figured out why k/taang bothered me as a kid.
Most children's media I watched back then was primarily directed at young boys, and atla was no different. Aang is the main character, and the center of the main romance (although this was very much not the focus of the show), which is mostly shown from his perspective. The writers also talk about it from his POV. Katara is the cute older girl who sees Aang like a little kid she needs to take care of. She loves him "like a babysitter, like a little brother". But there's the wish fulfillment; even though youβre a goofy kid, the pretty older girl likes you back. I had seen that dynamic, that perspective, in kids media over and over and over again. It was always the girl who changed her mind. And as a girl who couldn't relate, it always felt like watching her get worn down. (disclaimer: these were my feelings, I'm aware they don't reflect the writers' intentions)
K/taang, from its inception, right from the mouths of the writers, was always about what Aang wanted, his wish fulfillment. What little boys would want to see.
The difference in zutara is that itβs not a male-centered fantasy. Itβs not that the girl will come around eventually, itβs that the guy has to work and change to be her friend. It's female-centric. Even k/taang fans seem to recognize this, although they view it pejoratively. βYou like Zuko cause heβs hot and you project onto Kataraβ Look, Iβm gay so no I donβt want to date Zuko, but yeah womanhood is central to Katara's arc and so I relate to her more than I do Zuko or Aang. Of course the idea that someone would change to gain your respect is more appealing than being worn down into liking someone you just previously treated like your child. And hey! Romance is wish fulfillment! Iβm sorry, is that supposed to be shameful?
K/taang fans have this constant misunderstanding that zutara is shallow and so are its fans. It's all about the aesthetic appeal of Zuko over Aang. Honestly the way they talk about it sometimes smacks of misogyny. No you canβt find this relationship deep or meaningful, you just think Zuko is hot. You donβt like their dynamic or development, you just project onto Katara because you think Zuko is hot. You dont like zutara over k/taang because theyβre completely different kinds of ships that appeal to different tastes, you just think Zuko is hot and Aang isn't.
Because women canβt possibly think deeply about these things, theyβre shallow and insipid, obviously. Do you hear yourselves?
I like Katara and Zuko together more because k/taang reminds me of every other male fantasy I had to see women be accessories to. Katara may be her own character in the show, with an arc and development and independence, but in her romance with Aang, she's just his girl.
firelord zuko who loves going to the southern water tribe not just bc it makes katara happy but also bc heβs treated like a normal guy and is put to work and only needs to do breathing exercises to remain optimally warm. not only is he meditating as he goes, he can make himself SO useful outside of the politics of it all. kanna doesnβt feel like using the spark rocks for a fire? chop chop blowtorch boy, the fire wonβt start itself. they need hot water? yeah kataraβs boy can heat that up in a few seconds and he can also do the laundry. heβll get to you in a minute heβs making me tea. hakoda is like mom you canβt just demand the firelord does chores and kanna goes well heβs not the firelord here is he. hashtag not my firelord. and donβt pretend you didnβt come in here to take him hunting. zuko is like oh i can tag along if you need me to and kanna goes no you need to do dishes after that tea is done. hakoda slinks back out and is like sorry boys the space heater canβt go, and sokka is like ah fuck. is gran-gran hogging him again. i was hoping he could warm my hands when they get cold. and katara goes well i wish you would all stop stealing my boyfriend but we canβt all get what we want can we sokka.
Zutara? Zukaang? Zukka? More like ZukME. I want that man for MYSELF. Have you SEEN him?! Move bitch get out the way-

I finally finished it...
I think I redid it like 4 times, and I still not satisfied with the end result, but to this point I'm tired,
maybe I'll redo it somewhere in the future, who knows Β―\_(γ)_/Β―
Anyway here you go!
Pros of rereading your own fics: Holy shit this is amazing
Cons of rereading your own fics: How is there always a typo I missed every single time I read this
Or βhow many times can I use the same word in three paragraphs how did I miss that gaaaaaaaahβ

Katara has many regrets in life but giving her boy the Jinshi Haircut is not one of them.
one of the things the atla universe writers can never do properly is write about the entire bender vs non bender situation lol. they consistently have plots where non-benders want recognition and justice because they feel like they're being mistreated by the benders, and the writers always make them out to be the villain. i still think in the original show they dealt with this topic fairly well, but the legend of korra and the movie is where it really just falls flat in the face. both the movie and tlok constantly sideline and neglect their non-bending characters, or just not have any (except the ONE token non-bender!), and then try to act like the in canon non-benders are stupid for saying they're being mistreated. like you are LITERALLY proving their point !!!!!!!! for example, the movie essentially making sokka entirely useless (except giving him a flying bicycle for one hype aura moment which inevitably leads nowhere), and then erasing almost ENTIRETY of it's other non-bending cast, just makes me think, hey maybe the denied have a point actually. i understand that it's a movie and they can't bring in every single side character, but was suki not a part of the main gang by the end of the show? was sokka not a leader, a strategist and eventually a politician? why couldn't we hear sokka's thoughts on the denied? i understand that the denied are violent and have disruptive ways of being seen and heard, but isn't their core principle right? are the non-benders not treated worse?
this isn't even a new point that was first mentioned in tlok. you see it in the original show. except they never spell it out for you. you see it in the way sokka feels about himself, you see it in the way toph initially treats sokka and assumes he's useless because he can't bend. the boiling rock episodes aren't just fun, but they're such good examples of sokka, suki and hakoda, (and mai and ty lee!!!!) who are all non-benders, doing most of the heavy lifting to get them out. sokka with his brain, suki with her fearlessness and dedication to her art, and hakoda with his strength. the atla universe always comes so close to addressing this issue with maturity and dignity and then just backtracks when it realises it can't give it too much time because it isn't as cool as bending. it just makes me angry.
THIS is what I hope more fans pay attention to. Yes, the animation was stunning. Yes, it was great to see a continuation of the ATLA story. Yes, it wad great to get so much lore around Sonim, and Tagah, and energy bending, BUT -
Half of the entire movie, the actual secondary conflict of the overarching story, was poorly written and made no effort to continue the narrative from the original series. Sokka, the one many would argue was THE MOST IMPORTANT NONBENDER of the series, was reduced to nothing more than comic relief when he SHOULD have been in the middle of the Denied conflict. It should have been SOKKA navigating the airship and taking the lead when everything started to fall apart. As he had done SO MANY times before.
We're allowed to be critical of the movie. We SHOULD be critical of the movie. Because we (and the characters) deserve a writing team who cares about the ATLA universe just as much as we do. We don't need shoddy fanservicing.
