The vast majority of abusers would adamantly deny it if you told them their actions are abusive. They'd fire back with a thousand reasons why their behaviour is perfectly normal and justified, why it's your fault you feel hurt, and why you accusing them of being abusive is selfish or insane.

That's a hard nope/scroll past without investigation and I've read plenty of 'Dead Dove' fics with sheer delight. (Almost as many as I've backbuttoned out of, laughing at myself, because yes, yes, they really did that 🤣)

We have to educate the newcomers better.

We have to provide explanations of fandom vocabulary, answer questions with encouragement, and stop misinterpretation and misuse of terms and tags when we can.

Definitions/tags may vary slightly with context, fandom to fandom, but (borrowing medical terminology) a BLACK BOX WARNING LABEL should be a black box with its content explained in such clear detail people know if it might cause an adverse reaction. Whether to locate it or to avoid it, is entirely up to the consumer.

DD: DNE is NOT a "don't like; don't read" warning for people who dislike your pairing/fandom/genre. It doesn't stand alone. If you don't want interactions, turn off commenting.

Dead Dove: Do Not Eat is absolutely a black box around other content warnings which may be disturbing in nature. It's an emphatic line drawn under those warning tags for the audience.

The other day my mother told me she received an email stating that she had until september 28th to make a choice regarding the divorce she had filed in 2020, the last time she had attempted to leave my father. She told me she had finally made the decision to leave him.  She’s tried to do this in the past many times but he’s always manipulated her back to him, and because she’s never had the finances to actually make a plan work.  But she’s finally ready to take the next step and leave him for good. The only problem is that she was diagnosed with cancer in march, she spent a month in the hospital and has been out of work ever since. My father will not let her work, he has dictated all of her treatments and she is no longer in charge of her own care. She can’t even go to the store without his approval. My mother is at her breaking point and I reached mine a long time ago. I’ve spent almost twenty years watching as this man terrorizes my mother, my siblings, and being terrified myself. We’re at a dead end.  At this point the only thing we can think to do is to reach out to and ask for financial support.  My mother, my three younger siblings, and I are all trapped here with my father until we can gather the funds to safely move out of the house.

    Please, if you can give any support or if anyone you know can give support it may be the only thing that saves my mom’s life.
