A Deadly Blade
Chapter 3: Excalibur
"A Ghost Hunter?"
The admissions director nodded. "His Partner Pokemon is a Dark type, that means he's chosen to be a Ghost Hunter." They slid the dark clothing Father had shoved away back across the desk. I hadn't known that your specific Trainer type was decided by your Partner Pokemon, but I certainly found it ironic that I was becoming a Ghost Hunter considering there was currently a Ghost type Pokemon in several layers of containment in the dorm they had shown me to when I arrived. Father did not appreciate the amused snort that escaped from me, probably assuming I thought it funny that the thing he thought would save me from sin was actually just going to drive me deeper into it. I straightened immediately, my eyes tracing the room for something to focus on. I decided on the name plate for this admissions director. Arnold Bailsworth. Bleh. Father turned back to him.
"Then give him another chance. Let him catch a different Partner Pokemon. My son is an idiot, so he certainly didn't know-" Father's protesting words spilled out of his mouth like the Wooloo spilled out of their shed when you opened the door, but were cut off by Arnold's raised hand.
"There are no second chances. You are given one apricorn for free, and that apricorn is used to catch your Partner Pokemon which decides what Trainer Class you are. It could be worse, you could be another basic Arceian Trainer with Normal type Pokemon." Arnold didn't even look up as they kept scribbling with their quill on the entrance paperwork. "Besides, Ghost Hunters are always in high demand. It takes a firm hand and a powerful soul to train Dark type Pokemon. Powerful Trainers, but easily corrupted." They nodded as though they'd seen that corruption first hand a million times. They stacked the paper on top of a red journal and slid both across to me. "Sign that and the Journey Journal is yours."
A Deadly Blade
Chapter 2: A Death Wish Like You
They told us they didn't find anything out in our pasture. I had thought that was the end of it, but I was so very mistaken. The team they had sent to check our pasture was full of Trainers too young to be priests or priestesses. They were all about my age, actually. Of course, I wouldn't have known this had they not been invited inside by Father to have lunch with us as thanks for protecting our farm. The girl who sat across from Father wore the gaudiest outfit I had ever seen in a Trainer: pink bows adorned her wherever they would fit, including tying up her massive white ponytail and around her waist, making her look like some kind of doll after a child had gotten into her mother's accessory box.
A Fairy type Trainer, for sure.
There were two boys behind her. One of them looked completely ordinary, while the other was the farthest thing from ordinary I had ever seen. Where one boy's hair was a scruffy brown, the other's was a spikey red. Where one boy's clothing was typical brown leathers, the other's was striking red and yellow plate. No matter how different these two boys looked, they both seemed to defer to the girl, and allowed her to speak for their group while they instead loitered, one in a chair eating as he had been invited to, the other by the door like some kind of guard, or perhaps more like an impatient child ready to leave to play with their friends.

Chapter 1: A Pokemon Journey Begins
The sky was unusually cloudy that day. The rolling green fields that I usually stood in to let my family's Wooloo graze rolled even more so as the wind blew through the grass, tickling my ankles as I leaned on the tree at the top of the hill. My brother used to stand up there too. Sent out with the Wooloo by our father, made to watch them graze for hours before rounding them up with his Houndour Blitzkrieg. Father always hated Blitzkrieg. He had said he brought bad luck to our home. Oscar didn't bother arguing with him. There was no point in arguing with Father, since he was always stuck in his ways, and his ways were always the Arceian way. If the Church said to slaughter your youngest child and throw them in to a pit of burning coals, Father would throw Riley in that pit faster than you could say 'filicide'. Mother wasn't any help. Priests said she was touched by Darkrai, and she couldn't speak, move, or do anything for herself. Oscar tried to convince Father that Mother would be better off in a place where they could properly care for her, and Father hold him they don't care for people like Mother, they just kill them. I didn't want Mother to die, so I helped Father take care of her.
She still died.
TYOV: Burn Bright, Birdie
Entry 21: Prompt 24.2 / Prompt 26
As Two and I emerge after the war, I find that woman at our doorstep. Sweetsmile. She crawls, bleeding, angry, spitting venomous words as she drags useless legs behind her. We bring her in, despite her threats of violence towards me at the end of her life, and I perform my healing on her. Cybernetic legs are attached to her, but before I realize it my arms are attaching a chrome jaw to her as well. I did not mean for this to happen, but she leaves the strip club in a fury, drooling blue and proclaiming once again that she will be my death. I believe I may have given her more time to make that truth. A lot more time.

Entry 20: Prompt 27
Something exploded, far off outside the city. The city rumbles and laser lights dance across the walls of the strip club that Two and I huddle inside of. People run outside screaming, and I saw a man grab the handle of the door and try to open it, try to duck inside to hide, but his face in the glass turned into a black splatter before it became a smear down towards the ground. There was shouting by some men, as though it was a victory. They cheered like the Vulpa howl after a good hunt. Two sits in front of me, he is very protective, and I cower. After all this time, hunting with the Vulpa, surviving in the desert, exploring The Brights, I cower in the face of the savagery of men. They call me a monster, call me "Chromejaw" and tell stories like I'm some kind of creature in the jungle to be feared, but they're the ones to be feared. They're the ones who kill pointlessly.
Two and I wait for the pointless killing to end.

Entry 19: Prompt 24
I suppose I will need a new name, since I was told my old name is not fitting for this place. I have heard a few names, but there is no real pattern. Wire-K, Erin, and Sweetsmile. My recent encounters with them and that transport droid have made me realize there are things in the far past I do not remember, so I should name myself something I want to remember. My time in this place before was not a perfect time, but my time with my Dad was pretty good. I think I will call myself Bright now, and Two will remain Two because it is easier to call him that than try to change his name.

Entry 18: Prompt 18.2
I entered an abandoned strip club where I told Two I would meet him while he made his own way into the city. When I arrived there, I was immediately shot in the chest by a woman who claimed to be of my bloodline, and then she spat a name that made the black fluid spurt from my chest and caused me to writhe in pain.
Inky Lips.
I don't know who that is, but I asked if she was that woman from my dream, and the woman snarled at me for not knowing her any closer than that. Two appeared behind the woman, and she quickly backed off, not expecting the Vulpa as she vowed to return to finish the job and told me to remember the name Sweetsmile. Quite the juxtaposition for someone who is planning to kill me.

Entry 17: Prompt 15.2
A transport droid said I was malfunctioning. Pointed right at me and loudly proclaimed I was a malfunctioning robot or something. No, idiot, YOU'RE malfunctioning, I'm working exactly as intended. Thankfully it was more of a nothing issue since my arms are repaired and I was able to ascend to a different layer of Flicker Heights away from that annoying transport droid.

Entry 16: Prompt 12
The police of The Brights are no longer humans. I made my first endeavor through the sands wearing the helmet and carrying the weapons of the man I had destroyed but I could not cross the city border. I was stopped by a machine who held out a robotic hand and demanded I give it a "citizenship ID". I did not have one of these, and did not like when the machine began to count down, but then a man came up next to me and held out his ID for the machine. I thanked him as we were let into The Brights, and he informed me the city hadn't been called that in several years, now being called Flicker Heights. He also informed me his name was Wire-K, and he said that One was an odd name. He also informed me I didn't look much like a soldier, and that I should probably get a better disguise, and then he handed me the ID he had used and we went our separate ways.

Entry 15: Prompt 17
If my plan is to enter The Brights again, I will need to be able to blend in. These men wearing odd helmets and carrying laser weaponry often patrol the sand, but they keep their distance from my ship. Maybe they can sense Two, or maybe they can sense me. When one of them is alone near my ship, I call out to them and hold out my arm: my father's flight jacket, an Iona pilot's jacket which calls them over for assistance. I grab this man, slaughter him while he screams and drink the blue in his shoulders and calves; enhanced leaping and grabbing so definitely a soldier's build. I stow his gear and allow Two to have the rest. Two wants the red, but I only care about the blue.

Entry 14: Prompt 8.2
I spotted Dr. Yozarkin scavenging in the desert today. He saw me as well and I invited him to come into my ship and repair my arms, which he did happily. He spoke about a war that had come to The Brights over resources like food and land. The poor wanted to expand out, while the rich wanted to expand up, and now neither side was expanding much at all. I did not care. I let him finish his repairs before Two attacked him and slammed him into the ground outside where I drank down his blue before letting Two carry what remained of the machine-man away. Two returned later with a glowing blue ball which he gave to me. Some part of the machine man?

Entry 13: Prompt 2
This heartbreak has caused me to slow. I bring the pack to a crawl when we hunt, I worry Mother Marrow when I refuse to speak. In the dead of night I leave to return to The Brights. Two attempts to follow, and I tell him to stay, but he disobeys and accompanies me anyways.
We trudge our way through the water of the flood season, but as we reach a spot where we can see the city the water fades away. The entire jungle fades away, becoming a massive desert surrounding the towering lantern that makes me jaw ache. So much blue, I could go in and feast there for days.
That thought shakes me and I wipe away the drool. Iona jets hum above us and spotlights flash across the ground but Two and I duck into a nearby building... not a building. We duck inside an Iona jet, sunk nose-first into the sands of the desert and heavily damaged. There is no more blue in this place, and even that thought makes me cringe. I am in control, and must remain in control. I clench my eyes shut and Two lays next to me as a show of comfort.
I work to keep my hunger contained.

Entry 12: Prompt 5.2
A woman came to me in a dream last night. She had dark lipstick that matched the smoking hole in her forehead. We sat together and had a drink, and she laughed. There was kindness in her eyes even though the light had died hundreds of years ago. I reached out to take this woman's hand and found her to only be a wisp. She touched my cheek and sighed with pity, kissing me on the forehead before I awoke. She was beautiful and kind to me in a way I had not seen or felt since... since......
I awoke with an aching heart, and found while bathing that my chest now leaks inky fluid where my heart would be.

Entry 11: Prompt 7.2
I was seen today. Not by anyone of note. A small girl spotted me and Two, froze still to the spot and stared. It has been a long time since I have been gazed upon with fear like that, though the tired face she wore reminded me of... someone, and looked like a face no child should have. She whispered something in her disbelief at even seeing me, something like "Chromejaw", which I would say is true, though I have not thought about the fact that my jaw is metal in quite a while.
After staring at me for several minutes she commented that I have too many eyes, which is a very rude thing to say when you're from The Brights and could very easily see someone with eight different eyes that all do different things. Someone called for her and the girl, Erin, ran off. I checked my reflection when Two and I stopped to rest by a stream and I suppose I do have too many eyes now, though I do not think the swirling purple four eyes of the Vulpa look all that bad on me.

Entry 10: Prompt 7
A Vulpa fell and broke one of their hindlegs during a hunt today. I approached quickly and set the bone without realizing what I was doing. The Vulpa stood and continued with the hunt, only lagging slightly behind the pack. Mother Marrow questioned me after, and I told her the truth: I have no idea how I did that. It did not even feel like my own hands working, they felt more practiced, more precise. Like a doctor's hands who had done it a million times.

Entry 9: Prompt 10
My arms have rusted, but it seems Mother Marrow is able to assist me in maintaining what muscle remains underneath. Two and I remain with her when the jungle fills with water, and we huddle close when the fogs come. Mother Marrow has many stories and continues to show me how to hunt. She tells me there are specific seasons where hunting is more plentiful, and I lose track of how many times we huddle during the fog and how many times I seek shelter from the water and how many times I assist Mother Marrow in the training of her new Vulpa and how often Mother Marrow and I sit for long talks in dark parts of the cave where I tell her that her children run full of blue and she tells me that she is well aware and I tell her that she is full of blue and she tells me she is well aware and I tell her that when Dr. Yozarkin changed me in The Brights it made me seek out the blue to replace my drool and she informed me the drooling had ceased and I realized she was right.
The drooling has ceased.
