Mel doesnât feel good. Her head is fuzzy and her stomach feels flippy and she justâ âYou said to just drink this,â Mel says, but it comes out more slurred than sheâd like it to. Santos also looks like she might be feeling fuzzy and flippy, so maybe thereâs a gas leak? That wouldnât be good. âBut I think maybe itâs bad. Like the soda went bad.â Can soda go bad? Probably, right? The only thing that doesnât go bad is honey. Melâs name means honeybee, but nobodyâs called her that since her dad died andâ âItâs not soda, Mel,â Santos says, which doesnât make sense because what Mel drank definitely didnât taste like water. âIt was a fuzzy navel. Booze. Hooch. Alcohol.â Frowning, Mel shakes her head. âI donât drink. I told you that. You wouldnât trick me into drinkingââ âI wasnât tricking you, god, you make me sound like an asshole.â Santos stands up, wobbles, and sticks a finger in Melâs face. âI just saw that you needed to have fun, so I helped you do that.â Mel sits with that for a second, then nods. âYouâre a mean person, Trinity.â She leaves Santos standing still and shocked in the bar. Outside, thereâs a different dilemma. Mel canât drive her car home, and she canât afford an uber, but she doesnât feel great about walking home alone on the Fourth of Julyâ âMel? You good?â Just across the street, Dr. Langdon is walking a dog and smoking a cigarette, dressed in new clothes and still dripping slightly from his hair. Like a saviour, Melâs saviour. âHey, woah, donât cry!â Sniffing, Mel walks over to his side of the street, glad that there isnât much traffic yet. âWill you walk me home? Iâm drunk.â Langdon opens and closes his mouth twice before softening. âYeah, of course. Come on, letâs get you home.â
