Hannah Montana is fucked up because its entire POINT as a show is that children should be protected from fame and exploitation, but it stars a REAL little girl that's being exploited. Nearly every episode carries the looming threat of Miley being outed as Hannah and losing her peaceful teenage life to the ravages of fame. Her father in the show (played by her own father in real life) wisely protected her from the trauma of fame by making her wear a disguise and live a rather quiet, interview-free life. Meanwhile the REAL Billy Ray Cyrus sold his daughter to Disney Channel when she was 11 and forced her to read dialogue about how terrible it would be to face the public eye. Like... Jesus, dude. The fictional Robby Ray is 10x the father, and it's not even close. (It's also IMMENSELY funny that her dad doesn't use his real name in the show, while she does. Almost like he wanted a bit of a disconnect between his identity and his character. Something Miley didn't get.)

it's interesting to see people so vehemently insist against sasha's russianness as if admitting to it will detract from his also being finnish. it's interesting to see finland, a country with so much of its history and national identity built on preparing for/resisting russian invasion, now construct a national mythology around an athlete who is russo-finnish and attempt to deal with the accompanying unease. like the model for finnish leadership being vilho koskela, a (fictional) lieutenant serving in the continuation war against the ussr, and this is the guy sasha is being compared to with a conspicuous disinclination on the part of the comparison makers to acknowledge any irony or disjunction.
it makes me wonder whether the response to sasha would be different if he didn't behave the way he does, wrt online discussions about his humility and conscientiousness and reserve, which are all true qualities he has that also happen to contrast conveniently against the western stereotype of the russian hockey player as being flashier and more prone to selfishness and laziness. specifically thinking about the common refrain that he's so modest, he never celebrates his goals, prefers to credit the teammate who set him up, etc., i always read a thread of relief, even if unconscious, in those comments as if they are pleased to be able to reaffirm his finnishness against the unspoken threat of his russian background. on the other hand as far as i can tell it's not something that comes up in discussion about ethnically finnish (or ethnically swedish in lundy's case) players. like idk lundy and rantanen and aho celebrate goals all the time and people don't accuse them of besmirching the respectability of finnish hockey or whatever. vs last year during i believe the conference finals when sasha celebrated his goals there were jokes (referring to the jatkoaika forum threads) feigning shock and outrage abt his shamelessness and one comment that really stuck out to me about how when sasha scored they were waiting to see if his arms went over his shoulders or if it was "a familiar and safe sasha." and like omgggg it's just a joke omg it's not that deep okay i get it!!!!!!!!! tbh i will probably continue to think the comments r funny and cute too but like there is truth to the fact that sasha would be much more difficult to reconcile within the finnish cultural consciousness if he did not happen to embody exactly the qualities of finnish hockey itself that make him quote unquote safe.
basically this is a sasha glaze post bc how crazy that he perfectly represents the finnish hockey ideal both in playstyle and personality in such a way as to make this almosttttt not a conversation at all. but also i wanted to raise the question of his being held to a higher standard of assimilation than his ethnically finnish peers & also just say generally i don't think it does anyone any good to pretend he's not russian lol. anyway..
definitely something that complicates the role of WAGs is that the entire elite sports apparatus really does function on the unpaid labor of women⊠including but not limited to WAGs. at the youth level itâs the mother but at the elite level these men really rely on their female partners to do so much for them that allows their elite athletic lives to function. steven ortiz talks about this a lot in The Sports Marriage: that athletes choose wives that become their second mothers to do all of the things that mommy always took care of for them when they were boys. excerpts:
all this considered it makes sense why wags might consider themselves âwomen in motorsportâ.
LET ME BE CLEAR I AM NOT SAYING THEY ARE.
but the way that this patriarchal sport functions and determines who is successful actually calls for the existence of wags, who see themselves as extensions of their partnerâs career because being the partner of someone with that particular career is not just their entire identity, itâs also really the only way they spend their time. their partnerâs career success relies on their existenceâat least, thatâs what they tell themselves.
i get normie straight girl riverdale memes as suggested posts on instagram a lot bc i follow some of the cast and iâm gonna be honest sometimes theyâre funny as fuck

What a mess
A completely predictable mess.

Homosexuality was decriminalized in 1962 in Czechoslovakia. Likewise, hormonal and other treatment has a long history here (might pull some sources later and summarize but Iâm tired now)
Definitely connected to the scientific tradition established by institut fur sexualwissenschaft - some doctors from ifs even worked in Czechoslovakia around the war and post.
I think itâs good to look to local histories but I also would caution anyone from avoiding criticizing them or painting them in rosy colors.
I donât have all criticism on hand, but I at least want to mention how being studied and of scientific interest to doctors is very fraught and complicated as a trans person. Yes, the research lead to HRT and other beneficial treatments, but bioessentialist approaches to sexuality and gender (inextricably tied to the state of modern medicine) have had deeply violent repercussion for lgbt people.
As a concrete example - the research attempting to understand sexual orientation biologically lead to the creation of penile pletyshmography - wherein a device is attached to the penis and the person is shown various pornography. The device measures the blood flow in the organ - ie how strongly the person âreactsâ to sight of say, gay sex or naked women. I donât want to go into details of how fucking offensive this logic is, I think thatâs probably apparent to most. Whatâs relevant is that this method is used to âdiagnoseâ (traumatize) some trans people in Czech Republic to this day.
Anyway, Iâm not disagreeing with the post, I promise, I just want to say that histories are complicated.
Hey thank you for your examples and just to make it clear, it very obviously is complicated. Thereâs no society that doesnât have an incredibly complex situation with regards to sex and gender and where sex and gender âstandardsâ arenât being upheld by systems of oppression, even though the individual systems can differ. (This also means there will never be a society that doesnât have a history of that.) Science exists as a result of that society, so do individual scientists, or even just individuals as such. Itâs all incredibly complicated.
And itâs not even something that you can fully separate from the affected communities, a lot of these scientists, both the historical ones mentioned in my post as well as contemporary academics were/are members of the LGBT community themselves. On top of that come other prejudiced influences, for example sexology, as well as any study of human reproduction have serious problems with eugenics. (Magnus Hirschfeld for example was gay, socialist and Jewish - and member of the German âSociety for Racial Hygieneâ).
But the background of my original point wasnât to act like one history is âbetterâ than the other or to erase any suffering caused by these histories. Itâs more that Iâm noticing a trend in non-US LGBT spaces to completely overfocus on the US, at the expense of local histories. There absolutely were societies (and East Germany was one of them) that had more progressive legal situations for LGBT people at the time of Stonewall, but I only pointed that out because Stonewall is being held up as THE event that lead to LGBT acceptance and recognition, not because the other countries at the time were perfect. But the US and the West arenât the global standard against which LGBT activism and lives should be measured, if that makes sense?Â
And specifically for Germany, that idea is completely ingrained in the LGBT community tbh. The overfocus on US history is part of it, so is the erasure of East Germany and East German LGBT history (despite it literally being the driving force behind a lot of progress that benefits all LGBT people in Germany) - usually when people in the LGBT scene in Germany talk about German history, theyâre talking about West Germany. It also has other side effects, like the fact that a lot of the conversation about LGBT issues in Germany is happening in English or with significant amounts of English terminology - something that is especially alienating for people who never had an English class in their lives, which is a lot of the people who grew up in East Germany.
Or the intersection of homophobia with racism and especially antisemitism - for example, for the Nazis, homosexuality was inherently tied to Jewishness, which targeted these (disproportionately Jewish) people who were early German LGBT advocates. Historically, German homophobia has a strong antisemitic component, the same way the âtraditional idealâ sex and gender roles are influenced not only by patriarchal and cissexist, but also ~racial and imperialist/colonialist ideas.
So to make it absolutely clear, we should not only look at our local history bc itâs cool (though it absolutely is and that alone would be a reason to look at it), but also because it IS the origin of our real life communities, including the problems of these communities.
ALSO I ONLY SAW THIS NOW BUT ITS OBVIOUSLY INSTITUT FĂR SEXUALWISSENSCHAFTEN IN THE ORIGINAL POST OMGÂ
