Phantom Machine Syndrome
My first 10+ page "fine arts" manga one one shot is Phantom Machine Syndrome.
Phantom Machine Syndrome is an exploration of the mecha genre that I was introduced to in my childhood by manga and anime such as Magic Knights Rayearth and Gundam. It plays with the idea of the identity of a mecha suit pilot. Does the mecha make the man or the man make the mecha? If a man piloted such a suit for years, through life and death ordeals, would he forget that he is human?
It applies this conundrum to phantom limb syndrome, an actual psychological condition suffered by soldiers who have lost limbs in wars. Phantom limb syndrome occurs when a person experiences the sensation that an amputated or missing limb is still attached to the body and is moving appropriately with other body parts. If a person in a mecha suit loses a mechanical limb, will he also experience phantom limb syndrome?
So without further ado, I present Phantom Machine Syndrome!
(I hope it uploads alright!)
My Manga Philosophy
Being a child of the 90s, I have always loved anime and manga. I was interested in art even before I was introduced to the colorful and appealing characters in Pokemon, Digimon, DBZ, Rurouni Kenshin, and YuYu Hakusho (and other such shows on Cartoon Network's Toonami and Adult Swim). As I grew into my teenage years I naturally expanded my reading of manga to include both artistically and philosophically challenging works, such as the works of Naoki Urasawa, Makoto Yukimura, and Inio Asano. But when I entered high school and later college, I noticed that many artists and non-artists alike looked down on all manga as crudely drawn kiddie-fare. Manga can be beautiful rendered visions of the actual and imagined world that explore very real issues. Thus, I endeavored to raise the status of comics by publishing "fine arts" manga themed one-shots through the Carleton Graphic. I will post some of my first stories from my "manga redemption" effort in preparation for some longer, more manga styled works. Please enjoy.
