Meditating on Life’s Little Gags with @vanderyacht
For more from Cari’s illustrations and GIFs, follow @vanderyacht on Instagram.
Illustrator and animator Cari Vander Yacht (@vanderyacht) seeks life’s “little gags” and turns them into GIFs. A lot of these moments happen on her 20-minute New York City walk from the subway to her studio. “I was walking home yesterday after my first coffee and thought, wouldn’t it be funny if you open a drawer and there’s a smiling face in there?” Cari says. “It’s a lot of ‘why not.’” What started as a hobby has turned into a full-time gig, but Cari is adamant she’s still learning her craft. For example, “simple things like textural elements make a drawing look deeper than a stick figure. Ideally, I want it to evolve. I’m still exploring with illustration,” she says.
200 people in the US exposed for using tax havens in Panama Papers leak
According to McClatchy’s analysis of the treasure trove of millions of leaked documents, there are at least 200 scanned individual American passports in the Mossack Fonseca files, but establishing a final total is difficult. “Some appear to be American retirees purchasing real estate in places like Costa Rica and Panama,” it said. The database also contains about 3,500 shareholders of offshore companies who list US addresses.

Immigrants, Latinos, and Asians constitute large and growing shares of the economy and electorate in Virginia. Immigrants (the foreign-born) account for 1 in 9 Virginians, and 50.3% of them are naturalized U.S. citizens who are eligible to vote. “New Americans” – immigrants and their children of immigrants – accounted for 10.8% of Virginia voters in 2012. Immigrants not only essential to the state’s economy as workers, but also accounts for hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenue and consumer purchasing power. Moreover, Latinos and Asians (both foreign and native-born) wield more than $45.9 billion in consumer purchasing power, and the businesses they own had sales receipts of $19.1 billion and employed 126,000 people at last count. Immigrant, Latino, and Asian workers and entrepreneurs are integral to Virginia’s economy and tax base – they are an electoral force with which every politician must reckon.

The Fine Art of Coffee Portraiture
Here’s more evidence to back up all those studies on boredom inspiring creativity: Meet Mike Breach, barista extraordinaire, who “paints” everything – and everyone – into his lattes. “I’m an esspressionist,” he proudly proclaims. Just last year, Breach was idling away his customer-less hours in the back of a hotel kitchen with only a dormant espresso machine for company. He was “so, so bored.” So he taught himself how to inscribe ornate hearts in coffee foam, with a bamboo skewer as his paintbrush. “People got so excited about it!” says Breach. He took it further; out came the teddy bears (“the girls just love those”), a portrait of that hotel boss (“I didn’t show it to him, but my coworkers and I laughed about it”), and Salvador Dalì, and Edward Scissorhands, and Beyoncé.
We’re at the Smile To-Go, and he’s frothing some milk behind the counter; the shushing of the machine almost drowns out his words. He reflects. “It’s like, if something is lacking, you’ve got to find a way to make it exciting and fun. Right? I mean, I’m so happy that my old job was so boring! Otherwise I wouldn’t be making these! And this is just the beginning. I want to start a movement.” The milk is now pillowy, foamy-soft – perfect for the latte Breach is about to pour. He stares into his empty chestnut-colored canvas, and suddenly looks up. “I’ve been wanting to try Snoop. Let’s do that, yea?"

For inspiration.
George Washington is a statue by French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon from the late 18th century. Based on a life mask and other measurements of George Washington taken by Houdon, it is considered one of the most accurate depictions of the subject. This is the original sculpture located in the rotunda of the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond, Virginia, that has been copied extensively elaewhere. The work was commisioned by VA Assembly in 1784. Why can’t clothes just be recycled?
QZ has launched a new chart microsite thingy! It’s called Atlas and I’m kinda into it. It pulls together all the charts from QZ articles, so you can scroll through the sea of data goodness until you get bored or media dies.
Here are some of my favorite charts and articles I found so far, just by scrolling through:
Facebook’s workforce diversity update shows how far tech has to go
(Spoiler: there are a lot of white men in tech)
Go ahead and take that Greek vacation—just don’t expect it to be cheap
(Spoiler: I still don’t understand anything about the global economy)
The US leads the world in soda-related deaths, but poor countries suffer the most
(Spolier: Mexico consumes far more soda per person than any country in the world and that surprised me)

Words, I think, are such unpredictable creatutes. No gun, no sword, no army or king will ever be more powerful than a sentence. Swords may cut and kill, but words will stab and stay, burying themselves in our bones to become corpses we carry into the future, all the time digging and failing to rip their skeletons from our flesh.
