providence:
writing itself is improbable a city without leaving it first, impossible
as a kid I thought 'species' was short for 'spectacles' until I first heard it spoken aloud. Â that sort of hush
light through the cut glass of strangers’ mouths or a spatial rhythm surfacing
inaudibly, in sand from westminster or fountain. Â it travels like this: as it is made
you become smaller the longer I walk
this is how I stand very still, Â unmember your moving
my custom, invading species of watching the rain
It’s also the law of writing: one can only write in the direction of that which does not let itself be written and which one must try to write. What I can write is already written, it is no longer of interest.

In the dim yard something (plastic bag?) high in a tree looking like a snail reminded me of two large lonely trees just visible atop a mountain in view of my childhood bedroom window. I often indulged in believing they were monsters, that they could see me, and that I should pretend not to see them or else they’d climb down the mountain to eat me.
