as you lie there is such a crazy album opener it really knocked all of my preconceived notions about what a "paul album" was going to be like and set the darker, heavier sound that would crop up across many tracks in the boys of dungeon lane. there are so many standout moments of production and performance coming together. it starts as spoken word!!! the drums elbowing their way to the front as we're dropped into a different world from the one we just were. absolutely ripfire electric guitar line leading us into a roaring chorus before we get a break with pattering, wandering notes. and then the glissando poking its head through the. the backup vocals echoing the last chorus before the cut off scream that hard transitions into the acoustic guitar (the takes have a bit of string buzz in there also rly made it for meee) stripped down ending (which then develops into double tracked vocals with a bit of wobble so they're not perfectly synced) fading into piano like he did not have to make it fuck SO DAMN HARD

i must say that paul in the hands of a good producer is the last 20% that tips the album over into being a fave for me because the tracks that are stinkers will not bother me as much
