"You don’t have to explain yourself to me," he says, the words for his benefit as much as Simon’s. This isn’t any of Kieren’s business — Simon doesn’t owe him anything, not even an explanation, and Kieren doesn’t know why he’s getting one. It only makes the tightness in his chest knot itself up further.

His instinct is still to flee. Standing there awkwardly, angry and upset, doesn’t serve much of a purpose. When Kieren walks he at least feels like he’s going somewhere. He doesn’t move, just squares his shoulders and shrugs.

He doesn't know where to go from here. He feels, for some reason, like he's about to lose Kieren again. He doesn't know how he can feel that way, like he's about to lose something he doesn't even have anymore. So, desperately, he says: "What if you don't do that?"

Simon's silent for a minute, letting the proposition hang in the air between them before he clears his throat and says, "Don't... go. Come back to the party with me." He bites his tongue before he can stumble more, before he can say or we can not do that we can go somewhere else. He knows -- he knows at a certain point he isn't doing himself any favours with his blustering.

"We can just listen to music. Talk." Simon hesitates, mouth twisting and he looks at his feet, gathering up his words. "Y'know, just as friends. We live in the same place," for now. Simon doesn't know how much longer he can take it here, without Amy, without Kieren. He's thought about going back to the commune. Then he remembers that he betrayed everyone there already. "We're going to see each other so..."

-- which is why he follows him instead of letting him walk off, even though some part of Simon says that he should let Kieren go. Whether his brain's saying that just so Kieren can cool off on his own terms or because they're not together anymore, Simon doesn't know, but he knows he feels like he's done something a lot like betrayal even though it technically isn't.
