“Where ever you want,” Edith smiled practically glowing with pride when he called her Mrs. Sharpe.

“I remember you saying once that Paris is lovely,” Edith said recalling that night at the depot so long ago, one of the happiest nights of her life. “We could stroll along the Seine.”

                “It was. The City of Love, they call it. Maybe you                  can find more inspiration there.”

The more he thought about it, the more he liked the idea of living in Paris. Or maybe in the French countryside; they could buy a villa and spend their summers there. He would have to put his work on hold, but Paris was becoming a hub of industry and innovation. His harvester might be more accepted there compared to the other cities in Europe.

Beaming brightly, Edith took Thomas’ hand in hers, the entire idea was enchanting.

“Who?” Edith asked frowning, removing her hand from his face she took his hand, having stolen her wedding ring back from Lucille, Edith stroked the crimson jewel with her thumb.

“You’re my husband, you’ll be a fine teacher, I’m sure.”

                “Alan. We both know he would make a finer husband than I.”

“But I don’t want Alan,” Edith said her distress starting to grow. Would he leave her? They were married after all, and Edith had meant every word when she had said her vows.

“Thomas, you are my husband, until death do us part remember?” He had said that he loved her back in Allerdale Hall, had he been lying then, was everything he said a lie?

“ should she/he be making that noise? ”

“ she’s crying again… it’s your turn ”

“ should she/he be screaming this much? ”

“ i think she/he has a fever ”

“ you can’t call the pediatrician every time you have a question! ”

“ be careful with her/him! ”

“ the books didn’t cover this… ”

Edith was never this bold, but there was something about Sir Thomas Sharpe that made her feel emboldened.

Grasping Thomas’ hand, the blonde smiled and began to lead him out of the ballroom deeper into the McMichael’s house.

“Do you trust me?”

                “I do.”

Smiling, Edith led Thomas to an abandoned sitting room, it was much quieter than in the ballroom, better for conversation.

Relaxing against the pillows as Thomas lay beside her, as distant as he had been before that magical night during the storm, just days ago, Edith studied him.

Even with his ruined eye, he was still handsome. Gently, she reached out to touch his cheek. Careful to avoid his still healing wounds, she was hurt by him, but he was her husband, there had been true affection if not love between them.

“You were right about me you know, I don’t know anything about love.”

                “I didn’t want to be.”

He flinched a little at her touch, relaxing a few moments later. The wound he bore wasn’t the only thing he’d sullied. Edith’s love and trust would forever be tainted, and he knew better than to hope that she would easily forgive him. He’d gone with them because he had nowhere else to go, but he planned to release her from their sham of a marriage and make his way on his own. He still had some skills that would prove to be useful in the blossoming industrial age; he wouldn’t be completely helpless.

Scarred, yes, but not fully ruined. 

               “But he shall undoubtedly teach you a far better lesson than I.”

“Who?” Edith asked frowning, removing her hand from his face she took his hand, having stolen her wedding ring back from Lucille, Edith stroked the crimson jewel with her thumb.
