and in their place: leggings, an oversized tee, braided hair, and glasses. The latter short circuits his brain a bit; he always did have a thing for them, the trend broken with Abby’s nearly perfect vision.
He must be a little too hung up on the way her tortoiseshell glasses set off her hazel eyes because Princess elbows him sharply in his side, her smile tight. And great, just what he needs. Within the hour, everyone will know that he fumbled his introduction before he could even properly start.
