Wysandra snuggled the child and found her hands petting her hair without hesitation. âIâm Wysandra.â She brushed a glance of her magics over the child. So the older girls were right: something was a little out of place. Her eyebrows arched slightly in puzzlement, but she glanced up at Tesni and gave her a calm, soothing look. She could vaguely feel the recoiling danger in Neva and the pain in Tesni, and she reached a hand over to a plate of cookies on her desk. âDo you girls want cookies?âÂ
But she continued to think past her bubbly emotions from being in the range of what was essentially unicorn-nip, and turned her eyes to her bookshelf. âYour friend is under a very odd magic. Iâve not seen its like before, to tell you the truth, and I can tell you that my magic is unable to lift it. Neva, be a dear and give me that book on the third row. The leatherbound with gold inlay. Itâs very old, so do be careful.âÂ
She resumed entertaining the child, Dis, with a darling smile and a cookie in her hand. âOh, so youâre descended from merfolk? How pleasant. But I enjoy the realm of humans too much to ever leave it. That way I can see darling little ones like you and spoil you rotten. Do you want a cookie?â Her eyelashes batted in a practically mothering way.Â
Neva clicked her tongue and walked over to the large bookshelf Wysandra had intended her to peruse. Her cold eyes glanced down the shelves, reading titles modern and ancient, some in languages she didn't understand--actually most of the languages she didn't understand. The gold-laced book she was to collect was a massive tome. It smelled extremely musty, vaguely of gunpowder and minerals and mold. She could not read the title, although she thought it should've been in English. It was a very odd English.Â
She dropped the book on Wysandra's desk and went back to her spot on the wall, where she leaned with a predatory patience for whatever magic was to come--if the professor could stop making googly eyes at Dis and get her work done. Neva offered a softly consoling growl from her chest to Tesni, though. She sounded choked up.
