In despair!!!
Its been a while since ive been on here.. But life doesn't get better.. My brother passed away 3 weeks ago, and whilst i was away for his funeral my neighbour (who kindly said she would clean and feed my beautiful Discus) hasnt and ive returned to all but one dead.. The one thing to keep my mind going and now thats gone. No money (after helping with funeral costs) to buy mire babies.. This sucks!

New tank mates for nova arrived last night. Three white butterflys and one huge eruption leopard. They’re amazing!

Terrible picture, but this is my red turq, Buzz. First one when I got him a few months back, and the second was taken a few nights ago :)!
He is getting big and coloring up well, he’s pretty much the same size as Teeny yet he doesn’t have all his color yet so I think Teeny has reached his full size the wee soul!
He is really colouring up well. I know my 3 Turqs are colouring the same.. Do you find the quality of food helps?
Yeah, for sure. What do you feed your guys? I get my beefheart mix from my discus supplier :)
My guys start the day off with some live brine shrimp, mid-day they have tetra prima, around 5pm they have beef heart (i make myself) and then an hour before lights out i give them some frozen blood worm… They eat better than i do haha
I would up the feedings of beefheart, and cut way down on the bloodworms, they can carry nasties and have no nutritional value to discus! I would only use BW as a once in a blue moon treat or if you have a fish not eating, it can sometimes entice them into wanting food. Live brine shrimp is okay, but again I’d be more inclined to give as a treat. The more beef heart the better :)

I’d give them at least four feedings of beefheart daily, and at some point throw in two mussels or some brine shrimp, switch it up every so often, but with the mussels, don’t give them those too often, as again, they can get hooked and refuse the beefheart. Asda sell mussels in the frozen isle, they should be pre cooked so all you have to do is throw them in, they might take a while to get used to them but once they do they will go bonkers. You’ll just need to scoop out the bits they don’t eat once they are done :)

Aw, mine are being a little fussy lately as they have had too many mussels but most hand feed, they all take it in turns lol!
I have 5 of them around my fingers eating away, i need to train them to be more civil lol

What do aquarium owners do in case on a blackout for fish that need heaters?
That’s a good question! if the tank is small and the blackout temporary, you can wrap the tank with towels to insulate it for a bit. However the only other thing I know of to do would be to use a gas powered generator.
Having been through Hurricane Sandy and ten days without power - here is my pro-tip if you like your pets : consider a genny.
We had NEVER had power loss outside of a few hours in my area. Losing power for ten days was crippling. All of my corals and saltwater livestock was dead by day three even with insulating the tank.. The very last things to go were my large, gorgeous albino bristlenose plecos on day seven. I still haven’t had the heart to go back to saltwater just yet (*although I keep kicking around the idea of a pico reef).
Insulating your tank is good for a short power loss. Styrofoam boards and thick blankets work well, but there is a limit. Larger tanks are more temperature stable and will hold temp for longer, but, again, there is a limit.
Seriously. If you keep delicate, expensive, or threatened stock, get a genny.
Whatever you decide to do, DO NOT perform water changes with warmer water (this will create huge swings in temp that many animals will handle well).

Does anyone know how to sex a discus?
What size are your guys? Sometimes you can sex them around the 5” or so mark, others you will have better luck telling if they pair up/spawn! :)

I was just concerned with the other fishing eating the eggs (if they lay eggs at all) but i do want them to grow, would love to see them reach their full potential as i am doing 50% changes each day and feeding 4 times a day :)

I had my pigeon and cobalt shaking and dancing at each other a few times, but nothing has came of it so far. They are both around the 5” mark, the cobalt slightly bigger, I was excited but I want them to grow as big as possible lol!
